Alestorm genre — your question to J.delanoy

Your question to J.delanoy may have been lost among all the others. I noticed it only because you added onto a section that I added.

When you add a new topic to a talk page, start a new section with a Subject/headline. The easiest way to do this is ctrl-+, or the new "section tab" at at the top of the page. You should also sign your remarks by adding four tildes (~~~~) at the end. There's more about signing at How to sign your posts.

To answer your question, I think I know why your change to the Alestorm article was marked as vandalism. You changed the genre in the info box. Before your change, the Genre linked to two other Wikipedia articles for established music genres. It's a recurring problem with the Alestorm article, so when anyone makes that change, it's quickly undone.

The All Music Guide explains what's happening. To distinguish themselves from every other band, Alestorm has invented itself as something entirely unique: Pirate Metal. But people who aren't fans have no idea what Pirate Metal is. It's safe to say (quoting from an audio interview with Alestorm at the Hard Rock Hell Festival 2008):

Pirate Metal. Two words and you know exactly who we're talking about, because those two words may as well just say Alestorm.

So the problem is that Pirate Metal isn't a commonly-known genre, but rather something unique to Alestorm. Yes, Alestorm's style is different, but generically, they fit into established Folk Metal/Power Metal/Celtic genres. I hope this helps to explain why your change was rejected.

Vandalism versus good-faith edits

Often, innocent changes are quickly marked as vandalism. For example, your change to the Ale article was undone. The reason wasn't that your change was inappropriate to the article. It was rejected because of where you put the quote in the article. People sometimes overreact when they see a "vandalized" article.

Like any encyclopedia, Wikipedia articles begin with an introduction — a few brief paragraphs that say what the article is about. The guidelines for Wikipedia are in the Wikipedia Style Manual. Check it out and you'll avoid mistaken vandalism comments.

When you add a quote like yours before the instruction, the introduction is damaged in that the article's introduction has been moved down the page. One quote does no real harm, but if many people added similar lines, the introduction would be at the end of the article instead of that top, see?

You might have been able to work your quote into the body of the article with a verifiable source. That's where it belongs.

Hi, I changed the number to 193 because trust me I know, Watch the news for the next few days for the death of a Light Dragoons Soldier.

it was changed orginially from 191 to 192 in light of his death being announced. anyway unfortunatly, 3 more have been killed bring the total number of deaths in Afghanistan to 195.
