Welcome! edit

Hello, JuliaLeary, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with Wiki Education; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Talk page messages edit

Hi! You were tagged in talk page messages here by Mathglot. The topics are about two events:

  • You moved the article to Homesign over home sign - it looks like the majority of sourcing have the term as two words rather than one, so this was moved back. I would not revert this move unless you gain consensus to do so, however if the majority of reliable sources use the two word version rather than the single it's unlikely that you will gain consensus.
  • The other note stated that you'd added a lot of material about a single person - be very careful about doing this, as it puts a lot of weight on a single person. The only time we should focus on a single person is when their specific case is particularly noteworthy. You can do this by showing where other sources have covered David and his homesigns, signifying that the case is widely studied. I did find this source and this one and it looks like the book source you used was a secondary source, as this looks to be the original study/paper.
However it's also worth saying that even if the case is notable you want to avoid the article being too much about David at the expense of the general topic of home signs. By this I mean that it would focus on how David in specific uses home signs rather than on how he's an example of how some use home signs, if that makes sense.

I hope that this helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:38, 28 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, JuliaLeary. You have new messages at Talk:Home sign.

  • Hi JuliaLeary - if you are still active you need to participate in the talk page discussion about your edits - or discuss them here. The article talk page would be best, but the important thing is that once edits have been challenged, that you participate in any discussions. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:33, 29 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I just saw these edits (made April 28th) today and I am looking at resources for formulating a response to them. I plan to post a response on the talk page this week. JuliaLeary (talk) 02:28, 1 May 2020 (UTC)JuliaLearyReply

Good job edit

Hi, Julia,

I don't know if it's coming across, because in a lot of the article Talk page feedback I'm pointing out areas which need improvement, but that's normal, since we're all here to improve the articles and the encyclopedia; and I just wanted you to know that I think you catch on fast and are doing a really great job. I hope when your class is finished, you will stick around as a Wikipedia editor on your own, and edit any article that you feel like. (It's a lot more fun, when it's not an assignment; trust me!  ) If you have some time after the semester is over, I'd love to help you find something here you'd enjoy working on, or collaborate with you. Feel free to ping me anytime, either about classwork, or anything here at Wikipedia. And keep up the good work! @Shalor (Wiki Ed) and Ncaselli: Mathglot (talk) 04:35, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
