Copyediting edit

I am impressed by the copyediting you have done already. I invite you to consider the Guild of Copyeditors. Take a look. You can reply to me right here.--DThomsen8 (talk) 01:07, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you very much, DThomsen8 (fellow Pennsylvanian -- don't live there, but I was born there)! Very happy to be here! I've lived in Wikipedia for so many years now, I don't know why it took me so long to become an official resident. I've had a blast so far, now that I'm "home," even in the short time I've been here, & I've already learned a lot. & thanks for the invite -- I joined the Guild of Copy Editors, right away. I've bookmarked the articles needing copy edit, articles needing copy edit (by date requested), backlog page, & even the navbar page for easy access. Not only have I been reviewing the various How-to pages, but (being a bibliophile & reference addict) I also have 3 good reference books on their way from Amazon for my additional reference collection & study aids. Hopefully, I've done some good so far! I aspire to reaching your level of experience and productivity, and look forward to earning Barnstars of my own! -- JudyCS (talk) 18:20, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
You should register for the July GOCE Drive, and record the copyedited articles you do there starting Sunday evening in the USA. You will surely earn a barnstar in August.--DThomsen8 (talk) 12:59, 29 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the suggestion, DThomsen8! Hope you don't mind a little friendly competition? (Check the Leaderboard...) JudyCS (talk) 01:46, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

GOCE July drive progress chart edit

Hi, Judy, and thanks for helping with the ever-growing number of articles in need of copyediting. I tweaked your and Lfstevens' entries for the 5K+ articles row on the leaderboard—it's the number of 5K-word articles (in multiples of 5,000 words; that's why Lf got two for his 14,000-word article), not the word count. Thanks again and all the best, Miniapolis 13:29, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome, & thank you, Miniapolis! That one tripped me up (& apparently Lfstevens, too) -- thanks for the clarification & efficiency! JudyCS (talk) 01:44, 10 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Requested Articles edit

Hi! I am trying to reinvigorate Wikipedia:WikiProject Requested Articles, which, if I get enough pointers that there is some interest, I will re-design, with a design similar to Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors, involving drives, to decrease the number of articles listed in the various subpages, and blue link blitzes, involving editors removing all created pages. I am planning, with sufficient interest, to make requested articles 'stricter', i.e. you have to provide two reliable sources, and write a short note explaining why the requested article is notable. There would be a reward system, involving adapted barnstars, similar to the Guild of Copy Editors have here and here. If you have any questions about my aim, or want to indicate that you would sign up to the WikiProject, please say so on my talk page. Thanks! Matty.007 16:37, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Requested Articles update edit

Hi, you've told me that you're interested in WikiProject Requested Articles, and I thought you may want an update: today, I created all the subpages of WikiProject RA that didn't exist, but were in my heading template, and I put in a new colour design. I hope you like it, feel free to have a look through the pages. I am asking at the Village Pump on what to do with the current Requested Articles. I hope you like the new design. If you have any questions, just ask! Thanks, Matty.007 14:39, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

A barnstar for you! edit

  The Copyeditor's Barnstar
I know you're still working on it, but this is for Dingo. It would take an awfully brave copyeditor to wrangle with that monster of an article, and I'm glad that you stepped up to the plate. Thank you! öBrambleberry of RiverClan 23:15, 11 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for your kind words & acknowledgment, Brambleberry of RiverClan! As of this writing, I'm not quite halfway through Dingo, but I've enjoyed the work from the beginning! I noticed that you've done some work on it about a month ago, but I started from the beginning in order to get the "fully monty." I've been interested in animals, Australia & "Australiana" since just about forever, & this was a natural selection for me when I saw it was available. This article is very well-written, & has been keeping me quite engrossed. Your kudos made some very nice "icing" to this "cake" -- thank you very much !! Amazing copy editing edit

Hi, JudyCS. I thought I'd have a look at the big one because I was astonished to see how quickly you got through 13,000 words. That would have taken me a week, but your copy edit was very thorough and excellent. Thank you for the way you've been zapping through the requests, too. Just one thing: could you have a quick look at WP:OVERLINK? There's a lot of judgement left open there, and I'm not criticizing, but it's worth knowing the thinking, and the points about linking countries and duplicate links do get raised at FAC. Kind regards, --Stfg (talk) 22:43, 2 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much for the kind compliments and constructive input, Stfg! I've been in my element and have had the pleasure of reading some quality & very interesting work in the process. Thank you for the tips re: WP:Overlink. I've reviewed it & printed myself a handy quick-reference. I have been removing duplicate links in the process, in addition to adding other (hopefully helpful) links, but have been trying not to overdue. Thank you so much for the positive words & guidance! hyphens after standard -ly adverbs edit

It is not helpful to add hyphens after standard -ly adverbs. WP:HYPHEN says "A hyphen is not used after a standard -ly adverb (a newly available home, a wholly owned subsidiary) unless part of a larger compound (a slowly-but-surely strategy)." Happy editing! GOCE drive tags edit

Hi there. Thanks again for making such a massive contribution to the GOCE's monthly drive. I wanted to mention one minor issue I noticed with your tally. You don't need to include things like "July 2012" or "Request" in the individual line items. The "*O" and "*R" tags at the end of the line are enough. I have a little program that uses those end tags to help calculate the word totals. The awards will be coming out soon, by this weekend at the latest, and you'll be getting quite a few from the looks of things. Cheers. —Torchiest talkedits 01:12, 2 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

SpongeBob SquarePants edit

Hi. Thanks for your recent copy edit of SpongeBob SquarePants. I have a couple of questions about your changes.

  • Describing The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie as being "based on the series" seems to me to imply a looser relationship between the two than actually exists. Maybe it's just me, but when I read "based on", I think of movies that are derived from previous works, but establish their own continuities, and are seen as entirely separate interpretations of the material (e.g. The Fugitive (1993), The Flintstones (1994), Transformers (2007)). However, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, like say, The Simpsons Movie or the the Star Trek films, is meant to be a continuation of the series. Was calling it a feature film "of the series" not correct?
  • I'm not sure that it was necessary to change "Nickelodeon" to "Nickelodeon cable network" in the the sentence, "The series' popularity has made it a media franchise, as well as Nickelodeon cable network's highest rated show, and the most distributed property of MTV Networks." Most people reading the article probably know what Nickelodeon is, and those who don't can probably understand in context. Is is alright with you if I remove this? --Jpcase (talk) 22:41, 2 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your input, JPcase! These are valid points. I will revisit the lead section when I return to work on this article, and I'll have the copy edit completed shortly. Could you perhaps refrain from making too many changes behind me until I've had a chance to complete the copy edit, especially since I frequently return to previous sections as I work my way through an article? That way, you'll have the opportunity to review the completed, fully copy edited article in context in its entirety, & we'll be better able to avoid crashing into each other & spinning our wheels? I will make sure & leave a note on your Talk page to let you know when I've finished the copy edit. Thanks again for your input! JudyCS (talk) 03:40, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sure thing. Thanks for your work on this! --Jpcase (talk) 16:24, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi JudyCS, I'm going to hop into the discussion briefly to say that your copyedit work on SpongeBob has been amazing. It's refreshing to see such great attention to quality in a kids' TV article. Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 02:16, 6 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much for your kind words, Cyphoidbomb! While I always give my best to all of the articles I copy edit, it's that much easier when you can enjoy the material that much more—I'm an admitted adult SpongeBob (as well as other cartoons, especially Pixar, Disney, & Hanna-Barbera) fan, myself! And, while everyone should strive to put the best quality work into each & every article, what better articles to especially ensure quality work than those to which kids themselves will be most drawn? Thank you so much for your encouraging words—you made my day (whole weekend)! JudyCS (talk) 02:35, 6 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome, and it's simply awesome seeing edit after edit of <gasp!> COMPETENCE! :) Okay, enough effusiveness, thank you! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 02:54, 6 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for not continuing this discussion earlier. I've had very little time for Wikipedia lately, and still haven't gotten a chance to look through your entire copy edit. Once again though, thanks for taking the time to improve the article.
About the second sentence that I had asked about above - I'm not sure that the original version ("Nickelodeon cable network") or the new version (just "Nickelodeon network") is grammatically correct. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the sentence should read "the network Nickelodeon" (or "the television network Nickelodeon"). Either way though, I'm still not sure that it's necessary to say anything more than just "Nickelodeon". Even if someone unfamiliar with the name can't figure out what it is in context, the matter is pretty clearly explained in the first sentence of the third paragraph - "The pilot episode first aired on Nickelodeon in the United States on May 1, 1999..." --Jpcase (talk) 02:52, 18 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Request for review of good article status on Spanish Civil War edit

Hello Judy, I know that you did a lot of hard work on the Spanish Civil War article. I'm not sure that the article can merit a good article status as it seems to rely mainly one one now out of date book on the Spanish Civil War. The sources are very limited in comparison with teh article written on Spanish wiki. It would be good to have your point of view. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Isthisuseful (talkcontribs) 08:24, 2 February 2014 (UTC) Hello Judy, thanks for posting a comment on the reassessment page. Although the GOCE typically follows the concept of editing articles in the order of when they were placed, why is Saving Mr. Banks (a recent one) already being edited? Kailash29792 (talk) 02:26, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Copyediting Yoko Ono edit

Hi Judy! I thought your username looked familiar: You do stuff with GOCE, as do I: I've probably seen your name up on one of the drives. Thank you for your attention to Yoko Ono's page. While I really liked what you did on the "First solo album and Fly" subsection, I was a little confounded about your changes to "The Plastic Ono Band" and "Association with Fluxus" subsections:

1. How is changing "In addition to Ono and Lennon" from "In addition to the couple" improving a paragraph which already mentions "Ono" twice up to that point (three times if you count the subsection title, four times if you count the caption for the image adjacent to that paragraph)?

2. In the Fluxus subsection, why did you remove the link to the John Cage Wiki article? We state that he's one of Ono's most important influences, and even if we'd already linked him in an earlier section, it's good to link since it's a pretty dense article.

3. Your spelling of inspiration was wrong, and you deleted the sense of "Fly" being influenced by her association with Fluxus.

I've put all of these back, but if you feel I'm in the wrong, let me know and we can work it out here (or my Talk page) rather than edit war on this. thanks--Aichik (talk) 17:44, 13 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject Weather: Map Dot & Template/Infobox Colors edit

Dear project member, This message is being sent out to encourage new ideas and feedback on those proposed in regard to the colors debate for WikiProject Weather. For those who are unaware of what's been happening over the last year, I will give a brief summary. We have been discussing proposed changes to the colors of the dots on tropical cyclone maps and templates and infoboxes across the entire weather project in order to solve issues related to the limited contrast between colors for both normal vision as well as the various types of color blindness (MOS:ACCESS). We had partially implemented a proposal earlier this year, however, it was objected to by a number of people and additional issues were presented that made it evident this wasn't the optimal solution. We tried to come up with other solutions to address the issues related to color contrast, however, none of them gained traction and no consensus was generated.

We need your help and I encourage you to propose your own scale and give feedback on those already listed. Keep in mind that we are NOT making a decision on any individual proposal at this time. We are simply allowing people to make proposals and cultivate them given feedback from other project members. Please visit our project page for additional details. The proposal phase will close no later than December 31st at 23:59 UTC. NoahTalk 04:22, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
