Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Richard Van Duyne edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Richard Van Duyne requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://sites.northwestern.edu/vanduyne/members/professor-richard-van-duyne/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Conflict of interest edit

  Hello, JonDieringer. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. – Athaenara 07:49, 17 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Blocked edit

You have been blocked indefinitely from editing for advertising or promotion. From your contributions, this seems to be your only purpose.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.

Request reason:

I am not trying to promote this specific person as the sole reason for this account. I was generally interested in beginning to write articles and this seemed like a good start, a notable professor (a member of the US National Academy) of whom I proactively disclosed my relationship with, I was a graduate student. I understand the copyright issue and will correct that, but how do I start again? JonDieringer (talk) 14:12, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Accept reason:

With the blocking admin having no objection, I will remove the block. Jon, it is okay for you to use Articles for Creation to write and submit a draft on the professor, but you will have to start fresh as the prior text was a copyright violation. Please review policy on copyright and copyright violations. If you have any questions, feel free to ask at the Teahouse or Help Desk. 331dot (talk) 20:43, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Now that you know you won't be permitted to write about your professor, what subjects do you want to write about instead? 331dot (talk) 14:24, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

What prompted me to start was I looking at the SERS page explaining the technique to a colleague and noted that the Van Duyne page didn't exist; many faculty at NU have pages so I thought a good place to start. As to your question, I was planning to contribute on Model Airplanes, construction techniques, flying styles etc. I am also active in board games and have a couple rare games that I was considering contributing an article about. I understand the problem now, I saw a gap in the knowledge fabric that is wikipedia; topics I am aware of. I guess my interest in writing about model airplanes is promotion, I want the world to know more about them. You say that I am not allowed to write about my former professor whom I studied under over 10 years ago, but in reading the CoI page, it says that it is not forbidden, just discouraged and I fully disclosed my past relationship. I understand now that wikipedia sees my interest in contributing as promotion, and if that is true, then leave the permanent ban in place. JonDieringer (talk) 18:43, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Athaenara I'd appreciate any views you have on this. 331dot (talk) 19:07, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@331dot and JonDieringer: I was going to say maybe a second chance is appropriate here, but I'm wondering about this edit. – Athaenara 20:05, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Athaenara Users can remove most talk page notices(maybe I'm missing something). 331dot (talk) 20:23, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@331dot: Oh, I know it's permitted, I just wondered why. – Athaenara 20:25, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Jon, did you have any particular reason for removing them? 331dot (talk) 20:27, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I saw it as a resolved issue - the page was deleted and I acknowledged I would address it. Can I write about Model Airplanes because I am interested in promoting the hobby through providing information about it? Can I create a page on Richard Van Duyne?
Also, by promoting I mean I am interested in it and I think others might be. I am not advertising. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JonDieringer (talkcontribs) 20:41, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
At any rate, hoping for the best, I've no objection to unblocking this user, keeping in mind that the page I deleted as spam was also tagged for speedy deletion per {{db-G12}} as a copyright violation. – Athaenara 20:30, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
(I'm not encouraging unblocking, just declining to interfere, and I see a potentially productive discussion here between 331dot andJonDieringer.) – Athaenara 20:40, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
