Welcome edit

Hello, Jon186, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the Wikipedia Boot Camp, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! Though we all make mistakes, here is what Wikipedia is not. The Community Portal can also be very useful. (Opes 21:53, 1 February 2006 (UTC))Reply

I would like to know how old your account has to be before you can be an administrator, and how to sign up for an administrator. An answer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, --Applej12 18:38, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, you can get info about becoming an administrator at Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship. It says there that there are no official pre-requisites, but it has links to info about successful and unsuccessful candidates, which can give an idea of what is needed. I'm not an administrator myself, by the way. --Jon186 18:46, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am trying to add information regarding a company that is affiliated with the Neo Soul Music genre. It is called Neo Soul Cafe. Please help. --LincolnCStephens 16:36, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Firstly, if you own or work for the company in question then it is usually best not to write the article yourself but to wait for someone else to write it for you. One option would be to post it in Requested articles to encourage someone to write it.

The key issues you are likely to face with getting your article on wikipedia without being deleted are likely notability and neutral point of view.

If I remember correctly, I think the article you created used a lot of opinionated statements that appeared to promote the business, and that was why I put the tag on it, which led to its deletion by an administrator. I think you may also have written it in the first person ("We...", rather than "They..." or "Neo Soul Cafe...").

Articles must not exist to promote businesses, they must provide factual information on something that is already notable, and should cover both positives and negatives. Statements must be verifiable using reliable sources, and not use weasel words.

You may like to look at the style of existing articles on businesses, such as Tesco.

Hope that helps. --Jon186 20:21, 25 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry. Made a request of you you'd already done... AlanD 22:24, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think the warnings should probably be added one a time, between violations, shouldn't they? I'm very new at this though. S/he seems to have stopped now though anyway :) --Jon186 22:35, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

You may be right but I was adding them after each violation I reverted or spotted. Ooops (but I'm not sure they've stopped as I've noticed a different IP made identical edits to the World War III page. AlanD 22:36, 5 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Broken code edit

Your edit to Wikipedia:Articles for creation/2006-11-23#The American International School of Kuwait didn't quite work out and I don't know enough about that code to fix it. Thought you should know. --Geniac 01:45, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing that out, I'm not sure what happened there, but I've re-entered the templates and that's fixed it. --Jon186 02:05, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, my dear. Now, should I remove the link from the artciles that quote this dead link? Or should I replace them with the link you provided? Please answer to my talk page. Aditya Kabir 17:39, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Smeaton, Victoria edit

Hi Jon186,

Thanks for letting me know about the John Hepburn link. I made the change, saw the link turn blue and assumed a match. It was lazy and I should have known better.

I am still uncomfortable about using Captain John Hepburn as a title name. To disambiguate, I personally would use John Hepburn (squatter) as the title, redirect Captain John Hepburn to that page and add an other uses template to the existing John Hepburn article (or create a disambiguation page containing both and rename the existing article).

Also, based on the information in the Smeaton article, it may be worth considering if John Hepburn is notable enough for an article.--Mattinbgn/ talk 22:38, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Archive edit

OK, but still should I do anything? I do see other people with archived pages on their talk page. What is that for? I just wonder becuase I hope I am not doing anything wrong. 4myself4 20:30, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I realize that you didn't "write" this article, but the author is long gone, the rest of the "contributors" are IPs. Just thought you'd like to know in case you've unwatchlisted this particular article. Cheers, Keeper | 76 16:19, 26 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference edit

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:59, 15 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
