Lima Syndrome

<ref 1>Lima syndrome occurs when hostage takers become sympathetic towards the rights and demands of the hostages<ref 1>. <ref 3>Lima Syndrome is a Psychological condition<ref 3>. <ref 2>In December of 1996, 14 Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement activist took hundreds of people hostage at a party taking place at the official resident of Japan's ambassador<ref 2>. <ref 1>The hostages, which consisted of diplomats and government officials were held captive for months at a time<ref 1>. <ref 4>However, most of the important officials were let go within just a few days<ref 4>. <ref 1> The hostage situation completely ended on April 22, 1997<ref 1>. <ref 5>This stand-off is how Lima Syndrome got its name<ref 5>. <ref 5>It seems to most that the villains began for feel sorry for the victims and let them go without harm; especially the ones of great importance<ref 5>. <ref 4>Usually the villain in charge of tending the victims develops the syndrome<ref 4>. <ref 3>If the kidnappers keep their victims in captivity for a prolonged period of time, they start becoming sympathetic towards their victims<ref 3>. Today there are movies with this same theme, such as the Negotiator, The Chase, and Inside Man.
