Recruitment project

John,

The recruitment project seemed to be a quick hype, but now it is hard to keep the intitial participants. I am wondering wether the Food and drink WikiProject would be a good project to start with, if we are the only ones doing some work for it. If you are willing to put some time in it, than i will focus my effort on this project, otherwise i will try some plans for myself. I am thinking about restarting WikiProject intellectual debate and try to recruit disgruntled experts from the expert retention article. from there, i don't know how things will evolve yet. It depends on whom i am able to recruit and what ideas they will have. But, lets focus on the WikiProject Food and drink first, if you have time for it.--Daanschr 21:13, 1 October 2007 (UTC) Reply

Ebionites

an arbitration case takes months, you need patience there. In the meantime, it's Wikipedia:Dispute resolution as usual. Tag the insufficient references with {{page number}}, and, if unaddressed, remove the disputed passages. If Michael reverts that, he'll likely run into WP:3RR, or the article will be temporarily locked down for edit-warring. It will take time and effort, but these things usually sort themselves out just as long as one party is interested in setting the record straight according to Wikipedia policy. I can put the article on my watchlist if you like, but I'll need some time to get an understanding of the issues involved. dab (��) 17:26, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Help with theological interpretation?

Hi. I found your name on Wikipedia:WikiProject Religion, and you're still active, so I hope you can help me. I am writing an article about the Mythology of Carnivàle, a semi-religious TV show. The first season started with a monologue, "Before the beginning, after the great war between heaven and hell, God created the Earth and gave dominion over it to the crafty ape he called man... and to each generation was born a Creature of Light and a Creature of Darkness... and great armies clashed by night in the ancient war between good and evil [...]". Unfortunately, I am not well-versed when it comes to Christian religion and interpretation, and I don't know if "great war between heaven and hell" and "the ancient war between good and evil" refer to some specific biblical event. I'd like to link those phrase somewhere, but I'd rather not resort to Original Research if someone more knowledgable than me says it's not obvious. Wake Island is a micronation?

The category and banner were added based on the fact that the Kingdom of Enenkio claims it. That "state" is counted as a Micronation, and its claim on Wake Island and that territory takes up a significant portion of that article. Also, for what little it's worth, the Micronations project, which is admittedly small, also doesn't have that many articles do work with, so the chances of its improving the article in an NPOV way are probably better than those of the other projects that work with the article. I myself am not extraordinarily active with the project right now, but on the conclusion of my own current activities I'm going to be working with that project as much as any other whose userboxes I have greedily acquired for myself, and Wake Island is an important article. Feel free to remove the tags, but the Micronations project's interest in the article will almost certainly do the article more good than harm. John Carter 22:40, 2 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I just did some external research on Enenkio and I'm not sure it would fall under the Micronation category. I think of Micronations as fresh ideas trying to claim sovereignty over occupied or owned land. I think Enenkio would be in a different class, one relating to "White man took my lands I want them back now". I'm pretty sure Wake was claimed under the Guano Islands Act, which allowed US citizens to claim islands as long as they were uninhabited and unclaimed. Many of the islands claimed had previously been visited by Micronesians/Polynesians, but were abandoned after resources were exhausted. One resource left that was not of use to the Micronesians: guano. I'm guessing that when Americans landed on Wake it was like other isolated barren Pacific islands, uninhabited. These are just my thoughts and I am sure the people of Enenkio have good reason for their claims. In short I don't think Enenkio is a Micronation but simply one nation protesting another's occupation of the formers land. --Henry W. Schmitt 03:59, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am about to try adding the "lacks historical information" to Template:Articleissues. Maybe this will raise the visibility of the project's concern. Flagging "insufficient context" seems to be to often be a substitute for the more specific "lacks historical information."

Great idea (transcluded sub-pages for historical projects). As you probably know, the template does currently add flagged articles to the category "Articles lacking historical information." I don't know enough wiki markup to do what you're suggesting, but would like to try to make it happen. (On the Articleissues edition, I'm cribbing other template code and testing it out at Template:X1 before making changes live.) OK. I'll call on you if I get stuck. I've taken a suggestion from the talk page and am seeking to reduce the prominence of the template (dropping the puzzle piece icon) and using {{unreferenced}} as a model. This should ensure compatibility with Template:Articleissues. I'm about to test it.

The deed is done. The template is revised and a "histinfo" parameter is added to Template:Articleissues -- although the latter is not date-sensitive. I have replied on my talkpage. I think that dispute resolution is making good progress, and it seems a bit superfluous to embark on an arbitration case at this point. Note that if consensus among editors is that a given paragraph is insufficiently referenced, it may just be removed, even if a single editor disagrees. I think you should see this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Tweety21&diff=156793064&oldid=156754292 was having "sock puppet" temp-plates repeatedly put on account, even after checkuser proved this was false. I also had my contributions deleted off of my talk page by user Precious Roy see the community board for the hyper links. I am not sure why Roy has been doing this for the past month or so, I edited Wikipedia for 2 years and never had problems like this.

In conclusion I think I made many useful contributions to Wikipedia: Bryten Goss, I actually got an email of thanks from his mother who was very happy about his being put in Wikipedia. Shalon Goss, Domino Kirke and edited many others. It has just been so frustrating to be treated so rudely by Roy! WP Academy Awards

Hey John, I noticed that you've been doing a bit of editing on behalf of this project as of late, and I was wondering if this was a larger one-time organizational thing (ie WP Council work) or if you have decided to get active with the project. The reason I ask is that I've been starting to reorganize WP Films considerably in the past few months, and it seems a natural candidate for being brought into WP Films as a task force. I probably should have clarified that we're expanding the scope of the project to all topics pertaining to film. This has also allowed us to integrate WP Filmmaking as a task force, as well as creating one solely for film festivals. While people related to the film industry will fall primarily under the Actors and Filmmakers workgroup of WP Bio, any individual also associated with particular subsets which have a task force, such as several national cinemas, will also be able to be tagged by Films. In essence, we're consolidating our scope along similar principles to WP MilHist, which I've been using as a model project for the purposes of strengthening the organizational structure of WP Films. In this case that was probably a good idea, since there are a lot of editors and the template is just a net to bring them in. I know I'm saying "userfy" a lot but I don't think I would want some of the projects you're finding to do that or we'd have a lot of junk talkpage banners out there. I know you'll be out there editing somewhere, but join us in our growth pains if you get the chance. Actually, it's included where it is because it seems the least "opinionated" of them all, and, frankly, even with all the awards, some of which I personally think may not have been as well earned as others, it helps me at least try to maintain some perspective. I do occasionally have a tendency to think more of my own opinions than is necessarily required, and in the event that there are any other editors out there who are struck by the dissonance of that ribbon placed with the others, it should help indicate to them that I'm not as impressive a person as the other awards might seem to indicate. I still make mistakes, sometimes big ones, and by placing it where I did I'm hoping to indicate to anyone that sees them all that I probably still have a lot to learn. I see. It is indeed easy to create the wrong impression in Wikipedia, especially since barnstars are not exactly handed out by some impartial committee with a long expertise in the field. But your user page philosophy seems even more interesting to me when I contrast it to mine, given that my user page goes for the completely opposite effect (and if I had any awards, I should make them very visible). Visit the page and you will see what I mean. (I am planning a few changes, by the way, that will make it resemble a namespace article even more.)
By the way, welcome to SBS. I should like to tell you that we are glad to have you as a member, and that if you have any question you can ask it in my talk page. Now, one of the things where we need help is the votes. Without members, policy cannot be approved, and there are a lot of holes in the guidelines to plug. Thus, when you have some time, it will be much appreciated if you can comment on a few of them. The main concerns at the moment are the removal of the disambiguatory notices from the s-par headers, the colour scheme for the succession box headers in general, and the creation of a separate template for judiciary offices. Indian states as WikiProjects

Sorry, I apparently was a bit too [WP:BB|bold]]. I still think it's a bad idea to do a "fill in the blanks" approach for potential WikiProjects - one could do this for every country in the world without a WikiProject, every science without a WikiProject, every major university without a WikiProject, every English county without a WikiProject, and so on, just to test out the level of interest, resulting in a page that would be horrendously long.

But I don't think it's worth arguing over, so I'll defer to your revert, even though it looks like the Indian states will clog up the page for four months before being archived. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 14:09, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Coaches and executives

Regarding this edit, where it looks like you removed the "coaches" category as being redundant with the "executives" category, it seems that, at least in the context of major sports, head coaches are not considered "executives", whereas the subject of the article is in fact both a head coach and an executive. heqs ·:. 20:08, 17 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Undeletion of other micronation articles

Hi John. Earlier this year 2 important micronation articles were deleted by a rampant admin despite the fact that there was an even split between delete/keep votes on the AFDs for each of them, and hence no justification for deletion.

I'm referring to Flags of micronations and Coats of arms of micronations. The content for these articles was drawn from the existing list of notable micronation articles within WP.

Do you think we should simply recreate the articles, or is going through the formal undeletion process preferable? --Gene_poole 04:49, 16 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply John. In my opinion the 2 articles should be recreated in their previous form, rather than incorporating them into List of micronations, because the stand-alone pages follow the format and precedent of all other existing flag and coat-of-arms related articles in WP, for which a template exists. Given the historic acrimony associated with their deletion, it would be better if someone other than me recreated them. Do you want to do the deed? I'll happily clean them up afterwards. As far as JRG goes, he agreed to take the content into his personal space to save the it from being lost completely during the deletion campaign - so I'm amost certain he'll support the recreation. --Gene_poole 06:35, 18 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Your WikiProject Biography ideas

I certainly agree that we need more workgroups, possibly some of the ones you listed. What's more important, however, is having workgroups that actually work as a group and get things done. I also think the core biography project has been a failure. It's very difficult to work on articles like those, especially when basically nobody is working on them. I've been focusing on Wikisource lately so I haven't spent much time on Wikipedia lately, but I will bring this up on the main talk page when I can. Psychless 02:06, 18 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Head's up regarding your signature

I have noticed that you sign your posts as "John Carter" which is rather different than your actual username of "Warlordjohncarter". WP:SIG states:

In no circumstance should a signature be used to impersonate another user: in particular, a signature should not be identical to the actual username of another existing user, and even more importantly should not link to someone else's userpage. While not an absolute requirement, it is common practice for a signature to resemble to some degree the username it represents.

Therefore, I would suggest you create the user John Carter and redirect that user to your userpage #REDIRECT [[User:Warlordjohncarter]]. That will prevent someone from "stealing" your identity, or prevent you from being accused of such. Otherwise, you might want to reconsider your signature. Now that you mention it, you might want to sign in/create that account to make sure the username is not taken - just because you could create the redirect does not necessarily mean someone has that account (that was my fault for not mentioning that, I did not foresee that possibility). After I read some more, you might want to scrap the redirect and instead label it as a {{Doppelganger}} account; be sure to make the edit not as "Warlordjohncarter", but as "John Carter". WikiProject CFL

I noticed that you have been adding non-CFL articles to the project, such as Canadian Bowl, Quebec Bantam Football League, etc. While these are Canadian football-related articles, they are outside the scope of the Canadian Football League, and should be outside the scope of the project as well. The sport and the league are two different things, and the subjects of the articles in question may not have any particular affiliation with the league. Until we have a parent project for Canadian football, I don't think we should add these kinds of articles, and if no one objects, I will be removing the tags. heqs ·:. 04:45, 21 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agriculture Project Talk Page Banner

John, thanks for your technical clean up of our categories and addition of the assessment department. Do you know why our Banner is linking NA articles to Category:NA-Class articles rather than Category:Non-article Agriculture pages? I thought I had the code correct, but I must be missing something. Also, I've placed the latter category in the former, but it is alphabetizing under "N", which doesn't make sense, do you know how to fix that? Ha! you're right, I was looking at the banner itself. But only "NA" seems to link to anything, the other assessments are redlinked. In other words, if I assess an article as B-Class and then mouse-over the "B" it should link to B-Class Articles, but it is redlinked. Double-checking, the above example seems to attempt to link to B-Class agriculture articles, other project's banners seem to link to Category:B-Class articles rather than "Category:B-Class Topic articles". Ignore my first questions, they were a mistake of failing to look at the bottom of the page at the cats. But these last two paragraphs, plus this one, I'm specifically referring to the banners themselves. Where the rating shows on the banner should be a link to something. All the other banners seem to link to "Category X-class articles", whereas our banner is redlinked and seems to be trying to link to "X-Class agriculture articles" (in article space). Obviously that makes no sense, but it shouldn't be redlinked in anycase, it should either be linking to "Category X-class articles" like all the other project banners appear to, or at least be fixed to link to "Category:X-class agriculture articles". For some reason NA is correct (or at least it is consistent with other banners. All of the cats at the bottom of the page seem to be fine (now that I'm looking in the right place), but that's an unrelated issue. Take a look at Talk:Oat. Notice that the "Start" on each of the other two project banners is blue and links to Category:Start-Class articles, but our "B" is red.--Doug.(talk contribs) 01:44, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
