Welcome

Hello Johan Elisson/Archive 1 and welcome to Wikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Howdy Sweden!

Another fellow Swede, may I say: Välkommen! (I noticed you've been here a while, but I haven't seen you before.) I see we partially share interests, and hope you will be contributing where we lack information, which is for instance:

This is not to say that I want or demand you specifically to contribute here, it's just a selection of articles that you might want to improve, if you find yourself idle on a rainy day and don't know what to work on. If it'll ever rain again, that is. Cheers, Jao 12:43, Aug 13, 2004 (UTC)

Hej och tack! I've not been active here for very long, but I will probably be in the near future, as my project List of Swedish regiments will take quite a while to finish if I'm going to write separate articles about all regiments. :) But, of course I can contribute in other places too.
Of the listed articles that are stubs or could use a brush-up or more information, the branches of the Swedish Armed Forces, and maybe the officer ranks are the subjects most interresting to me. I'm not much into Sweden's 20th century history, but I might add a little to that one if I've got nothing else to do.
BTW, I had a little dilemma before starting my regiments' articles, writing the names in Swedish or English? I know that you should try to write the English names as often as possible, but as I worked my way through the list of names of regiments, I came to the conclusion that trying to translate medieval, renaissance and modern Swedish military terms was really hard. What do you think?
feldgrau 14:48, 13 Aug 2004 (UTC)
As for the translation, I think when it is easy to translate (Westrobothnia Regiment etc), there's no real reason not to do so. I appreciate that there might be more difficult cases, and that partial translation would result in inconsistent namings. Perhaps you should ask User:Mic about this, he usually has ideas when it comes to namings of Swedish matters. -- Jao 17:44, Aug 13, 2004 (UTC)

Hej

:) feldgrau 18:58, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Johan, you made some relevant comments earlier at Talk:List of German divisions in WWII, so I wanted to call your attention to the new draft Wikipedia:Naming conventions (military units) page, which you may also wish to comment on. — B.Bryant 00:13, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. As I am not only planning to help you on the infinite amount of work with the German divisions, I am at the moment creating articles for all Swedish regiments that has ever existed, and naming conventions are hard to follow, when strange and complicated unit names come up, like Queen Dowager's Life Guard Regiment in Pomerania or Tavastia, Viborg and Nyslott County Third Man Foot Regiment. :) I will try to contribute and help you with the conventions page. --Elisson 14:10, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Football infobox

Hi, I've started to expand the Swedish football articles and would like to suggest an improvement to the infobox. How about adding a place for the logo, which would make things look neater than they do currently when adding a logo to a page? -Elisson 00:21, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Almost all football club logos aren't avaliable under a free license, so many football club pages don't have this image. Many of course do, under fair use, but if we were to implement a place to insert the image, it would have to not disrupt the existing boxes, which is a bit trickier. A generic optional image box might be useful as it could contain a free image representing the club such as a photo of the stadium. ed g2stalk 01:26, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
AFAIK, the problem with logo's not available under free use seems to only affect English clubs as hqfl.dk has logos for almost every other country in the world. And I do believe that the English logos can be acquired in other ways. As you say, for clubs with no logo available, just adding a picture relating to the club will do fine. --Elisson 10:30, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Not quite, all the logos will be copyrighted by each club, regardless of whether they have complained to HQFL about them using them. Most clubs do not release the logo under free use so as to prevent the sale of non-official merchandise. ed g2stalk 12:27, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Of course, I meant fair and not free use. Sorry for that. :) --Elisson 12:32, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Edit, I've created a test template at Template:Football_club_infobox/badge and it seems to work fine even for clubs without any badge available. Just add badge = | and there will be no noticeable difference between this template and the old. For clubs with logo, just add the usual image link and it works fine. See IFK Göteborg for infobox with badge, Gefle IF for infobox without badge. --Elisson 11:12, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Width regards to your mockup, this is exactly the point, you have to add badge = | to every box before you make that edit. So if you want to do this, you'll have to go through every club that uses it (Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Football_club_infobox, 421 at the last count), and add in the badge, or the empty tag. P.S. if you do do it, could you use the more generic "image" as the variable, not "badge". ed g2stalk 12:31, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I can change it, it will take some time, but I'll do it. Should we move the infobox/badge template over to to the regular infobox template? --Elisson 13:12, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Yes, but only once all 421 changes have been made (and don't forget to use "image" not "badge" :)). ed g2stalk 14:57, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Together with the changes made by Carioca, all pages (hopefully, I've gone through the whole list but I might have missed a few pages, although I don't think so) using the template have now been changed, and I've also changed the template itself. Now I'll start going through badges and fixing them. --Elisson 12:19, 1 May 2005 (UTC)
Hi, I updated all the teams listed below with image = |:
Paysandu Sport Club - Guarani Futebol Clube - Galicia Esporte Clube - Coritiba Foot Ball Club - Associação Atlética Ponte Preta - Brasiliense Futebol Clube - Figueirense Futebol Clube - Goiás Esporte Clube - Esporte Clube Juventude - Olimpia Asunción - Esporte Clube Santo André - Criciúma Esporte Clube - Associação Portuguesa de Desportos - Ipatinga Futebol Clube - Sociedade Esportiva do Gama - Sociedade Esportiva e Recreativa Caxias do Sul - Clube de Regatas Brasil - Vila Nova Futebol Clube - Ceará Sporting Club - Avaí Futebol Clube - Paulista Futebol Clube - Marília Atlético Clube - Ituano Sociedade Civil de Futebol Ltda - América Football Club - Americano Futebol Clube - Associação Desportiva Cabofriense - Bangu Atlético Clube - Volta Redonda Futebol Clube - GIF Sundsvall - Associação Atlética Portuguesa (RJ) - Friburguense Atlético Clube - Madureira Esporte Clube - Olaria Atlético Clube - Campo Grande Atlético Clube
I hope that this will help you, Elisson and Ed g2s --Carioca 19:03, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thanks! --Elisson 10:53, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Not completely related to this, but still close enough, I've edited the Template:Hqfl logos so that it should put the image pages which use the template in a separate category (Category:HQFL Logos) and not the usual logos category but it doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? Is there somo special syntax to be included on the category page or is my browser just not updating the page correctly? --Elisson 17:10, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

I think every page has to be purged for it to tell the Category that it is now a member, effectively it's a bug in the software. ed g2stalk 17:19, 3 May 2005 (UTC)
Okay, that's not good. :) You're right, removing and adding the tag will fix it. I'll just have to do that whenever I stumble upon an old logo. I think having the HQFL logos in a separate category will ease up work for anyone searching for already uploaded badges. Good or bad idea? --Elisson 17:25, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

What a lovely piece of work!

Hey Johan! Although my brother used to live in Sweden (Karlstad) and I once visited your country (1998 for a negatively unforgetable football-match Chelsea-VfB Stuttgart), I'm not able to say something more in swedish like: jäg älsger dir, and I'm convinced, I wrote it absolutely wrong. So, I do have to ask you something in english not with my poor swedish.

As we (some Football-maniacs from Germany, Austria and Switzerland) try to improve the content of our Football articles, we were editing the Football Kits. We don't know about the worldwide connections of wikipedia and if we just can copy "your" contets/images, so I wanted to ask you, if you could share the kits you collected in the wikipedia-Common Place. Dankeschön aus Deutschland! --Heinz Van Eugen

Hi, not all of the kits are created by me, but I guess all of them are marked as GNU, so I guess I speak for all the creators when I say natürlich! Although I haven't got the time to do the work of re-uploading them at commons. But please, go ahead and do so if you wish. :) -- Elisson | Talk 18:48, 19 May 2005 (UTC)
Tysend Tak (or something like that!) I'm gonna upload them in the next days. Heinz Van Eugen

Association football portal

I am willing to help in any way needed with the soccer portal. Phoenix2 20:53, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks! I mainly want people to help me with keeping the "news and events" up to date, changing the "did you know" once in a while, and also changing the featured article and picture maybe twice a month, or something (of course more often later on if the portal grows and becomes more active). If you would help on doing that, I'd be very grateful! -- Elisson | Talk 20:59, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yes...I will keep all further discussions about the portal on it's talk page. Phoenix2 21:49, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello

Hello Elisson :) I came to keep you company so that you don't get lonely.

So...how's life? I read your welcome message on your userpage. I'm not sure why, but welcome messages in general bother me. I feel like somebody just slapped a boilerplate on my page. Some welcome messages are condescending also. Lucky for me, I never got welcomed to wikipedia, and that's the way I like it :D.

I got "welcomed" to wikinews recently. People somehow assume that if you have a blank talk page that makes you a newbie. Well, I already knew how things worked, seeing as I first discovered wikinews in December 2004...

People should probably look at the date of a users' first contribution before welcoming them- ah well, they're just trying to help :) Maybe I'm just an angry person. I'm not mad at them I guess, or at least I shouldn't be. Now I feel like a jerk...

Speaking about wikinews, I don't personally find it that useful. Typically, the most useful stories on wikinews are stories with original reporting (there should be more of those). There's no point in reading a summary of CNN- especially if it appears hours later.

Another problem with the wiki model when reporting news is that I like to read a story once, and only once. I don't want to have to keep on checking back on the page to see the latest developments. Maybe pages on wikinews should be protected before actually being published? Oh well, wikinews is new, and it's still in beta. Maybe after it has time to grow, it'll be truly valuble...or maybe it'll always suck ;) Or maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about.

One huge problem is that wikinews will never have the resources that other large news organizations have. Anyhow, it was nice talking to you, see you around! -Frazzydee| 17:02, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Template:Football arena

I think you'd like to know that the redirect would've worked better if you wrote 'REDIRECT' in capitals. Cheers! - Mgm|(talk) June 29, 2005 18:19 (UTC)

I didn't redirect it, I moved it to a more proper name, Template:Football stadium, and thus a redirect was created automatically. The redirect worked just fine, but there was no need for it, so I speedied it. I know how the redirects work, but thanks anyway. :) -- Elisson | Talk 29 June 2005 20:54 (UTC)

Hi, I've noticed that you are active on Swedish topics. I'm trying to breathe some life into the Swedish Wikipedians' notice board. My hope is that Wikipedians interested in Swedish topics will watch this page and use it to keep track of ongoing debates and votes relating to Swedish articles, and as a place to list "weak spots" they don't have the time or knowledge to fix, in order to attract the attention of someone knowledgeable in a specific area. Would you consider signing up? / Alarm 30 June 2005 18:50 (UTC)

I'll sign up, but I don't know if I'll be very active there. But I'll try! -- Elisson | Talk 30 June 2005 22:14 (UTC)
Great to see you joining! You certainly don't need to take on any specific task. I just hope we can use it as an information hub when we stumble upon something that might be of interest to other Swedes - such as the IFK Göteborg FAC nomination. If you notice an interesting debate and/or vote going on relating to an article on Swedish matters, it would be great if you could post a short notice under "News". (Oh, and I promise to take a good look at IFK Göteborg soon - judging by my first impression I guess you can count on my support!) / Alarm 30 June 2005 22:51 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Football

Hi Johan, just saw this today. I think it's a great idea to standardize the pages, but it's a huge undertaking. I pretty much did that for the national teams and also spent a lot of time making sure the pages for MLS clubs in the US are consistent. But to do it on a world-wide scale is hard. As for players... There are thousands of articles, and each editor does it differently. I've cleaned up so many of them (and keep a close eye on all USA-related players), but to keep track of everyone would be insane, unless someone takes a country or something. Anyway, I would be glad to help you out on this. I spend way too much time cleaning up soccer stuff as is. Formerly Dryazan, --DR31 (talk) 20:18, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, it's a big task, and I won't be able to handle it myself. And I don't believe that all football articles ever will follow a unified standard, but I do hope that as many as possible do, and that's why I started the project. Glad to hear you might join in, I was hoping for you :), sign up here and make any suggestions or changes you think fit. I am also planning to make a subpage of the clubs manual of style page about the special infobox for the MLS teams, and other subpages about the special templates used for clubs and articles related to a special subject, for example a league or a country. -- ElissonTalk 20:29, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

More on Wikiproject football - to follow on from what Dryazan said

I'd love to join this thing - I invision myself working on the squad lists for the various clubs (particularly the English clubs) and keeping those as much up to date as possible - as soon as I give myself time to convert them. How would that sound to you?

Sounds good! Just sign up at the project page and join in! Any contribution is wanted, and keeping squads for many teams up to date, and also having a standard for them (check the proposal for club articles on the project page) would be great! -- Elisson Talk 11:07, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

And, while I'm at it, commiserations about the match against Gefle. Hopefully your team can regain some of their previous good form. Bobo192|Edits

I've already had the conversation about the categorization issue - to be honest, I can't remember what the general opinion was that should be done. I think I'll take it up with Forbsey first before I make any moves. Personally I'm quite proud of the work I've done here - though I know it's not by any means as perfect as I wanted it to be - plus it's not entirely finished yet, it will look really good when it's done. I'm going to join Wikiproject football right now. Thank you. Bobo192|Edits
Hi Johan. Sorry for taking a while to get back to you about changing Scottish football seasons and Category:Scottish football seasons to Seasons in Scottish football and Category:Seasons in Scottish football. It sounds like a good idea to standardize football related stuff but I'll wait until I have completed all of the articles (40 or so left) and then I'll change everything. Re:Polish-Swedish War help request

Hi, I answered a question for help with Swedish commanders about a week ago on the above article talk page. I have been doing a few other things, but I am now free to help out if you need anything. Just give me a list (post it here, I'll keep an eye open, a.k.a. adding this page to my watchlist) of Sweden-related things you need and I'll see what I can find. -- Elisson Talk 20:41, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

Tnx! I am a bit busy now (moving into US, startng a PhD here) and I don't have Internet access at home ATM so I cannot work on this as I used to. But for starters, if you can check what Swedish language online sources are there on those conflicts, see if there are any names (people, places) and dates that can be added, perhaps some other details that can be translated and added? So far, this article may present mostly Polish POV cause I based it on a combination of English and Polish translated articles I found. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 21:40, 16 August 2005 (UTC)
Could you find some info and create a stubs on: a) Arwid Wittenberg (first name may be polonised) - a Swedish marshall/high ranking military officer around 1650s b) Lars Cantersten, Swedish envoy to Poland of approximately the same period c) Anders Lennartson, Swedish high military officer around 1605 d) Johann Streiff von Lawentstein and Maxymilian Teuffl - more Swedish officers around 1626 e) what was the name of another Swedish supporter, Jan, count of Ren mentioned in my PSW article? f) Jan Wilhelm Reingraff as above g) what do Swedish sources say about the Truce of Altmar 1629 and the Treaty of Sztumska Wieś of 1634 (and what is its Swedish name)? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 23:37, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
Status:
a) Done. Translated the very extensive Swedish article on him.
b) – f) will be looked upon later on.
g) What do you want to know more exactly? I've got a good Swedish book on all Swedish treaties and peaces that have been concluded ever, which has about one page of info on the Truce of Altmar. The treaty of 1634 you refer to, do you mean the Treaty of Stuhmsdorf (Swedish name seems to be Treaty of Stuhmsdorff, note the extra f in the end) of 1635? About a page in the book on that one too. -- Elisson Talk 01:06, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
Yes, 1635. Tnx for the great work on Arwid Wittenberg! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 22:19, 20 August 2005 (UTC)

Swedish football divisions

I think the articles Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 should probably be moved, and disambig pages created at those locations, as the terms are widely used in other countries (England, Scotland, Wales etc.) - see also First Division, Second Division and Third Division, which mean the same thing, in Britain at least. I'm happy to write the disambig page, but I thought I'd ask you where's a better place to put the articles - I see that you moved them already from Swedish Division 1. Can I move them back there, or is there a better, more official name for the divisions? Cheers, sjorford (?!) 08:46, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

I would prefer to keep the articles where they are (there are no better names, no prefixes or suffixes to add, they are named Division # officially, no extra league name or anything), as there seems to be no current challenger to the article names (the English, Scottish and Welsh leagues already have their own article names), however, why not simply link to First Division, Second Division and Third Division in the disambig messages already there? I'm not completely against moving the articles, but I'd prefer not to, and there seems to be no overwhelming argument to why they need to be moved. -- Elisson Talk 16:42, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
I see your point - it's interesting that there is no name for the league as a whole (are they run directly by the Swedish FA then?) but I still think they ought to be disambiguated as a matter of principle. Division 1 (Sweden) would probably be the best alternative, from what you're saying. sjorford (?!) 08:22, 24 August 2005 (UTC)
That's the case in all countries in Scandinavia, IIRC, that all higher leagues (in Sweden: Allsvenskan, Superettan, Division 2, Division 3, and from 2006 on the restarted Division 1) are controlled directly by the FA of the country. I really don't like the move, but if it really is neccessary... :( If you do all the relinking? Your name Division 1 (Sweden) is better than Swedish Division 1, btw. -- Elisson Talk 13:15, 24 August 2005 (UTC)

Västra Frölunda HC

If I remember it correctly, you were the one putting up Frölunda HC as a request on the WP:SWNB. Some time ago an article was created at Västra Frölunda HC. Should it be moved to Frölunda HC or should the latter redirect to the former? Also, I think the text could do with some copyediting, but this is really not my area of expertise. Infobox

Could you please stop adding useless empty variables to articles until we have discussed thoroughly how to do with the infobox? -- Elisson Talk 21:04, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

Already answered you on WikiProject_Football#Football_club_infobox_and_sponsors.
And I would appreciate you stop calling things "useless". That's obviously your opinion and I don't appreciate the name calling. You could've said just "empty variables" without the need to get aggresive, same goes for the talk page itself. We're both adults.

Infobox 2

(Re: Örgryte IS). With all due respect, can you point me to a statement claiming the infobox must be at the top? This is on grounds of principal important because the infobox is not on the top of several articles, including both Gothenburg and Stockholm, yet no-one has complained, and I personally think it looks better. // Fred-Chess 16:13, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Actually, it doesn't matter. Sorry to have bothered you :-) // Fred-Chess 16:26, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
Okay. :) I just thought it was looking ugly having the text at the top but the infobox floating a row down from the top. :) Well, your change brought my attention to the problem with the text not starting at the top of the article, so I fixed it in all articles. :) -- Elisson Talk 16:59, 20 October 2005 (UTC)

Sneaky vandalism

Hi, Johan, how's it going? I've missed you on IRC. Re your edit to Charles II: er, no, my edit summary didn't refer to the football. Please scroll down here and you'll see the sneaky vandalism on the left. I zapped the football sentence as an afterthought, because I thought it misplaced in the Lead section. Maybe you could find a better spot for it? Best, Bishonen | talk 18:53, 3 November 2005 (UTC).

I've had a hard time finding any time for being active on #wikipedia, plus the fact that my computer isn't in the best shape, but I'll return to the channel as things in school calm down and my new computer is delivered. :) I saw the other edit as well, I just did believe that you thought the football part was sneaky vandalism as well, which I thought at a first glance on the article a while ago (at a time when the article actually said that he gave football (soccer) a royal approval, a sport which wasn't invented until the 19th century...). I have no idea where that info might be better suited. -- Elisson Talk 21:17, 3 November 2005 (UTC)

User:Johan Elisson/history of Sweden

Just found this work of yours (through a "What links here"). Perhaps we should move it to the Sw. Wikipedians Notice Board WP:SWNB somewhere?

I'd prefer to have it as a subpage of my user page, but I don't see any problem with a link to the page from the notice board. -- Elisson Talk 19:22, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for telling me. I would also like to ask you, although I don't know your interests, if you might be interested in managing the notice board or part of it? The problem has been a lack of activity, but I think it has potential (as does the Portal:Sweden), aswell as being rewarding. I think if we would get some activity that would make a lot of difference. And I promise not to interfere with anything you do. :-) // Fred-Chess 07:59, 30 November 2005 (UTC)
Sorry, but I have no interrest in managing the notice board, or rather, I have no time over to manage it. I've already got my real life ;), WikiProject Football, Football Portal and a lot of other things to handle. I also see potential in the board, but I am not the right man to make it grow. Sorry. :( -- Elisson Talk 17:19, 30 November 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Article improvement drive

Hi Johan,

I'm restarting the Football AID. I'd posted a comment on the Project talk page regarding this. I'm willing to take on the responsibility of updating the drive page, templates, and other things that need to be done. I'll need one of you, the older members who were there when the drive first began, to tell me if what I'm doing is right, since I haven't done this before. Please let me know what you think about it, and anything that I need to do. Thanks. -Aabha (talk) 10:21, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

I'll watch the progress, and keep an eye open, but I won't be able to contribute very much at the moment as there are several things I need to do in real life currently. :) -- Elisson Talk 19:05, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
