The_Cornell_Center_for_Hospitality_Research AfC queries edit

{{helpme}} I have been trying to get a page published for months (The Center for Hospitality Research) and I keep running into problems which I dont understand b/c I've looked at numerous other pages that are published that do not seem to have the reliable sources that mine is being held for. How do I get this page published? Can an editor do it for me? Thank you. (Jmh222 (talk) 16:32, 4 August 2009 (UTC))Reply

The fact that policy-violating articles manage to sneak in under the radar is not just cause for policy to be waived in regard to your article. Unfortunately, looking at the page, you still have not addressed the cause for the declinations. Whilst there would now appear to be two third-party sources under the reference header, they are not cited, so we don't even know what they are sources for. You need to add in-line citations to the article, and get rid of the primary sources that are still there. Also, the article is littered with external links, including the huge list under Corporate Affiliates. I feel that in its current state any attempt to have the article reviewed for creation again would just result in another declination. AJCham ᵀᴬᴸᴷ 17:01, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

{{helpme}} Thank you for your answers, external links are not something that should be in Wikipedia articles? The problem is that I don't understand how to reference or cite verifiable sources, I have tried to set it up similar to the way other pages are set up (using them as an example for how to make this page) and its not working. We have numerous publications and ads in magazines and websites from around the world but I don't understand how to link them to one thing particular in the article? Is it possible to have an editor set up this page for me if I give them the content and sources? I tried doing that first but never got any responses about the status. Thank you (Jmh222 (talk) 20:33, 5 August 2009 (UTC))Reply

I don't know whether or not you would be able to interest an editor into writing the article. What I will say is that you don't necessarily need to be worried about creating a 'complete' article at this point. If you can create enough of an article as a starting point, any interested editors will be able to get involved once it hits the mainspace. As long as the article meets the following criteria, it should be acceptable, even if it were whittled down to a stub:
  • You establish the notability of the Center. This must be verifiable. See WP:NOTABLE.
  • You cite reliable and verifiable, third party sources. See WP:VERIFY and WP:THIRDPARTY.
  • Keep external links to a minimum - only include them if they really benefit the article, and even then, don't put them in the body of the article. Cite them as references where appropriate, or place them under an External Links heading at the bottom of the page. See WP:LINKS.
If you want a little more help on how to cite references, you can look at WP:CITE.
I know I've thrown a lot of things at you, but if you want more specific/personal advice or help, feel free to leave a message on my talk page, or better, you could access #wikipedia-en-help on irc.freenode.net for live help chat. You'll probably find me there, but if not another editor may be able to help. Try http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=wikipedia-en-help to connect via your browser. How does any of this work? edit

{{helpme}} Im trying to create a page for the center I work for and have tried making a practice page so that I can create the whole page then move it to live once we're ready (user:jmh222) and I can't figure out how to upload images, or make any edits...Can you help? --Jmh222 (talk) 17:21, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

You can upload images after you have been here for four days and made ten edits. That being said, you should not create an article about something you are closely involved with; please see our guideline on conflict of interest. Please also read our guide to writing your first article and all of the associated policies linked from that page. If you feel the article should still be created, visit this page, where you can request that someone neutral create the article. //roux   17:25, 17 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I read the COI and the guides, I was at the stage of creating a user space (#6) where I could build the page and then move it to become live;

6. Consider creating the article first in your user space As a registered user, you have your own user space. You can start your new article there, on a subpage; you can get it in shape, take your time, ask other editors to help work on it, and only move it into the "live" Wikipedia once it is ready to go. To create your own subpage, see here. When your new article is ready for "prime time", you can move it into the main area.

Can I not create new pages?

You can, just not where you have a conflict of interest. For those pages, please visit here, where someone will evaluate your request against Wikipedia norms. Also, please rememebr to sign your talkpage comments using four tildes (~~~~) to insert your signature. //roux   05:55, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your help with this! I put in a request (Cornell University's Center for Hospitality Research) on the request page, do you have any idea how long this usually takes? A few days, a year? (Jmh222 (talk) 13:02, 18 March 2009 (UTC))Reply

Roux, I hate you for stealing my newbie! :) As for the last question, it usually depends on who takes in interest in creating the article. I'd give it about a month, someone is sure to create it in that span of time. Papercutbiology♫ (talk) 13:44, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ok thanks! (Sorry I have about a million questions) When you say 'create the article' does that mean an editor is going to create the entire page and put information on it, or will they just be giving me a blank template that I will get to edit? Because we have specific information and images we want on the page, so I just wanted to make sure. (Jmh222 (talk) 14:18, 18 March 2009 (UTC))Reply

It means another editor may create the entire page, if it meets our inclusion criteria. As I'm fairly certain I told you on IRC, you cannot use Wikipedia to promote your organisation. The fact that you want specific things in the article is also troubling. Are those things backed up by completely independent, verifiable and reliable sources? //roux   14:21, 18 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes I understand all of the COI guidlines and such, our page will be 100% backed up with verifiable and reliable sources, we are an educational institution and are not using Wikipedia to promote our organization, it will be just like other pages for Cornell University that exist, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornell_School_of_Hotel_Administration) we are linked through the School of Hotel Administration. I was under the impression that I would be able to create our page and set it up like other Cornell pages, I didn't realize someone else would be doing it. That's where my confusion came in. Just trying to make sure I understand it all-thanks! (Jmh222 (talk) 15:30, 18 March 2009 (UTC))Reply

I'm trying to find out what the status of my page is, it has been over a month and I'm not sure how to find out if its being edited, can you help? Thank you! Jmh222 (talk) 14:51, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. Your article has been placed back on hold, pending some improvements that have been requested. You can find a recent comment by a reviewer at the above link, just under the banners.

  • And just FYI, as I noticed your question above, your article is not a "live" article yet. It is at the articles for creation project, where you can work on it without worrying about it being deleted, and the reviewers are there to help you make sure it's in line with various Wikipedia policies, such as verifiability and notability. Once it has been improved such that the reviewers believe it meets those policies, it will be moved over to "article-space". Feel free to continue to edit it in response to comments, or ask questions or post comments yourself (you can do this at the top of the article, just make sure to sign your comments). Hope this clears up any questions you might have. Raven1977Talk to meMy edits 18:27, 24 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Help with article sources edit

It's pretty simple - they may be reliable, but they're "first party", in otherwords it's "themselves talking about themselves". According to the Wikipedia guidelines Notability and Reliable sources it's not enough. What you need is third party, which means someone not associated with the company/school/person cover it. I hope that answers your question?MPJ-DK (talk) 17:04, 30 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think my references are third party now? Am I still wrong? (Jmh222 (talk) 14:33, 21 May 2009 (UTC))Reply

How do I get this page published? I have sources from outside parties, what do I need to do to get this page going? Thank you. (Jmh222 (talk) 14:27, 11 June 2009 (UTC))Reply

Which page edit

I'm sorry I'm not sure exactly what page you're referring to, I've reviewed quite a few pages so please tell me which one - it's probably just because I've overlooked it when going through the requests. MPJ-DK (talk) 05:13, 17 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alright I've had a look at the page, it has some basic flaws that need to be addressed, but I'd be happy to help you work on it and then create it for you if the problems can be solved.
  • Part of the article reads more like an ad than an encyclopedic article.
  • External links in the article should be in the form of references, not like it is now where you link to names etc off the wikipedia cite.
  • The sources listed under "Sources" are either primary sources or wikipedia links, neither of which fall under the category "reliable 3rd party sources", and problably why someone declined it after I put it on hold.
  • The "References" section looks okay, you just can't see what part of the article the references cover.

You need to address all these problems, it's not just sources that's the problem - that was just the most obvious one. MPJ-DK (talk) 13:30, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
