my sandbox pages

I am curious to why are you reviewing my sandbox pages? Govvy (talk) 08:33, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

@Govvy: I'd hazard a guess that Jmcgnh is just being thorough. I wouldn't worry about it. Cesdeva (talk) 15:09, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
@Govvy and Casdeva: sorry, I hope I didn't alarm you. Every once in a while I go on a bout of new page reviewing in userspace, usually either 30 days old or 3-4 days old. Most of the time, as in your case, pages are just fine and I simply mark them as reviewed (which is not at all the same as reviews at articles for creation). But sometimes I find items that are in need of reporting or new users that have never been properly welcomed. It may not be the highest priority task on WP, but it's a small effort on my part to help the project. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 17:39, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
Interesting, well I put forward my account for auto-patrolled group as I do like to mess around in the sandpit! Govvy (talk) 17:55, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
@Govvy: I see they gave you the autopatrolled bit. Congrats. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 14:23, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Pywikibot

If you need any assistance getting up to speed with Pywikibot, let me know. I run Wikiversity:User:MaintenanceBot and have many examples I can share. Best to contact me at Wikiversity:User_talk:Dave Braunschweig. -- Dave Braunschweig (talk) 15:57, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. I've responded there, as you requested here, even though there you seemed to suggest that I respond here. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 19:00, 6 June 2018 (UTC)

My edit to Salim Barakat entry

thank you so much for your help.

I still have a problem with the References. What is meant by "Ref group" in the Template?

Aviva Butt (talk) 00:48, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

@Aviva Butt: Reference groups can be used to separate references into groups when creating the reference list at the end of the article. It's somewhat uncommon to use them. It is safe to leave it blank until you have a reason to use them. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 01:10, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Salim Barakat entry REFERENCES

I think I have inserted a correct reference under the References (5). I am unable to remove the now unneeded number (6) below it. I hope you will fix that and all will be O.K. If so, I will go on to do another edit to another entry (Mahmoud Darwish), along similar lines -- I have written another article about Salim Barakat (this entry) that will appear in August, and I will come back to the present entry. Aviva Butt (talk) 04:13, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

Some bubble tea for you!

Thank you for the Teahouse assist! Hello-Mary-H (talk) 22:45, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Salim Barakat entry ref Tag problem

I removed the extra numbering under the References, and again a tag error appeared. I am unable to fix the below error.

Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). </poem>Cite error: The opening <ref> tag is malformed or has a bad name (see the help page).

What should I do? What tags should appear at the beginning and end of the body of the text, and what tags should surround the Reference (inserted manually at the end of the body of the text? Aviva Butt (talk) 04:47, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

@Aviva Butt: I was attempting to fix the problem, but we can't both be editing the page at the same time.
I removed a ref that was just a Google search URL. Those cannot be used as references.
I'm rather dismayed to see that your username matches one of the authors being cited. This constitutes conflict-of-interest editing which might be permitted on a draft, but once an article is in mainspace, you should confine yourself to making edit requests on the talk page of the article, not editing the article directly.
There's probably more to say about all this, but I have to go offline for a while and will pick up the topic tomorrow. Please feel free to ask in the Teahouse if you need answers before I get back to you. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 04:54, 27 June 2018 (UTC)
@Aviva Butt: Sorry for the additional tagging, I'm not opposed to your editing but I have enough experience with the rules around here to know when something needs to be reported (copyvio) and when what is hopefully just a gentle nudge to the editor is all that's required (COI). There are ways to make this all work, but it becomes considerably more complicated than most normal editing when these sorts of issues arise. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 05:29, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

More from Aviva Butt

User:AB Regarding my edit to the Salim Barakat entry. I hope all issues are resolved. I today saw two queries, one about a possible conflict in content (DYK Talk), and the other about copyright. I hope I replied on the right TALK page. I replied firstly to DYK talk:

{{DYK talk}}|15 February|2011|entry=... that despite being of Kurdish origins, Syrian writer Salim Barakat is considered one of the most innovative poets and novelists writing in the Arabic language?}}

{{AB talk}} DYK's statement is correct in context. However, one might add that Salim Barakat writes in Arabic and academics in Europe, who make a sharp division between Arabic and Persian studies in the departments of their universities, do not concern themselves with Barakat's Islamic or Persian sources or take into account that Islamic poets may write on Islamic subjects in a language of their choice. This is because Islamic poetry is not defined by language, but rather by cultural movements.

Then I replied to the query on copyright. {{AB talk}} I wish to state that my edit to the Salim Barakat entry is a rewrite that is referenced. It does not infringe copyright. Research for what I have said is discussed in the DergiPark IJOKS article in the References, an article that I myself wrote. In this same article, I published the entire long poem of six stanzas from which I took a few lines for the Wikipedia entry. The translation from the Arabic is my own. I translated four whole poems for the article (the longest one as Appendix), which the editors accepted although unusual in an article on literary criticism. This is because translations to English of Barakat's poems are not available elsewhere. As a Kurdish poet, Salim Barakat is of great interest in Turkish Kurdistan. Worthy of note is that these scholars and academics speak Turkish and Kurdish, and are familiar with English, but their knowledge of Arabic might be limited to qur'anic studies. Aviva Butt (talk) 02:07, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

@Aviva Butt: All discussion about the Salim Barakat article needs to happen on its talk page, which I see you have just commented on, or, with respect to the copyright issues, on the page where it is being discussed at: WP:Copyright problems/2018 June 29#Salim Barakat. Copyright is awfully complicated and copyright violations are particularly toxic to Wikipedia. As best I can understand it, for your translation to appear on Wikipedia, we would need a release from both you and Barakat.
Your conflict-of-interest will remain an issue until you post a disclosure or disclaimer on your talk page and on the talk page of the article.
My talk page is not a suitable venue for working out these issues. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 03:28, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
