This intro appears much less USA focused and more general wrt to REITs. As someone just learning about REITs I found your markup to appear more like a wikipedia article.
As for a suggested edit, I wonder if the 90% figure should not be changed to something more general such as "REITs are required to distribute most or all of their taxable income into the hands of its investors"
