To do the inline citations, just do <ref>....citation....</ref> and at the end of the article create a section called References and put

Re:Inline citations edit

Inline citations are references in the text that appear as a number after sentences in articles, like. [1] You can add them by putting the link inside <ref> and </ref> tags. help me I cannot load my references on to the correct area (I'm new to this) my article is Bonkyl Kirk.

  • No one will ever respond to [[help me]]. If you had typed {{helpme}} they would have. Can you see the difference?

  • When you were creating Bonkyl Kirk did you see a comment "see Wikipedia:Footnotes on how to create references". Did you consider following the link? You need go no further than Duns to see refs in use - open the page in edit mode and look at the wiki markup.
  • talking of wiki markup, when creating an ordered list, the arseterix goes at the start of the line, not the end!
  • the website for Bonkyl Kirk is rather vague about where it is. I have given the grid ref for Edrom kirk, which I believe is different. Please correct.

As you have probably seen, this article is not going to be deleted. It may possibly be of interest to you to know that I looked at the edit history of the editor who proposed it for deletion, and i am not sure if I have ever case where so large a proportion of an editor's actions is to suggest deletion of articles. Citations edit

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia; you have been doing some very good work here. However, one thing you have tended not to do is give citations for where your information comes from. For example, in Bonkyl Kirk you say "there has been a religious establishment at Bonkyl since the early 12th century": evidently you must have got this information from somewhere, and it would help if you could say what your sources are. Apart from the fact that where the information comes from may be useful and/or interesting to some users, it is essential to be able to justify information included, as information which is not referenced to a source is likely sooner or later to be questioned, and perhaps removed. I plan to insert anoter article Friday or Saturday. as soon as it is finished I shall let you know and hear your comments. I know what you are saying and it is so true, we are all new at one pont or another. As a writer, I do refer to Wikipedian a lot, not for that writer's actual comments but to refer to the references the writer has given. I find it a quick and useful reference point.

I know one or two articles on the site, which I know contains a lot of inaccurate information, I would love to edit or, at least, inform the editor who uploaded then. Unfortunately I know the author of the articles and I don't think it would go down too well. Dunglass Church edit

The only reverted edits were to an unregistered user. I'm assuming that was you looking at the talk page for that edit. I don't see anything unconstructive about them ither than one where you used the wrong characters so instead of a wikilink it cam out as 99Sir Alexander Home00 instead of Sir Alexander Home. Reverting the entire edit for that seems a bit steep. Don't get disheartened about it. It happens to us all at times, as the warning messages which are standard templates can be a bit brusque at times. I'll put the edits back in and see what happens. It could be this edit was getting 'upset' because there was not edit summary. NtheP (talk)

Ok done. The only thing I can thunk is the Sir Alexander Home bit. Which even when wikilinked is unclear as there are several. I think looking at the dates it's Sir Alexander Home of that Ilk, father of Alexander Home, 1st Lord Home - unless you know better :-) There isn't an article for Sir A of that Ilk hence the redlink. Formatting edit

I've just looked over the Lyne Church article and I'd point out a couple of things.
1) Use of [[ ]] Make sure you don't get punctuation inside the brackets [[Glasgow.]] won't find Glasgow whereas [[Glasgow]]. will. Use preview before you save and if a link is in red it means you've possibly got the formatting wrong if you're sure the article referred to exists.

Grid references edit

Since most of the historic churches about which you are writing are listed buildings, you may want to look up the relevant listed building report when you are researching them. The Historic Scotland search page can be found here. Please add the page to the relevant category, eg Category:Category A listed buildings, Category:Category B listed buildings or Category:Category C listed buildings, and Category:Listed churches in Scotland. Another tip for you when uploading Geograph images:
  • On the Geograph photo page, click on the link under the photo that says "Find out how to reuse this Image";
  • Scroll down to where it says "Wikipedia Template for image page."
  • Copy the text in the window below, and paste it into the basic upload window at Commons.
The result is that the license, photo location, photographer, and a backlink are retained, so there's no need to fill these in yourself. I only found this myself recently, saves loads of time! Regards, Jonathan Oldenbuck (talk) 12:16, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jimmy. Having just edited your Ayton Parish Church, I would urge you once again not to rush. I found an article littered with mis-spelling, poor grammar, and badly formatted links. Please take time when drafting an article to:

  • check your spelling, there are plenty of spell-checkers available to help;
  • check grammar, punctuation, and phrasing, this is quite hard to do when you are typing away, I know, but read back what you have written to make sure it makes sense;
  • in particular, make sure section headers are right. "Early minister in Post Refomation" is both mis-spelled and ungrammatical (I changed it to "List of Post-Reformation ministers");
  • check references and external links. For example, a ref in the Ayton Parish Church page linked here, which isn't going to tell the reader anything;
  • one specific point, use hyphens (-) for things like "north-west", use &ndash; for ranges, such as 1845–1856.

Reading through Wikipedia:Writing better articles may give you further assistance and pointers. You are doing a great job of adding some interesting and worthwhile material to the encyclopedia, so don't let my carping put you off! But remember that there is no deadline. If you take a bit more care in drafting, the end result will be something you can be a wee bit more proud of. Hello again, you certainly seem keen to learn which is great. Look under the edit window when you are editing a page, below the Save page / Show preview buttons, you should see a small pull-down menu with the word "Insert", and a row of symbols next to it. Click on one of the symbols and it will appear at the cursor in the edit window. Pull down the menu and choose "Latin", the symbols will change to a selection of accented vowels and other special characters, including æ. (I found the pull-down didn't work on Internet Explorer so I now use Firefox). Having said all that, to get Fasti ecclesiæ scoticanæ, I simply copied and pasted it from the Internet Archive page! You need to move the article to a new title, using the "move" tab at the top of the page, next to edit and history tabs. Type in the corrected title, and give a reason (ie. Gordon edit

Great work on Gordon, Berwickshire but as this seems to be the only place of that name in the Scottish Borders council area, I have moved the article to Gordon, Scottish Borders, in accordance with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Scotland. This also helps with several redlinks in existing articles which are to the latter name. Well, if you want to create a page, the easiest way is to type the article name into the search box and click 'go'. If there is no article with that name, you get search results, but with a line that says, "You may create the page "(redlink here)", but consider checking the search results below to see whether it is already covered." Re: Firefox edit

For a general comparison, there are some reviews here and here, a bit old but still largely relevant. In terms of Wikipedia, there are more customisation options and tools for Firefox than for IE. Also small things like columns of footnotes don't work at all in IE. Compare tools for Firefox with tools for IE. You may or may not want to use this stuff, if not there's not much practical difference between the two. I managed fine with IE for years. Prestongrange Parish Church edit

Hi Pansmanser, Thanks for your help. I haven't been on for quite a while, been busy doing other things but Wikipedia can be very addictive and it is difficult to stop. I do a bit of writing and constantly refer to Wikipedia but always check the sources provided by the given Wikipedian then I check the sources, I suppose it is a lazy man's research. Some articles I have noticed on Prestonpans, 1.e. Northfield House and Hamilton House are actually quite inaccurate but I haven't had the heart, yet to go and alter them. Somerset levels edit

Hi, Thanks for your comments about the Somerset levels article. As far as the extent goes.. in the north are the Mendip Hills ie a line from Wells to Cheddar, Axbridge & across to Brean Down. In the south down to the Polden Hills ie Street, Somerset & across to Bridgwater. Hope that makes sense? What you may have seen emerging from the mists may have been Glastonbury Tor (thats what I've seen in the way you describe) or possibly Burrow Mump depending on where you were. I've seen the blanket of mist like that a few times, always on autumn mornings, but I think it depends on humidity, lack of wind etc so I'm not sure if there is a specific season. I have some vague thoughts of trying to get Somerset Levels to FA status, but River Parrett is going 1st.
