Hiranyagarbha edit

While editing I have come across Hiranyagarbha (source of the universe) and a ritual called Hiranyagarbham. I'm surmising that the latter is in honour of the deity. Is that correct? Would it be normal in Indian languages for the addition of an "m" to turn something into a ritual? Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:41, 9 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Your DYK edit

Just so you know: your DYK for Early Nationalists will be on the front page about 7 hours from now - shortly after noon New Delhi time - and will be there for 8 hours. Information is here: Template:Did you know/Queue. --MelanieN (talk) 23:14, 24 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

AWB edit

Hi Jim,

Part of the process to prove that you can use AWB is to demonstrate that you can follow instructions. The instructions start at the top of the page you showed me, and they then link to Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage. So take a look there and follow the instructions there. You do seem to have enough mainspace edits. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 05:49, 25 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Graeme I have requested for AWB at WP:AWB/CP please review my request. Thank you. Jim Carter (talk) 06:45, 25 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jim you tagged the above article as B class. Can you suggest me how it can be made fit for GA. I know neutrality is important and it needs to be stable. Any suggestions?--Skr15081997 (talk) 15:30, 28 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you @Skr15081997: for the message. I took a quick look at your article. I have fixed some minor problems and marked some places which need citations. I have noticed that you have mentioned frequent quotations in the article, remember every quotations must be followed by a source and it is preferable to use {{quotation}}. On the other hand some copyediting is also required. I think you must wait untill 16th May since some places like West Bengal are still having campaigns and then together we will discuss how to make more improvements. You can nominate an article for GA if it is complete and I think it need some more expansion too. BTW I would like to ping Sitush, he have some good knowledge in this topic. Thank you. Jim Carter (talk) 17:45, 28 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the suggestions Jim, I understand that GA articles need to be stable. As the campaigning is still going on in many places it needs time for the GA assessment. During this period I will expand the article and include the necessary details and citations also.--Skr15081997 (talk) 02:40, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Welcome :) I would also like to suggest you to see this. Thank you. Jim Carter (talk) 06:04, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Parui edit

In the Anubrata Mandal article, I have been puzzled about the shooting "in Parui", wondering why that is a redlink. Newspapers do refer to this as "the Parui case," but in a search I can't find any such place as Parui. I think we do need "Parui" in the article, since sources are calling it "the Parui case", but we also need some clarification of "Parui". One newspaper account says the killing occured "in Badnabagram village under Parui police station area in Birbhum's Kasba". Badnagabram is also a redlink. Would it be correct to say something like this: "independent candidate Sagar Ghosh was shot and killed at his home in the Parui district of Kasba, Kolkata." ? Give it some thought. --MelanieN (talk) 15:08, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Melanie, am confused, firstly Kasba, KolkataKasba, Birbhum. Secondly Parui is also a very very very small village, so small that it is not notable here in Wikipedia. Only Indian governments revenue department has paper reports of that village. Thirdly, Parui is not a district. Actually Parui is a village which has its tehsil under Badnagabram village and Badnagabram is under Birbhum district. World wide web has 0 informations about Parui or Badnagabram village. But we can say something like this "independent candidate Sagar Ghosh was shot and killed at his home in Parui, Birbhum." It's confusing, Do you have any more suggestion. Jim Carter (talk) 05:21, 3 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ok, thanks for clarifying. That's why I didn't just add something - I don't know the area. Your suggestion would work fine, go ahead and do it or something similar. Of course, you don't need to wikilink Birbhum since it is already wikilinked in the artice. I think the location should be given in the first sentence where you say the person was murdered - rather than in the later sentence where opponents accused Mandal. --MelanieN (talk) 14:31, 3 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

DYK credit edit

Hi, Jim! I see that you added me as co-creator at Template:Did you know nominations/Anubrata Mandal. I understand why you did this; you like to spread around the credit and acknowledge other people's help. But I actually wish you wouldn't do that. IMO the DYK credit should go to the person who created the article, period. Additional people should be listed only if they really were co-creators, not if they simply improved the article after it was created; I think that just confuses things. And in this case, when you added me as a creator, it changed the nature of the nomination, from a third-party nomination to a "self nom". Self nomination means it was nominated for DYK by the author of the article. A self nom has additional requirements, including the need to do a QPQ (quid pro quo) review of another nomination. It so happened that I DID do a review of another nomination, although as a third-party nominator I didn't have to, so it worked out OK in this case. But it could have delayed the nomination, as well as making it look like we were trying to get away with something.

Don't remove my name from the current DYK; the addition of my name has already been responded to (that is, somebody changed the labeling to "self nom") so it is set in stone. But in the future, please don't add me as a co-creator unless I really was a full collaborator in developing and creating the article. OK?

Thanks for the kind gesture! I know you only do this out of the generosity of your heart. But it isn't necessary and it can cause problems. --MelanieN (talk) 21:36, 3 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ok Melanie, I actually thought you will be happy to see that your help to improve the article is not in vain. Anyways, thanks for your help. Jim Carter (talk) 07:38, 4 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I know you do this out of generosity and gratitude - because you are such a nice person. And I do know that "improving an article" is never in vain if it makes the encyclopedia better. But DYK credit, and credit for creating an article - that belongs to the person who created it. In this case, that's you! --MelanieN (talk) 13:56, 4 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
It is you kindness that you don't want anything for your ingenious effort to make the encyclopedia better. Honestly am your disciple O:-) Jim Carter (talk) 05:20, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome. Whilst I have no doubt that you would make an excellent student, time spent on me teaching you the complexities of Photoshop is better spent improving Wikipedia. I'm sure that there are hundreds of introductory tutorials online that will give you grounding in the basics. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 10:12, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hmm. Ok. BTW have you noticed that my above reply has only timestamp but no signature, Although I have used four waves (~~~~) but it is only showing the timestamp. Do you know why it's happening? Jim Carter (talk) 10:31, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
No idea, and they're not waves, they're "tildes". Maybe you hit a wrong key and created an escape sequence the MediaWiki software didn't like. While we're on the topic of presentation, please consider changing the font on this page. It's very hard to read, particular with the background colour.  Philg88 talk 10:39, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Philg88: Can you read it now? Jim Carter (talk) 11:04, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

100% better, but maybe change the superscripted "talk" in your sig to dark blue. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 12:55, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Ok Philg88. Thank you for your kind advice. BTW I need to talk with you about an urgent topic, do you have some time now? 13:16, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sure, what's on your mind?  Philg88 talk 13:34, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Would you be interested in running for adminship? I've just had a quick look through your edits, and I think you would be an excellent candidate for RfA. It should help you with G13 work as well. Let me know if you're interested, and if so I'll write you up a nomination. (Again only timestamp but no signature) 13:52, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hey Jim Cartar, whilst I appreciate the undoubted kind intentions behind your suggestion, the answer is "thanks but no thanks". In my view, an RfA nomination involves a bit more than a "quick look" through an editor's contributions, and should ideally be proposed by one or more existing admins. Best,  Philg88 talk 17:05, 5 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Philg88:, when you are not sure about your contributions then you might ask Mr. Stradivarius to review your contributions, since he is an existing admin and an expert contribution reviewer of RfA candidates. On the other hand good standing editors like Zanhe, Madalibi etc will also second your nomination. I know you will be a good candidate for RfA, please think about it. Jim Carter (talk) 06:01, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Jim, it's not that I am unsure about my contributions, its just that if I do decide to go for an RfA then I want to go about it the right way. Once again, thank you for your kind suggestion.  Philg88 talk 06:33, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

As you wish. But in my opinion you can be a good admin :) Jim Carter (talk) 08:58, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Help with Vivek lall's page edit

Hi, my article was accepted, but the wikipedia crawlers haven't picked it up yet, so Google search doesn't show the page. Also, a comment says it is an orphan page, hence I linked it to another page, but still the message flashes.

Link-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vivek_Lall — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cactusfigure (talkcontribs) 04:35, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Cactusfigure:, thank you for the message. I have removed the orphan tag. But always try to add more links (atleast three).
It will soon appear on Google search, actually it takes some time to index new article on Google search. BTW I have also added {{INDEX}} tag; Which will speed up the proccess.
By the way, is Supriyakonde account is also yours? Jim Carter (talk) 07:03, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Actually the article IS an orphan, and I have restored the tag. "Orphan" means that there are no links FROM other articles TO this one. To make the article not an orphan, you need to insert his name into other articles and then wikilink it. Examples of articles where this might be possible: Reliance Industries; "notable alumni" sections at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and Wichita State University. --MelanieN (talk) 14:52, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
MelanieN I have added links to two article today morning, but I doubt those links have been removed. So it has become an orphan again :\ Jim Carter (talk) 15:41, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I have removed the orphan tag. Jim Carter (talk) 16:22, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
And you are correct; the article is not an orphan any longer. You successfully "de-orphaned" it. To see if an article is an orphan or not, use "what links here" on the tools menu [1]. --MelanieN (talk) 16:26, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you MelanieN for the suggestion, But I generally use AWB to see that :) (AWB is really fast) Jim Carter (talk) 16:40, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hola! @Jim Carter , thanks a lot, I will keep adding more links. Supriyakonde is a friend. :) Also, wanted to check with you this article comes only on India page that is -www.google.in, how do i make it international? so that article appears on www.google.com as well?

"Hey Buster why did you revert yourself?" edit

What happened was that after about 75 nominations, you were the first nominator to show the initiative to create a Nom/Second thread on the talk page. Out of habit I just did what I usually do. Afterwards I noticed that I had duplicated your efforts...so I reverted. Normally, there is a two week period for seconding and discussion. I appreciate your assistance. Don't worry, your nomination will most assuredly be seconded. ```Buster Seven Talk 15:21, 10 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Renata edit

Hi Jim. Is this based on circumstantial evidence, or do you know something definite? I would be very sad if so - we go back a long way. Thanks DBaK (talk) 19:53, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you DBak for the message, unfortunately she has become an inactive editor. She has not been around for more than a year now. See her last edit here. If an editor (with more than a thousand edits) has not edited more than a year then anyone can place {{retired}} tag on there Userpage followed by listing there name at WP:Missing.
It is really sad if a fellow editor goes missing but in this case if she ever returns, she can remove that tag from her userpage herself. I pray to god that all the missing editors return here again. Thank you. Jim Carter (talk) 07:04, 13 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much for that, and I'm sorry for the slow reply. I do hope that she comes back one day! Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 19:57, 18 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jim, I just saw this. Are you quite sure that Renata has retired, rather than having some other reason for not editing for this long? Note that the documentation for Template:Retired states: "This template should be placed on a userpage only by the concerned user, or by his or her request." By the way, WP:Missing is for missing articles. The link you probably meant was WP:WANTED. Renata is already listed there, as you probably know. Cheers, --Stfg (talk) 21:04, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Stfg and thank you for the message, I just missed this message :P. Don't worry friend I just replaced {{Retired}} by {{Not around}}. And actually this crazy shortcuts has just confused me. Actually I was refering to WP:Missing Wikipedians. Anyway, Thank you and happy editing   Jim Carter (talk) 07:10, 26 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Jim. Thanks for doing that. Yes, it's easy to overlook new posts in old threads. I do that often too. And yes, WP:Missing links to the page for articles wanted, while WP:Wanted links to the page for missing Wikipedians -- very confusing! {{Not around}} is supposed to only go on the user's talk page, so I've removed it from the user page but left the one you put on the talk page. Cheers, --Stfg (talk) 09:27, 26 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Okay, Thanks Stfg Jim Carter (talk) 09:55, 26 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the de-orphanage Barnstar edit

Thanks for the Barnstar; my first; much appreciated. You express regret that not much of a dent was made in the 119367-large backlog of orphaned articles. There is one positive way, though, from which you can view the data: in 7-days' time (when the requests for deletion have expired), the November 2006 folder will disappear, and the oldest orphan tag on the whole of the English wikipedia site will be November 2007. A full 12 months better. That, at least, can be celebrated :-) Congratulations! Cheers for now, TheAMmollusc (talk) 11:35, 13 May 2014 (UTC) and TheAMmollusc (talk) 06:10, 14 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

RfA Question edit

Hey Jim, I don't know what you are trying to prove by posting a question at Go Phightins! RfA when he already has 92 support !votes and no opposition. Clearly, he already has the trust of the community and doesn't need to be pestered like this.  Philg88 talk 09:50, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Indeed. I don't even understand the questions, especially the second. What on Earth are you trying to ask? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 09:54, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... I was aware that this must be raised by someone. Well @Anna Frodesiak and Philg88: actually I know he is trusted by the community... even I trust him. But the second question is not a personal attack but his answer will prove that how he react to personal attacks. You both already know that many newbies start the career on Wikipedia with ill behaviour towards other. I just want to understand how he behaves i.e. if he replies with rudeness or stay calm and try to answer the first question claimly. Now if you think I did something wrong feel free to revert it. Many thanks. Jim Carter (talk) 10:09, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Please don't take the question otherwise. I just wanted to see if he quickly snaps to personal attack or not. You can call it a test. Honestly I have assumed good faith while typing that question. Jim Carter (talk) 10:18, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think it was somewhat poor judgement on your part. Notice that your question is a test, not a question at all. Notice that it was a personal attack with the disclaimer that it was not a personal attack. If you want to be shown the way, just read the thousands of questions posed to RfA candidates over the years. See how your question differs? Anyway, I'd like to drop it. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 14:40, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hmm. My fault, actually this was the first time I ever have asked a question to RfA candidate. Thanks for the advice Anna Frodesiak it was very much needed. Anyway, I will remove the question now. Thanks again. Jim Carter (talk) 14:57, 24 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think abstract questions can sometimes be informative, more so than plain policy questions. I've asked questions like "if you had a magic wand, what policy would you change?" and others ask questions that are broad, wide open, just to see their state of mind. I never questioned your faith here, although I also don't think it was a well thought out question. Live and learn. Dennis Brown |  | WER 01:14, 25 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

No worries, Jim. I understood what you were trying to ask, and yeah, it could have been phrased differently, but after an unintentional debacle I started here by asking a question, I empathize with others whose questions cause blowback. It's all right.   Go Phightins! 01:17, 25 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Jim Cartar: I'm glad you've taken the advice to heart. You can see how questions like that could contribute to many of the criticisms of the RFA process and especially what the candidates are subjected to. Also, don't take it too harshly as Go Phightins! is sometimes known for asking particularly grueling and sometimes awkward questions of other candidates. Perhaps this is poetic justice (joke). I came back here because I saw the discussion about use of the mass notifications. I think your intentions were good but perhaps taking a little bit more time to assess the situation and to seek a second opinion on big things will aid you. Again, this is only advice to do with what you will but thought I'd offer in any regard. Mkdwtalk 15:48, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Mkdw for the message and honestly I'm very happy that you're on my talk page. And no I don't ever take comments from other editors harshly or personally because they are my friends. Hmm. I admit sending that mail was something I did too quickly (again, my fault). Now I'm happy that I have friends like you who will help me deciding the right way. Please forgive if I did something wrong. Thanks again for the message and happy editing   Jim Carter (talk) 18:48, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sir this page is about a senior secondary school , and i tried to give information about the school on the wikipedia page.As i feel wikipedia is a source of information for others. In my knowledge Article about the Senior secondary school can be published on wikipedia. one more thing i will edit the part which seems like an advertisement. Hi Lav16, thank you for the message. The article you have created needs a full rewrite. You can see other articles on secondary schools, the tone of your article is not like an encyclopedic article instead it is more likely an advertisement. On the other hand you have copied most of the text from the schools website (here, here and here). It is not allowed here, because it violates our copyvio policy. Another concern is that your article is not supported by reliable sources. Please see this. Wikipedia is not what you think, We need reliable third party sources to support an article. But if you think that you can fulfill the above concerns then I encourage you to contest this deletion here. Regards, Jim Carter (talk) 06:25, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) @Lav16: I'm a afraid that you cannot contest the deletion of an article with content that violates Wikipedia copyright policy. Such content will either need to be removed or rewritten in a non-promotional tone. As to your comment "Article about the Senior secondary school can be published on wikipedia", yes they can, but only if they meet the general notability guideline. In summary, that requires significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject of the article. That in turn only creates a presumption, not a guarantee, that the subject should be included in Wikipedia. At the moment, Suditi Global Academy falls short of the fundamental requirements for inclusion. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information.  Philg88 talk 07:21, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Praveen Prem edit

Hey Jim, please can you see if you can find some references on Praveen Prem in Hindi, Malayalam or whatever and add them to the article. I'm not asking you to !vote at the AfD, just to find the references. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:28, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Philg88: I have added some references and have changed some minor format problems. But it needs an urgent rewrite. And BTW can't I add my !vote at AfD? The article passes notability policy about actors. Jim Carter (talk) 15:15, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Namaste, my friend. What excellent work! Well done! Of course you can !vote if you want to. Cheers,  Philg88 talk 15:19, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Namaste to you too friend. I just !voted keep because it meets notability guidelines now.   Jim Carter (talk) 19:59, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Jim, I know that you're getting a lot of flak right now but I'm afraid I'm going to add to your woes. After you added the references to the Praveen article I praised you because, AGF, I assumed that they were valid. My bad. Now that I've checked, three out of the five (viz 4,6 and 7) are either broken or go somewhere unrelated, which is of no use whatsoever. I have done a lot of work trying to save this article from deletion and I don't want to see that effort wasted through poor referencing. Please fix or replace the references as soon as you can.  Philg88 talk 07:58, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
My mistake Philg88 I just overlooked them. Now I fixed 6 and 7; they were having very very very minor problems, see the change here and here. Now check the source and tell me if they are correct now. But what is the problem with reference 4?? Jim Carter (talk) 09:11, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Mistakes are made by humans and I'm also a human. Jim Carter (talk) 09:17, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Jim, thanks for doing that. 6 and 7 are now fine (although the pic in 6 looks nothing like Prem, but since I can't read the Tamil I'll accept it AGF). As for 4, I get "Server Error in '/' Application." Might be a Firefox thing, I don't know. As for mistakes, sure, we're only human but multiple sequential mistakes tend to grate a bit. "Very very minor" is besides the point, it can still cause a big big problem.  Philg88 talk 09:24, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Philg88: No the pic is of the reporter who reported about Prem in Tamil. If you get a server problem then you can replace it by this one. I got it just now. Jim Carter (talk) 09:34, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
And I will get an image of Prem; I will upload it by tomorrow.   Jim Carter (talk) 09:54, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Did you find one?  Philg88 talk 04:03, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Philg88: I found one. But I can't upload it unless the copyright status is clear; that is the image is free. I'm still searching for another image; If I get, I will ping you. Jim Carter (talk) 05:54, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Does it qualify under "fair use"?  Philg88 talk 06:06, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Philg88: the problem is source. The image was given by my friend but when I searched it on google similar images appear on multiple sites so the source as well as copyright status remains unclear. So I will search for a free image and would let you know when I get one. Don't worry I will get it by tomorrow maybe. Jim Carter (talk) 06:33, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

About deletion discussions edit

Regarding your comment on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Khwajagan Naqvi, then as far as I know you don't really need to do anything else with the article. You have nominated it for deletion, which requires a community discussion. The community will now discuss the merits of deletion and an uninvolved user will "close" the discussion when a rough consensus has been reached. From here on out, you won't have to handle anything. MezzoMezzo (talk) 04:40, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

MezzoMezzo I didn't mean what you are actually thinking. I was just concerned about the article and I expressed it by saying that. Generally I nominate article for AfD by expressing my concern or with a awkward comment  . Thank you for the message but I know what happens at AfD (Not at all my first time). Anyway, thank you very much for your message. I'm glad you are here. Jim Carter (talk) 05:35, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Talk:Château de Bercy edit

Why have you created a blank talkpage at Talk:Château de Bercy with only a {{talk page}} template? This template is intended for "Talk pages that attract frequent or perpetual debate, articles often subject to controversy, and highly-visible or popular topics" and, as stated in large bold letters in the template documentation, should not be added to otherwise empty talk pages. This isn't just process-for-the-sake-of-process - creating blank talkpages is inherently disruptive, as by changing the talkpage link from red to blue, it means people think there's something on the talkpage and waste time clicking into it. This is specifically spelled out at both the template documentation, and at Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#Creating talk pagesMogism (talk) 20:48, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

In fact, you seem to be on something of a spree of adding inappropriate {{talk header}} tabs. Please stop, unless the articles in question are actually subject to intense debate, and if you're going to use templates when you're not certain of the correct use, check the documentation page first. Mogism (talk) 20:52, 1 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yesterday, while searching for something else I found about this article on suggestbot's post on someone's talkpage. But it's talk page was a red link. So, I placed the {{talk page}} template and saved the page. And started finding appropriate banner for assessment. At the same time my connection lost. After sometime the connection is again back but now I forgot about my unfinished task. And yes honestly I haven't read the documentation properly. But creating blank talkpages is inherently disruptive- I generally have no interest to create talk pages of those article which are not created by me. I just saw this article so I was trying to add some talk page banners of appropriate WikiProjects. as by changing the talkpage link from red to blue, it means people think there's something on the talkpage and waste time clicking into it. - No this is an obvious wrong comment. Talk page is also intended for adding appropriate subject related WikiProject banners for assessment and for that you have to turn the talk page red to blue. Anyway, Mogism you may find my above message a bit WP:TL;DR, I'm sorry for that and thank you for your messsage. Jim Carter (talk) 05:31, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
Mogism, I suggest we take this up at Template talk:Talk header, not here. Many users add this template to talk pages even when there is no debate per the instructions ("to attract commentary from inexperienced editors, and/or where there are high levels of debate from everyone"). However, I think this issue needs to be discussed on the talk page and I would encourage you to join me there. Viriditas (talk) 03:54, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Viriditas: I agree, and have started a thread at Template talk:Talk header#Usage, custom and practice. This discussion has been going on for seven years, and it's high time it reached a conclusion. Mogism (talk) 09:18, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey friend. I hope all is well with you and yours. I didn't mean to rush you. I just wanted to be sure we each got our promised tasks done. Hiranyagarbha edit

Hi Jim. Sorry to see the message above and there's no rush to reply to this. While editing I have come across Hiranyagarbha (source of the universe) and a ritual called Hiranyagarbham. I'm surmising that the latter is in honour of the deity. Is that correct? Would it be normal in Indian languages for the addition of an "m" to turn something into a ritual? Cheers,  Philg88 talk 09:45, 9 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey, thanks for the message Phil. Hmm. According to Indian's, Hiranyagarbha means the birth name of Brahma, an Indian Hindu god. Brahma means the Universe. According to some purans (old Indian books) Brahma was born from an egg. It has deep relations with astrophysics, I mean the Big Bang. Just imagine, Indian philosophy has determined how the universe has formed even before science established. Though it was not accurate but they provided some information’s about the Big Bang. "After the Big Bang the universe has formed" says NASA's scientist. And "After the birth of Brahma from the egg the universe has formed" predicted Indian philosophers. Here, egg means the Big Bang and the birth of Brahma means the formation of the universe. Can you understand the relation? I don't know exactly, but Hiranyagarbha is a Sanskrit term or maybe a devanagiri term. Now answering your question, No it is not normal, Hiranyagarbham is a ritual celebrated in the day when Brahma was born. We also have similar deities like Krishna also mentioned as Krsṇa. But there is no ritual with the name Krishnam or Krsnam. Instead we celebrate Krishna Janmastami. Janmastami means "when Krishna was born". There are more than 33 billion deities with different ritual names. This type of rituals was celebrated for more than 5 centuries. So, it is not always normal that every Indian word with "m" is in honor of a deity. I have an excellent book for you. It has everything about Indian philosophy, I can send it to you through courier can you email me your number? It is a must read book and I'm sure you will like it. Btw, did you notice something at the top of this page?? I mean the first thread?? Jim Carter 11:45, 9 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Wow, that's one hell of an answer, thank you! The Hiranyagarbham ritual as I understand it was carried out by rajas to attain the higher status of the kshatriya varna, rather than to celebrate the birth of Brahma. Is that correct? As for the book that you kindly offer, is it in electronic format? I think that the cost of shipment of a physical book from India to the UK would be prohibitive. Adnan Sami Edit.. edit

Hi. I respect your view immensely. However, kindly understand the long standing frustration of Mr. Sami who has been seeing false inputs about his career & life being written in the most bogus fashion by anyone whomsoever. For example, please see the history & you will see that on one hand the discography stated that his 1st album was released in 1990 (incorrect!) and then above it states that he is active from 2006 till present!!! They wipe out more than a decade of a man's hard work. In yet another instance, someone wrote that he learned music from a "Maharaj Kathak"... For the record, "Maharaj Kathkak was a Kathak dancer & could not sing or play a musical instrument thus had nothing to do with "teaching" music!! Also please note that this is a living Legend we are talking about! The record HAS to be set straight by someone who has access to him to get the facts right. A;so, please note that this is a man who shifted to India, considered to be an enemy country of Pakistan & many Pakistanis resent him for it since they feel he shifted so called 'loyalties' by shifting to Mumbai & also, many Indians out of jealousy feel the same way about a Pakistani coming to their home & literally becoming a sensation in their land!! Therefore, many who contribute to his page are driven by personal animosity which we must protect him from as he is just an Artiste who loves his Art and has nothing to do with politics.. That is why, you will see the ridiculous discussion regarding his "Nationality".. In the talk comments, there was a person who claimed that he was in the same boarding house as Mr. Sami at Rugby School... Complete fiction as when Mr. Sami was at Rugby, he was the ONLY Asian in his boarding house!! Everyone is either trying to own him or condemn him at times.. So, I need your help to clean up this mess on behalf of Mr. Sami. I will be most grateful if you can help in this as here we are talking about a man who's contribution to Asian Music has been phenomenal & due to his lack of attention to Wikipedia, his page has been grossly abused. Even the pics I posted were provided to me by Mr. Sami personally thus I posted them for him & yet people just chose to have them deleted! Why?? If HE is in the pic & has asked me to post them, then why should anyone object & have them deleted?? He is in those pics and he has no objections!! Please do understand & help.. Many Thanks.. Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews edit

I Know...
Hello Jim Carter. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).Reply

Can't start thread edit

  • @Hafspajen: Due to the huge size of your talk page, I'm unable to reply on your talk page. I'm using my phone and the connection speed is worst than a snail so I can't load long pages hence starting a thread here. Crisco, Hafs and Xanthy, you guys have raised valid concerns about that image. I will not take the risk. So, friends what you think about this? Jim Carter 19:44, 18 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Sorry. As soon I find some courage to do it will archive. That is good, I say.- Or are there artifacts?? Bit weird on the corner of the ears? Hafspajen (talk) 19:54, 18 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Hafspajen: At first look the ears looked weird but I studied other similar pics and found most of them has same type of ear corners. @Crisco 1492: what is "chromatic abberation" it is a redlink. I have added the image in the article. Jim Carter 06:26, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Remember image has to stay for a week in article BEFORE nominating. But if Crisco thinks it is no good, than it is probably no good. This? Hafspajen (talk) 13:06, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner... edit

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

  • We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
  • In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
  • The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. You are receiving this message because you are listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. DYK review please edit

Hey Jim, please can you review this DYK as it appears to be stuck in the queue. Thanks!  Philg88 talk 09:07, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

@Philg88: Done. Jim Carter 17:12, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks Jim, but you didn't need to do the QPQ because it wasn't a self nomination. Best,  Philg88 talk 18:12, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Jim didn't need to do a QPQ, Phil, but YOU did. 0;-D Self nomination no longer matters; if the nominator (you in this case) has done more than five nominations they need to do a QPQ, per Wikipedia:Did you know#Eligibility criteria. You did a QPQ, so it's all good. Jim was simply noting, as part of his review, that the required QPQ had been done. --MelanieN (talk) 21:48, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ah, MelanieN, my bad. I assumed Jim had done another one. As you say, it's all good. Best,  Philg88 talk 22:44, 20 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome :) Jim Carter 08:35, 21 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Removing AfD template edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with Energy informatics. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. This is an automated message from a bot about this edit, where you removed the deletion template from an article before the deletion discussion was complete. If this message is in error, please report it.—cyberbot I NotifyOnline 11:36, 23 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Come on, ask your operator to fix your bugs. I was the one who added that AfD tag to the article. And you fool, haven't read this. Jim Carter 11:47, 23 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
And you subsequently removed the template when you made an AWB edit. The bot re-added the template and gave you an automated warning. No bugs. No foolish behavior. - NQ (talk) 13:35, 23 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I know... NQ. I was just kidding. We human beings should learn something from this automated bots. I told them "a fool" but still he doesn't reacted. If it was a human then I can bet by now, I would have been blocked for personal attacks. Jim Carter 16:07, 23 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiCup 2015 launch newsletter edit

Round one of the 2015 WikiCup has begun! So far we've had around 80 signups, which close on February 5. If you have not already signed up and want to do so, then you can add your name here. There have been changes to to several of the points scores for various categories, and the addition of Peer Reviews for the first time. These will work in the same manner as Good Article Reviews, and all of the changes are summarised here.

Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round, and one of the new changes this year is that all scores must be claimed within two weeks of an article's promotion or appearance, so don't forget to add them to your submissions pages! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! Figureskatingfan (talk · contribs), Miyagawa (talk · contribs) and Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs)
If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself from the mailing list or alternatively to opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Opted-out of message delivery to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 20:51, 2 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Invitation edit

Hello Jim Carter/Archive 6, you are cordially invited to join the initiative Wikipedia:Deceased Wikipedians. We're a group of editors working to maintain and improve database of those editors who are no longer with us. All of these deceased Wikipedians have changed Wikipedia for the better in some way. Now, it is our turn to pay them tributes and obituaries.

If you know any Wikipedia editor, who is no longer with us, but their names are not included in our list still, please let us know. Visit the project page for more information. Thanks! TitoDutta 23:11, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Repeat AfD nominee edit

You previously voiced an opinion on an AfD discussion on an article. It was subsequently moved to user space and made it to main space. It has been nominated for deletion again: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cantata++ (3rd nomination). If you are interested in weighing-in, it would be helpful to know if you see any improvement in the article and it currently meets WP:GNG. Walter Görlitz (talk) 04:04, 10 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

DYK for Early Nationalists edit

PanydThe muffin is not subtle 06:37, 25 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

I've been digging around and, yep, that article has really piqued my interest. I'm grateful for you creating it. There is much to be done, as you are aware, but I find it hard to believe just how ignorant I was of something that falls slap-bang in the middle of a period in which I have a particular interest. You've raised an entirely valid distinction between "Early Nationalists" as a collective noun and "early nationalists" as a generalised descriptive term, which is how I'd mostly read it previously. My thanks to you and I hope that we can collaborate along the journey. - Sitush (talk) 00:49, 26 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Sitush for the kind words. Since you told about "collaborate" so I thought you might help me expand this. Don't worry about references, I have a huge collection of books and a public library nearby which will help us. Again thank you for the message. Jim Carter (talk) 08:17, 26 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
