Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

Administrator Coaching The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service. This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins. Stressbusters The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome! Note from the editor As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! The last AC meeting (full log) Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct. A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

License tagging for Image:Googleearthdomination.jpg

Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

I understand that Wikipedia is not censored, but it still feels unnecessary. Everyone can tell what word it is by writing it with an asterisk; why not just write it like that and sound more formal and encyclopedic?

I tried to "edit this page" (your page), so to speak, because I wanted to copy the "rectangles" which indicate "Bibliophile" and "Serial comma," etc. But you must have "locked" your User/Homepage ... because I couldn't find the code for these WP images, or whatever you call them. Can you advise me so that I too could improve the appearance of my Homepage??

Also — it just occurred to me — why don't we place these "rectangles" in each page where concept is explained - that way we all could just "Copy" and "Past" them whenever we want to???

Don't you think that is a good idea? Even, perhaps, a Revolutionary idea? It may be a way of spreading literacy more effectively - at least amoung us Wikipedians, no?

Comma & Period Before, or After, a Quotation Mark

I thought you might know about - and be interested in - the rule which says that a Quotation mark comes after the Comma and Period, but before the Question mark and Exclamation point. Can you tell me anything about this rule, and where in Wikipedia, if anywhere, it is to be found? Thanks.

I notice you have this image on your user sub-page User:Jfingers88/Pictures. Unfortunately, due to a licensing issue it must be deleted from Wikipedia, so I've had to remove it. See Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Notre dame basillica delist for an explanation of the issue. Yibir Page

The current page on the yibir is entirley biased and is written by anti-semetic groups in Somaliland who prosecute the Yibrews or the Hebrews of Somaliland. These people are trying to keep silent the oppression the somali hebrew ( Jewish) community ) from the rest of the world. They do not want the world to know about the oppression of the jews in Somaliland. I am a phd researcher who is interested in the yibir subject, but as you can see these anti-semetic groups are editing whatever I have written, and they are malicously writing the wrong information about the yibir groups. Invitation to the African Destubathon

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section.
