Stuart, Florida

Hi Jessejess, I saw that you were having some trouble over at Stuart, Florida. Images are a pretty tricky thing for new editors on Wikipedia: there are a lot of subjective requirements that need consensus from other editors, plus the objective difficulties that come with image rights and licensing. It's a complex area. It is awesome that you want to be involved though: what if you made some suggestions for improvements to the article and we could work together to make those happen? I'd like the article on Stuart FL to stop making it seem like Stuart essentially ended being a viable city after 2005 with the hurricanes, and stop being so hurricane-centric. There's so much more to it and it's still a nice city. Heya Jessejess, I hope you don't mind but I copied your comment at my talk page over to here: it's easier to follow the conversation if we keep it in one place. This is great that you want to improve the Stuart article. Let's get to that.

So the first thing we need is sources. In keeping with the rules around here, the stuff that we add to articles needs to come from reliable sources. Those can be a lot of things, but generally speaking, it means newspapers, books, and magazines.

You tell me: what's the local newspaper for Stuart? Is it the Miami Herald? Would you be able to find some good recent articles about Stuart in the Herald (or whichever paper you tell me is most appropriate) and post the links here? Then you and I can read them and see if there's any material we can incorporate into the Wikipedia article. How's that for a start? A Train^talk 22:47, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

The Stuart News (and even the Palm Beach Post) are more local than the Miami Herald. I'll see what I can find when I can get the time. Thanks. I just hate to see such an abysmal article on the city

Hi Jessejess. You've been editing with this account for only about a month with 28 edits to your credit, whereas John from Idegon has been editing for many years with over 66,000 edits made. So, it's not unreasonable to assume that he is more familiar with how Wikipedia works than you are. I'm not trying make light of your contributions in any way because everybody has to begin somewhere, but Wikipedia has lots of policies and guidelines which we are all expected to do our best to adhere to when we edit. Editing can sometimes be frustrating, but collaborative editing works best when we remain civil, are willing to listen and avoid insulting others.

For what it's worth, image use is one of the trickier aspects of Wikipedia because there are so many different variables to consider. Articles are not intended to be image galleries, so even in cases where the file's copyright licensing is not an issue, article talk page discussion may still be necessary to establish a consensus for adding images to an article. None of the photos you added were deleted, they were only removed from the article. So, if you feel they truly deserve to be there and their use complies with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines, then you should explain why on the article's talk page (Talk:Stuart, Florida#Photos, by the way, seems to be more of a rant than an attempt at constructive discussion) and see what others think.

You will need to establish that the purpose for adding these images is not just to "right some great wrong/set the record straight" because that's not what Wikipedia is really about. The article Stuart, Florida is not for promoting the city in any way, and it's not for showing the reader that things are getting better in the area or giving the reader the "right" impression. That type of thing may be acceptable for other websites, but it's not really acceptable for Wikipedia. So, if you want to add content about how the area (including the riverwalk) has been recovering from some recent storms and this content can be supported by citations to reliable sources, then perhaps the images can be incorporated into the article in support of such content; otherwise, I cannot see a clear encyclopedic need for them or how they are improvement to the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:48, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

And 99% of the 66,000 edits made are reverting other people's additions I bet. And he's a jerk, but apparently noone cares about that here. He just slammed me with numerous personal attacks on his talk page. That is not especially beneficial to the site. And I may be wrong but I don't think the papers usually do stories on restoring riverwalks or anything like that Jessejess (talk) 14:13, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

One of the WP:PILLARs of wikipedia is WP:CIVILITY. Give it a try. Quit Judging, and take a moment to learn how to do things. User:John from Idegon is in fact one of the most helpful editors on Wikipedia, if you talk to him nicely. A Train has been more than helpful.
