Speedy deletion nomination of David Francis (DSG Activist) edit

Hello Jeremy typo,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged David Francis (DSG Activist) for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Hi, thanks for message. I deleted your article because

  • it did not provide adequate independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that he meets the notability guidelines. It is now Wikipedia policy that biographical articles about living people must have independent verifiable references, as defined in the link, or they will be deleted. Sources that are not acceptable include those linked to him, press releases, social media and other sites that can be self-edited, blogs, websites of unknown or non-reliable provenance, and sites that are just reporting what he claims or interviewing him. Most of your references were not independent third-party sources as linked above, but were quoting him or linking to social media.
  • You ought to make it clearer on what basis he's notable. The first thing you mention is that he's a property developer, but I'd guess his notability is more appropriate as a Gay World finalist
  • it was written in a promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic.
  • The text is full of quotes by him, difficult to imagine a less neutral approach, this is an encyclopaedia, not a social media vanity page.
  • there shouldn't be any url links in the article, only in the "References" or "External links" sections. That's particularly the case when they are spam links or links to social media which aren't permitted even in external links.
  • Examples of unsourced claims presented as fact include: aim to celebrate members of, and allies of, the LGBTI community, having their achievements acknowledged in a very public way. They also aim to help effect change... the Awards celebrate— and similar. It's not awful, but it's not neutral either
  • The article was a copyright violation, with extensive quotes from, eg, Glenmedia. Copyrighted text is not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the text is public domain. There are ways to donate copyrighted text to Wikipedia, as described here; please note that simply asserting on the talk page that you are the owner of the copyright, or you have permission to use the text, isn't sufficient. But in any case the copyrighted text is far too self-promoting to be useful for Wikipedia's purposes, so there would not be any point in your jumping through all the hoops that are required. Attributed quotes can be used in Wikipedia as long as they form only a small part of the text. Here you have copied great chunks from non-PD sources, so that's not permitted even if it wasn't so self-serving
  • The two of you refer to "we" and seem to be editing as a team. Note that editing on behalf of an organisation is not permitted, and if you have a conflict of interest when editing this article, you must declare it. In particular, if you work directly or indirectly for an organisation, or otherwise are acting on its behalf, you are very strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly. Regardless, if you are paid directly or indirectly by a company or organisation, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Jeremy typo. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Jeremy typo|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If you are being compensated, please provide the required disclosure. Note that editing with a COI is discouraged, but permitted as long as it is declared. Concealing a COI can lead to a block. Please do not edit further until you respond to this message.

Not related to the deletion, but note that article titles and headings should follow normal capitalisation. Also note that David Francis (DSG Activist) may be seen as promotional in itself, David Francis (activist) would be better

Once you have clarified any COI as requested, I could restore the text without the quotes and the external links to a draft page for improvement, but you might do just as well to start from scratch following this guidance

Hi Jim,

So I guess I'll start with the easy one (or I think the easy one) first. Gabe and I, yes we were working together to create the page, but we are not paid nor related in any way to David Francis. We are simply followers of his on his social media and thought it would be a nice jester of creating the page. We are not part of his organization, nor even friends with him personally, just followers. I had contacted Gabe to see if he would help me as the two of us met via David and had talked about doing something for David to show him our support. I do see now how this could have been taken as us working as part of an organization or being paid by David to create the page but it was not.

As for the links to Davids social media accounts, I did not realize that this was not permitted. Same with the copyrighted info, as we thought it would have been ok since we had cited the news outlets.

I do understand that the way it was written is more of a promotional way. I see how this is an issue. I understand that there would be a lot of work to do to get the page up to standards but with the info you provided, I would like to give it a shot. Or at the very least talk with Gabe and see if maybe somewhere else might be a better fit, but if we go that route, I do not have the page saved, so if possible would like it restored just so I can copy our work and maybe transfer it to a website more fitting.

As for the way the page was written talking about him being a property developer, when we started the page, he was not a finalist in the Mr. Gay World, just an activist with some of the other organizations. But you are completely correct when saying the Mr. Gay World stuff is his current biggest achievement and should be noted higher.

Please let me know where I should go from here, I am new (as I'm sure you can tell lol) and am always up to learning new things, but would really like to not have all the info that I have scoured the internet for, gone.

Thank you for your response, I can't fix what I don't know what I am doing wrong, and you helped a lot!

Best Regards, Jeremy typo (talk) 07:03, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Jeremy, it's only by chance that I came back here and saw the message above. If you want me to see a message other than on my own talk page, you need you start it with a link to user name, User:Jimfbleak and sign it with four tildes ~~~~ before you save it. You could also use the way I pinged Gabe on my talk page, although again signing the post is essential. I'll restore the text to a user sandbox, although I might remove the copyright quotations. I haven't got time just at the moment, but I'll let you know when I have done so, when you should remove the text as soon as possible before it's deleted again. As I said, sourced quotes are OK within reason, but not to that extent, and quoting him is dubious anyway. Thanks for the COI clarification, Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:24, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
Posted here. I've not edited the text at all, so it's important that you copy what you want as soon as possible. When you have done so, let me know and I'll delete the page Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:36, 8 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
