Proposed deletion of List of military families of the United States

The article List of military families of the United States has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

While perhaps a list where multiple family members are all notable for being in the military may be feasible, a list of non notable military people will just be endless, as many families will have had more than one person who served in the US armed services.

Amphitheatrum Johnsonianum

One thing that jumped out at me that is not really a DYK thing: The "Yes, that Custer." While I like it in most non-WP contexts, it's at odds with the plain Wikipedia just-the-facts-ma'am prose that we normally see here. I'd be sorry to see it go, but perhaps you can find some other way of saying, "yeah, that's the same guy who went on to lead a stupid punitive expedition into a trap and got everybody killed." Bibliography of slavery in the United States

Hi, Jengod: Based on your suggestion a couple months ago, I've compiled a bibliography on slavery in the U.S. that I'm all but ready to post. It's currently organized along the same lines as the Bibliography of the United States Constitution, that is, by century. Once the article is up and running, however, I intend to break it down into sections on its various topics, though that presents a number of challenges considering the fact that many works address multiple issues and then the research required for assessing where each would be best placed.

I'm writing first, to let you know that I've followed up on your suggestion, but more importantly because there's a significant overlap in terms of the works I've included on the slave trade and the bibliography you've been working on. I would have addressed this with you before had I been aware of your endeavors, but I only came across your bibliography a few minutes ago...by sheer luck. However, I've tracked down about a thousand books and papers, so I have zero qualms about either paring things back or waiting a few days longer.

Amazing Allreet! Don't worry about my stuff -- I mostly just needed to keep track of it for myself for the sake of List of American slave traders and related items. I think the most logical think would be to merge the two articles. And if it gets out of hand we can always create forks later. (I'm so happy we'll have this!!) Your reply is most congenial. The idea of categorization lends itself to "redirects" on a couple fronts. The Bibliography of the American Civil War is a prime example of this approach. It includes links to about a half dozen individual bibliographies on sub-topics, plus links to articles on other related subjects, usually referencing their bibliographies.

Once I make some headway on the categorization (not easy since it means assessing each work's focus), we should probably do something similar with slavery to keep its "main" bibliography from becoming unwieldy. BTW, I did a quick search of what I've compiled and at least 50 of the titles mention "slave trade". I'll notify you and a couple other editors once I post. The more input the better. Internet Archive status?

I've been categorizing the U.S. Slavery Bibliography the past few days, and it's the "slog" I thought it'd be. That's okay—all in a day's work plus the research has been deepening my knowledge. As part of this, I've been doing "quick reads" of books on the Internet Archive to determine their specific nature, but as of the past hour or so, all of my searches are receiving the "book unavailable" message. I'm afraid they've shut down their lending library as a result of the recent court ruling. If that's the case and the shutdown is permanent, all archive.org links on Wikipedia are going to have to be removed or replaced. That kind of thing also "goes with the territory" for us, though it'd be a huge blow for our research and of course for human knowledge in general. I haven't been able to find any updates on the web addressing this, but if I do, I'll let you know. Allreet (talk) 18:23, 10 September 2023 (UTC)

Hmmm, something of a mystery. I've been using it all day to search without borrowing and tested it periodically to see if borrowing was back. Happily, I was finally able to borrow a book a few minutes ago after 7 hours or so of "borrow not available" messages. Perhaps your "throttle" theory is correct, but you'd think they'd mention such a restriction, as JSTOR does that with its 100 download limit for free accounts.

As for an actual Archive shutdown, unless they find some legal remedy, it may be inevitable. Giving the matter some thought today, I realized it's possible they'll still be able to offer limited previews. If so, we won't be able to borrow, but we may be able to do searches, as I did today and as Google Books allows with their limited previews. The Archive's searches, however, are far better, plus you can get to full pages with some work-arounds, unlike Google with its annoying snippet views. We'll see. And thanks for the reply. I have assessed the article as B class for the Wikiproject military history. I am not a new page reviewer so I am not sure what else needs to be done with respect to a new page review. I have left a message concerning that type of review not being done at the comment on the article talk page and a ping here @Tails Wx: (if it worked). So I assume that Tails Wx will further review as necessary. Interesting article. Not surprising that some of the details in the reports about the incident differed. I'm not too experienced with military history but I find the references (with the exception of the non-online, book sources) cover the information in this article. And after you assess the article you don't need to do anything else related to NPP besides re-review when necessary. I couldn't find anything in Google Books, and the article offers no other indication that this is a case which has been discussed afterwards and is more than just a short burst of (mostly identical) news reports.

Hi Fram I couldn't find it any any secondary sources either and I looked! Could you please nominate this at AFD? I'm fine with seeing it deleted if it doesn't meet requirements (I was hoping that the Governor's reward was something!) but I'd really like it to be put before multiple people. I thought it was notable because it qualified as a slave rebellion and because it was a murder of slave traders, both of which were rare enough to seem remarkable. I'm going to see if I can find a source on the relative rarity of slave rebellion, I swore I just read something but of course I didn't mark it. Hi, I saw your comment at ANI and your machine translation at Olga Celeste was fine. I changed "the Amerikabåten" to "the Amerikabåt" as en means the, but that wasn't important. Google translate seems to be quite good at Swedish to English, possibly because the translations it learned from are good. You asked about policy: WP:MACHINE in Help:Translation says Avoid machine translations in the context of translating from foreign language Wikipedias to en Wikipedia. WP:NONENG in WP:Verifiability, which I had to look up, says When using a machine translation of source material, editors should be reasonably certain that the translation is accurate and the source is appropriate. Editors should not rely upon machine translations of non-English sources in contentious articles or biographies of living people. If needed, ask an editor who can translate it for you, linked to WP:Translators available. (You could also ask at WP:Reference desk/Language.) My other article that used Google Translate was about a dead guy (Max Wenner, who himself spoke 8 languages!) so hopefully it was OK there for a brief while, but I was thrilled when someone came along with Flemish credentials and pitched in. (Goog was having a hard time with the nuances of WWII-era aviation in the Belgian Congo.) Wikipedia makes me emotional sometimes just bc there's so many people doing good work in so many totally distinct ways. This is another example. Baltimore

I drove around the area of Pratt at MLK. MLK pretty much obliterated Fremont in that part of town, and there should a a row of houses there behind Scott St, where Otterbein and Barre used to extend to the north to Fremont, that aren't there anymore. The row houses in that area are not new, but have been fixed up. I would guess they're of 1880s vintage for the most part. There's not much that's relevant to what you're doing. Some tents have reappeared along MLK, but they're on a far smaller scale than two years ago,when they were all over the place and out in the median too. I didn't see anything very favorable for an illustration in the area. Two blocks to the north the entire neighborhood has been flattened, and UMB Medical is expanding west into the vacant blocks from east of MLK. Considering I had to be two blocks away for a work appointment, it wasn't exactly a special trip, but glad to help. I had to go across town afterwards, and the route took me through some of the saddest parts of town - collapsed roofs, empty windows, braced walls, or rowhouses in twos or threes where there used to be a whole block. I nowadays know too much about how the process works to believe that every dot on the map will have an encyclopaedia article. Some of the dots are just outright errors. Reading all of Rennick's map annotations in the Wikipedia:Reliability of GNIS data/Robert M. Rennick Manuscript Collection is a revelation.

Rather, I hope that everyone coming to a place with actual history and geography and geology and whatnot won't be met with "Place is an unincorporated community in thingy county of wossname.^{So says the GNIS.}", and that Wikipedia eventually stops polluting the WWW with geographic falsehoods.

Hi Jengod, thanks for your recent improvements to Red Bank, California, Cold Fork, California, and the other articles I recently AfD'd. I have a question about the image files you added: You got those from the Meriam Library Online Special Collection photo archive, right? How can you tell if those are public domain? I want to use a couple of those for another article I'm working on, and have contacted them for permission, but nowhere on the site does it say anything about copyright status of the images (only that public-domain images can be shared, yada yada). @WeirdNAnnoyed You simply cannot tell and of course it's a huge legal problem for archives as well as stuff like Wikipedia. For things that have no authors, appear to be quite old, are non-controversial, and are small potatoes, I basically presume they have fallen into the public domain by abandonment (copyright not declared, copyright not renewed), and tag as such. I might have to apologize later but also maybe no one cares or has ever cared and it's cool.

It's a judgment call. You have to be bold. But also judicious. In the case of Red Bank, California, I did NOT use the 1960s-color-photo-with-known-authorship when the historical record was served by the probably-1920s–1940s-b&w photo w no known authorship. That said, when things have been posted to places like [Regional Library Digital Archive] I personally presume that they *should* be used -- on a carefully considered case-by-case basis -- for things like Wikipedia articles about Left Armpit, Missouri; even if a lawyer's strict reading of copyright might discourage this.

Most of these archives have a permissions section at the bottom of each item to page that says either "go for it it's free" or has long boilerplate about "this stuff could secretly be in copyright we just don't know you could theoretically get sued and so could we but it seems a damn shame to let these rot in a box for another 45 years until copyright law changes or they definitively enter public domain so here you go YOLO"

last but not least, I would say that a good hardline out date is 1963. Everything after that is default-copyrighted for sure, it's that 1928–1963 window that's the gray area where we can play around *a bit*. OK, hope that helps. I'll sit here and wait for my notifications to light up red and the IP cops to bang on my door. Anyway good luck and have fun. I trust your judgment! Hot Springs in California

Hello Jengod, I have admired your work on California topics for some time now and recently noticed there were a few articles you worked on for settlements/communities/parks in California that have a section on historical hot springs, warm springs or springs in general. Hot springs are an interest of mine, and I've created several articles focusing on them as geological/hydrological phenomena.

Would I be stepping on your toes if I created separate articles on the springs themselves then added a link to the new article in the settlement articles? My only other note is that Gilman Hot Springs, California was nominated for deletion and the result was "merge to Gold Base" but I was just thinking myself that we might want to take it out again since it's developed quite a bit. I have no stake whatsoever in San Juan Hot Springs or Byron Hot Springs since I didn't know they existed until 3 minutes ago. Anyway, go do whatever you see fit, and trust that you have my support. It certainly looks like the ranch that was north of Kern, California in the early 20th century might be the same as the place next to Nickel's golf course, that Nickel Jr reported in a 1998 interview (q.v.) that xe bought off Haggard. But what's the Rio Bravo, California to the west of Bakersfield, then? There is a Southern Pacific railroad there, and it seems to have an oil connection. Is this Solomon Jewett too? It's on a different line but Jewett wasn't involved in just one line. What are the lines? Do we have them? You newspaperers can probably connect the dots and clean up this GNIS mess where I cannot, as these brothers and their business partners made the history books and no doubt made the papers if the 1st AFD discussion is anything to go by. Dairyville

Don't tell Cielquiparle, but the subject lurking behind Dairyville, California — which is a town, not a bloody "unincorporated community" — is Joseph S. Cone, Douglas Cone, the 100,000 acres (40,000 ha) Cone Ranch that was made from Rancho Primer Cañon o Rio de Los Berrendos and more, and a local Tehama history article from the 1960s on "The Chinese Rock Walls of Tehama County" about what Cone and lots of Chinese labourers did on the Cone Ranch. This can also be connected to Los Molinos, California, and via Job Dye and articles in the Red Bluff Daily News to Dye Creek. There is even an explanation that Wikipedia needs of why the farmers around Dairyville grow prunes. We need to boldly rip all of the bloody GNIS out of Dairyville, California and write an article about a town. ☺

So this is one for your list. I still have two forks of Troublesome Creek (North Fork Kentucky River tributary) to do, then see whether I can get a handle on North Fork Kentucky River, and tell Drmies more interesting things about Eastern Kentucky at User talk:Drmies#up the Creeks without an English professor to give xem more interesting things to read than an endless litany of sock-puppet reports. ☺ All because of Trace Fork (AfD discussion) and Whitaker, Kentucky (AfD discussion) and Little Beech, Kentucky (AfD discussion).

Nathan Bedford Forrest

That article has been on my watchlist for a long time, because it's been perennially whitewashed by drive-by editors who tout his repudiation of the KKK as somehow negating everything else about him. As you note, he's a hero of the Lost Cause and a mythology has been built around him. If any Confederate leader was worthy of rehabilitation, it probably would be Longstreet, but there's not the same cult associated with him, probably because he might be considered a sellout. I contribute mostly towards Rubber boom articles, and that has primarily been the biographies of rubber barons. You may be interested on the subject of rubber barons,(One can say robber baron as well.) as they were heavily involved in the South American slave trade. The current rubber baron that I have been researching is Carlos Fitzcarrald, and that could be close to becoming a "good article". It is interesting to note most of South America had "abolished" slavery at the time, however the collection of wild boom often relied on enslaved or exploited indigenous populations. If you would like an opinion on your contributions going forward feel free to leave a message with a link, and I would appreciate any feedback on the rubber boom articles.
