Mary Ann Cotton edit

I reverted your recent edit to this article for two reasons:

1) I believe that the original research tag is unnecessary, as the article has already been tagged as needing reliable sources. By getting such sources any WP:OR problems that exist would automatically be identified and fixed. I also don't think there is any actual original research on the page, as all that info can be found in various sources I have read in the past (though I can't recall specifically which for each point offhand) even if those sources were not listed. I may be wrong, but when sources are tracked down it'll fix itself one way or another.

2) You said you fixed spelling but changed "labourer" to "laborer" and some -ise words to -ize. Those were not errors but proper spelling in England. The article is about events that happened in England, so we use the spelling and grammar rules of that country. English-language Wikipedia doesn't pick a side in the American vs. British spelling debate, we just pick the one that is more appropriate to the particular topic or -- if the subject isn't so clearly defined geographically as this one -- whichever was used when the article was first created. This is explained over at WP:ENGVAR if you'd like more information.

And both of those are very easy mistakes to make (and arguably neither are full-fledged mistakes, just not how typically we do things here), and ones lots of people (including myself) have made here. DreamGuy (talk) 13:35, 28 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah after I started to make the changes to the British spellings which I was picking up because I scan for spelling mistakes when I edit and the British ones come up so I automatically change them, I tried to find out what the official stance was on using British spellings. I didn't find ENGVAR at the time (thanks for the link!) but found Wikipedia:Manual of Style (spelling) which seemed to imply that both were accepted. Since I am using my browser's spell check and it doesn't distinguish between a spelling error being real or just a British spelling and because both were accepted I decided that it would be harmless if I just changed it anyway. I actually noted it on my userpage that I would.
WTR the WP:OR, I thought the section on that page about Mary_Ann_Cotton#How_did_she_get_away_with_so_many_deaths.3F sounding like something that someone had put together on their own however your point about the lack of sources is quite correct and probably a more accurate explanation. It was just such a strange section to see that it through me off. I went through all of Category:Female serial killers so I had a pretty good idea of what kinds of things are usually seen in those articles.
I don't disagree with your revert. Thank you for explaining it. — JediRogue (talk) 16:34, 28 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Errr... Not sure how I ever missed that section before. I don't think that used to be there but I guess I wasn't paying enough attention to know when it got added. That p'articular section could have been tagged as OR (I believe the template is {{OR-section}}') or just plain removed as inappropriate, which I just did.
