The Signpost edit

Hi Jean-Frédéric: thanks heaps for your story on the BnF. I've just copy-edited it. My impression is that it's very very technical. I wonder whether it's possible to bring it down a notch or two—through brief explanations or substitutions of the abbreviated items—so tech-dummies like me can get a sense of the basic technical challenges, achievements, etc. I can go through it again if you want to leave inline suggestions next to mine, or whatever you feel is easiest for you. Tony (talk) 12:15, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the copy-editing : as I am not a native, I’m sure it needed a good prose polishing!
Being so much involved in the project, I do not find it that technical. I mean, it could have been worse: the technical report we are writing at the moment is already 16-pages long ;-). But I do trust your judgement on that.
The thing is, this is really an update on the technical part, which is now finished after five months. The 'political' part is done since April, and there is nothing fancy happening on the Wikisource end: they are, well, proofreading stuff, as usual. (If we hit someday some milestone, I'll get back to the Signpost to see if this can be of interest).
There was really no technical challenge in this final, August part (just some time to spend). Maybe it is why we did that that would be of interest? I am not sure what I can do to make it a better story, so maybe you can improve it with the following?
  • TIFF files : DjVu is the format used by Wikisource. To be proofread, books just have to be in that format. But it appeared to us that it would be good practice to save the original, unaltered files that we were entrusted with, otherwise they would be lost forever. Especially since there really is a huge quality loss in the conversion process.
  • extraction : When we realised we could do it, we though it would be very cool :-p (now that sounds so geeky!). There is no easy way to do that afterwards except for contributors to download the big, multi-page book, use some obscure software to cut the images, etc. Wikisource folks are bent into making the exact same final book, and we also thought that some illustrations could be of interest for all projects. It was meant to do the most of this partnership, for other people (eg WP editors) with different material (images instead of books).
As for "relative interest", I was not sure how to put it. We extracted many stuff like the library stamping of the books or the like (which were not part of the original books). I though this was useless, but a Wikisource friend was all like "Are you kidding? I want this!". So what I am trying to say is that type of illustrations may not sound awesome like portraits of maps, but that they really are interesting for some.
As for the end : as at first we believed we would just upload all the stuff, we did not think of any communication channel. The image files are stacked on my computer and somewhere on the Toolserver. Users can ask us on a per-book basis, and we send the files by e-mail, so it is already "possible". But it would be more convenient to have files freely accessible (that is what we are investigating).
I am not sure I help you that much, but let me know if I can be of more help.

Do you know the WP.fr equivalent page to our featured article candidates page? We are looking for foreign WPians who speak English pretty well and come from similar processes. The idea is to invite them, every so often, to be our judge for Choice of the week. My French is not very good, and it takes a while to get to know who's suitable to ask. If you know, please buzz me by email. Tony (talk) 12:37, 16 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I see also that Reaper Eternal and SMasters have been copy-editing the text (I put in a plea at the Guild of Copy Editors). You might let them know when you've done the rest, because I'll be asleep. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. @Primefac: Was there a change in bot policy in those 9 years that would explain the situation? As the bot never edited article space it was only visible to those that actively followed its pages (even if not in its user space) on purpose. Agathoclea (talk) 07:44, 12 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, there are still some problems with it. On the page Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Images without refnum, it often throughs files out of alphabetical order. I have noticed that many pictures in the Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Images without refnum there are pictures that already have the NRHP template the bot does not remove. Many were given the template by the bot years ago(example File:250_Joachim_Street_Richards_DAR_House_Mobile_AL_01.JPG which was done in 2011 bot added the template) and still shows up in the list the bot creates. We delete it from the list and the bot returns it. It's like the template is invisible. I don't know what is causing that Einbierbitte (talk) 18:50, 4 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Problem edit

Hello Jean-Frédéric, I noticed a misinterpretation of this file in the article on Robespierre on the French Wikipedia. It is clearly dated 7 Nivôse, most likely written in December 1793, perhaps 27 December 1792:

Les dernières notes rédigées par Robespierre, saisies chez lui le jour de son exécution 34 sur 34 - Archives Nationales - AE-II-1419 pièce a et f

On December 26, 1793, Moyse Bayle supported Barère's proposal on suspects, but Thomas-Augustin de Gasparin was already executed. I checked Retronews:

I have no idea who Gérard is, or the young hussard. Maybe you can help me?Taksen (talk) 04:30, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message edit

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:27, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
