A request for the future

I know you're busy, but this actually isn't a request for right now.

I've just finished the major work on Indonesian occupation of East Timor (1975-1999), probably my most important (and exhausting) Wikipedia work to date. Once it's reached GA status, I'll be soliciting peer reviews, so I thought I'd ask early so you can either put it on your schedule or let me find backups. =) Cheers. – Scartol • Tok 01:40, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Okay, it's a GA, and I've submitted it for review at MilHist A-Class review. When you have some time, I'd love to get your take on it. Cheers! – Scartol • Tok 16:48, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Some Help

Can you help me reign in UtherSRG? On the one hand, I guess he means well, but, that is absolutely no excuse for him to disregard Wikipedia rules, no excuse for his awful awful attitude problem, and no excuse for him to act like an egomaniacal hypocrite.--Mr Fink (talk) 15:33, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi, could you look at my hook from the selections on Feb 22 please? Unfortunately one guy prepared two updates yesterday and took them from the two day old section... and quite a few 22s were not chosen until today. Great Scott!

Hi, Jay, thanks for the belated but much appreciated congratulations. Don't think I've forgotten your help during the dark (and cute and fuzzy) days of Knut's FAC; any assistance you need I'll be glad to give! Us librarians really come in handy. I didn't know that Fitz's article was so skimpy, and Hemingway, although a GA, has always been a mess. Bleh. I must say that I'm a bigger fan of Hemingway's work than I am Fitzgerald's, but Ernest and his many-toed cats irk me in a way that Fitz and his crazy wife don't. Funny that you pick two alcoholics as future projects; it's good to know that I'm not the only one drawn to researching eccentrics. :) Speaking of eccentrics, Roger asked me to help with Arthur Rimbaud, but that's probably going to be long term. In the short term I have Stephen Crane and Bob Marshall on my plate. It should be a lucrative spring if I don't get burned out! María (habla conmigo) 19:00, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

  New York City Meetup

Next: Sunday March 16th, Columbia University area
Last: 1/13/2008
This box: view  talk  edit

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, and have salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the last meeting's minutes).

Well also make preparations for our exciting Wikipedia Takes Manhattan event, a free content photography contest for Columbia University students planned for Friday March 28 (about 2 weeks after our meeting).

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

You're also invited to subscribe to the public Wikimedia New York City mailing list, which is a great way to receive timely updates.

RfB

Hi, Jay. Thanks for responding on my talk page; I really appreciate that. I'm not certain as to why there is a focus on the term "mailing list." I don't know of any mailing list. Every once in a while I'm copied on an e-mail sent to a bunch of people. Sometimes the e-mails are from Jay, sometimes they are from others. Who is copied on the e-mails depends on the topic. Florence, Cary, or Mike, for example, often copy OTRS volunteers with admin privs for BLP articles under lockdown. Other than wiki-en-l, accounts-en-l, unblock-en-l, and otrs-en-l and wikiquality, I'm on no wiki-related mailing lists, official or unofficial (and note all the ones I am on are all official - with the only closed ones being unblock and OTRS, because we often get real-life names and addresses and such that should not be public). Maybe I am completely wrong, and I would appreciate being corrected if so, but I believe John was as interested in what Jay does as what I have done, if not more so, and was hoping that I would implicate Jay in some scheme. Jayjg is a very polarizing figure on en-wiki. Some people love him, and some people hate him, and others love to hate him (I know of no one who hates to love him  . He has gotten himself involved in loads of wikidrama, and has become the focus of the enmity of many people. Need I refer to hivemind and wikipedia review? On the one hand, I feel badly that anyone, be it Jay or Kelly Martin (for an example of the other extreme) has to have their wiki-related activities under such scrutiny and enmity. On the other hand, I believe they all had a significant share in bringing it upon themselves. There are plenty of people on wiki who have different viewpoints and upbringings who can still work cordially together, if not amicably. I have co-mentored difficult editors with Fayssal, even though I am an American Jew and he is a Moroccan Muslim. He is one of the people on wiki which I respect the most, notwithstanding the differences in our upbringings. I am very gratified by and appreciative of NSH001's comments on the RfB, which allow me to think that the tightrope I try to walk is recognized by others. Back to that e-mail, my comments on the list specifically were not a defense or accusation of the e-mail—they were an explanation for my actions and why I thought they were appropriate per wiki guideline and policy notwithstanding the immediate cause of my clicking on the page. If you look at my edit history, you will find something like 260+ edits on that page and another 90+ on its talk, most way before the e-mail. Whether that e-mail in and of itself was appropriate--well, it was not the best thing Jay has ever done, I concur. Why I was copied? Likely because I have 350+ edits on that topic, am familiar with it, and have edited it before. But I am no more responsible for Jay's actions than you are for my actions. Furthermore, I am not naïve enough to think that Jay is the only person ever to have contacted another editor about an article or prospective edits via e-mail. I am not certain that is something that we can control, for better or for worse. As I said, in my mind, the only issue that should have been being discussed at my RfB was if *I* could be trusted as a 'crat, and whether or not *I* am subject to influences unwelcomed by the community. I believe I am not, and so do others. If John does not wish to believe so, that is his choice and I respect that. But using my RfB as a vehicle to discuss Jay is no more appropriate than people using Riana's RfB (which I supported) to discuss Kelly Martin. Thank you very much for discussing this, and I'd be glad to talk further if you wish. -- Avi (talk) 04:41, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Peer review idea

Hi, I have made a proposal that no peer review request be archived without some response. To aid in this, there is a new list of PR requests at least one week old that have had no repsonses beyond a semi-automated peer review. This list is at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog.

There are just over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, so I figure if each of these volunteers reviewed just one or two PR requests without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog (as there have been 2 or 3 such unanswered requests a day on average).

If you would be able to help out with a review or two a month from the "no responses" backlog list that would be great (and much appreciated). Please discuss questions, comments, or ideas at the PR talk page and thanks in advance for your help, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:07, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Jackson Davis

An editor has nominated Jackson Davis, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jackson Davis and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:00, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Comment on Aleta's RFA

Hi - I'm not arguing or disagreeing with your statement, but I'm just curious what you mean about the following: I think we need less admins who spend their time in project space. I think such admins are increasingly a net negative to our project. This is more an inquiry about what you think of the admin role here and a request for an expansion of that comment, if you have the time. Thanks much. — Becksguy (talk) 09:08, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for a thoughtful and responsive answer. I try to be polite. I appreciate what you say about experience in writing/editing articles, and I mostly agree with you. This wasn't about Aleta's RFA as you gathered, more about WP in general. I suspect that it's much easier to participate in deletion and other discussion venues (doing what I call drive-by voting, without much in the way of thoughtful and rational arguments) than to do the harder (I think) work of creating and improving articles. Which is what Wikipedia is all about. The housekeeping is just to support creating and improving articles, otherwise it's just office politics. It's like the Army, in that I've heard that there are, more or less, ten support personnel for every actual combat soldier. All necessary, but in support of the basic mission nevertheless. I appreciate your time in responding. — Becksguy (talk) 16:26, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Prom Queen (internet series).png)

Thanks for uploading Image:Prom Queen (internet series).png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Street Children Article

Hi JayHenry, You may remember that back in February you said you might be able to offer some assistance to my re-write of the article on street children. It's gotten a little bit stalled - mixed reviews without any real substantive criticism. One editor remarked, "The edit is unsourced, removes a large amount of information, and is POV. You should not try to redo the edit without further discussion. Your current edit seems more like an essay than an encyclopedia article." Others consider what I have written to be an improvement on the current article. I have also solicited reactions from experts in the field who are not associated with Wikipedia and they have approved of the article I have prepared. I am not averse to changing the article but I really do need some guidance here on a fairly specific level. Where, for instance, is the dread POV rearing its ugly little head? Or is it all POV? My re-write of the current article is in my sandbox: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Almudo/Streetchildren Please help. almudo (talk) 15:54, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Advocate

Hi Shoessss, wanted to respond to your neutral at EyeSerene's RFA. I'm curious, do you also oppose editors who have been through admin coaching? An admin coach will often tell an editor how to answer questions before an editor has a chance to respond. Your objection is noted, and I won't do it again, but I'm curious: Do you feel that I've done something different from admin coaching and that it should therefore be used to punish the candidate? --JayHenry (talk) 01:06, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

First, let me say Hello --JayHenry. Second, I think you will find, if you review my contributions and edit history, that the last thing I try to do is punish the son for the faults of the father. Or you would have not asked that first question. Second, as you pointed out; “…An admin coach will often tell an editor how to answer questions.” That is very different from an administrator coach answering the question. Thirdly, how am I punishing the caudate, I voiced a Neutral position. Unless terminology has changed, to me that means neither support or oppose. Finally, the comment was not so much directed at the candidate, but rather at both Nick and yourself. Which I thought was self-explanatory by the phrasing of the opinion: "...You are doing him/her no favors by your behavior". Hope this helps in why I expressed my opinion. Thanks. ShoesssS Talk 01:30, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, perhaps punishment was too strong a word. But you are declining to support an excellent candidate because of the behaviour of other people over whom the candidate has no control. I'm not actually a friend of EyeSerene (in fact, embarrassingly, my first contact with him will be when I go to his page and Bibliomanic's page to apologize for the damage I've done to the RFA. I have robbed the candidate of your support by my actions, and have taken the focus away from the candidate and made it of myself.)
But tell me, because I honestly don't see this at all: what is the difference with admin coaching? I actually don't see a difference, other than that I provided the answer on the RFA page, whereas an admin coach provides the answer on a different page. Why is the exact same action acceptable on one page and not another? --JayHenry (talk) 01:42, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Hey Guy, first let me say I am not quoting policy – rules – or law, I am only stating my opinion. I view the Rfa process as a way for the community, other than the nominators and people who have worked closely with the candidate, to get to know an individual by reviewing the candidates edit count – talk page – past contributions and most importantly THEIR answers to the questions. Even questions posed by an editor that has joined Wikipedia as recently as an hour ago. When you answer the question, how does that give me insight to the candidate’s position on that particular question or policy? It gives me an idea what you may think, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the process. You are not asking for the position, the candidate is and likewise, I am not looking at you for the position, rather the candidate. Hence, I want the candidate to answer. Does this mean, he cannot ask his coach or an other individual he leans upon for advice? Of course not! In fact, I want individuals in the administrator positions that do rely on gaining census. That way we have an open dissemination of information, rather than one individual’s opinion. Hope this explains my thoughts behind the Neutral opinion. It was not so much an opinion expressed against the candidate or for the candidate, but rather a finger pointed at you. Sorry about that. ShoesssS Talk 02:25, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
Shoessss, I do understand perfectly well that you are pointing the finger at me instead of evaluating the candidate. That's exactly my concern. Would it not be more appropriate to discuss that with me instead of declining to support a candidate who doesn't even know me? --JayHenry (talk) 02:33, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
That is the great things about Wikipedia, opinions are just that, opinions! Consensus is what counts more than just adding up the yes or no opinions. In that consensus is derived by giving weight to an argument based on the merits or faults of any given reasoning, I doubt that my opinion will be considered in the outcome. However, as I said earlier: “…You are doing him/her no favors by your behavior.” Please take this as advice for future use rather than an admonishment, it is not meant that way. Regards. ShoesssS Talk 02:45, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Lament

Well JayHenry, all I see are glasses half empty tonight. I leave a comment on a FAC, which I rarely do, with a question about the content of an article—and above me is a debate about whether JSTOR links should be included in the references, and below me is someone claiming that they must oppose because some of the sources are in Spanish, which of course creates paragraphs of that special breed of FAC debate, where the overly patient attempt to bend over backwards to satisfy arbitrarily narrow readings of policy. FAC motto: "What, we're talking about the inherent merit of an article? I thought this was debate practice!"

And I'm watching a documentary on Walt Whitman (American Experience), and I look at the Good Article on him, which essentially touches on nothing that is interesting about him and his work, as the documentary does (themes, if you will)—but it still manages to have an inline citation for every prosaic sentence of biography, because that's a "good thing" on wikipedia (though I mean no offense to the person who did that much work on the article). Do we know what we're doing here? Why is everything substantial usurped by marginalia? Because we're afraid to deal with the substantial, to admit that most of us don't know what we're dealing with. Just as in real organizations, we invent a bureaucracy to cover this all up, in which we can discuss a million things without reference to desired ends, and in doing so create a meaning in being here that is a supplement to the original reason. The substantial would require a commitment to something other than total subjectivity regarding what's interesting or important; it might require a trivial synthesis to make a cogent whole. It's so bloody uninspired, the new wikipedia (and it's true, I'm imagining an old wikipedia that probably never existed). Congratulations, you're the recipient of an Outriggr rant! –Outriggr § 05:37, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Aaah, that Whitman page is only 34kb, plenty of space to suck up another 30kb of (referenced) prose. Lookee what Jay found and I added to the Hippopotamus article about Pablo Escobar's hippos....now that's colour. I tend to agree about 'colour' enriching drier articles and many of the FAs I've done are embellished with colour...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:46, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your thought. To those who follow all the crazy administrative dramas on wikipedia, my comment above probably seems ironic in the mildness of its complaint. RfA

Why haven't you run yet? You're clearly qualified and understand what's going on. You're active in the sort of places where the tools would probably be helpful. And last I checked, being willing to shout at me when you think I'm wrong isn't a disqualifying factor... If you're lacking a nominator (which I seriously doubt), I would certainly write you a nom. I'm getting a little worried by the slowdown of people standing at RfA, so I thought I'd ask what was causing you not to stand. WjBscribe 16:31, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up

Thanks. Unfortunately, the FA on Evolution of mammals closed before I had a chance to take too much of a look, but there's pretty clearly a lot of work to be done. I'll try to give it a thorough read and offer some suggestions. While I'm thinking of it, there's a paper on Libycosaurus that's currently free here: [3] Its pretty dry stuff, even by taxonomic standards, but it probably won't be free for long (Elsevier changes its free issues pretty frequently), so you might want to grab it if you're interested.--Helioseus (talk) 02:11, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

There's a new book out that should have a good overview of anthracotheres: [4] I haven't picked up a copy myself yet, but from the one chapter I've seen, it seems to give readable, up to date overviews of the characteristics, evolution, and phylogeny of each family. User:Apokryltaros does a thankless job (he seems to get more than his fair share of grief). His reconstructions are usually pretty good, although my favorite paleo mammal reconstruction has got to be the one at Arctocyon. --Helioseus (talk) 19:10, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Evolution of mammals

Hi, you raised one point in the FA review that was archived before I noticed it. You were right that, if we calcualte the dates from the normal start and end-dates of the Permian and Jurassic, the evolution of mammals took over 90M years (in fact I make it closer to 100M). I wan't using the dates strictly in the article intro, just as a rough frame of reference. The real answer depends very much on which animals you take as the start and end. I took Hadrodocium as the end (195M years ago, so I'll edit the intro to say "early Jurassic" for now): it doesn't fit the newer definition of "mammal" (last common ancestor of monotremes and other modern mammals) but is the earliest known fossil that meets the traditional jaw-ear criterion without being disqualified as obviously not an ancestor for other reasons (multituberculates would have to be disqualified for that reason, but fortunately the earliest known multis are later than Hadrodocium). So picking an end-point is not easy.

Choosing a start-point is no easier: the 1st therapsid (early in the mid-Permian)? the 1st pelycosaur (a bit earlier)? the 1st amniote (conjectural)? It doesn't help that Permian stratigraphy and dating seem to be a bit of a mess (see Therapsida: Overview).

If you have any suggestions on how to clarify this situation, I'd be glad to see them at Talk:Evolution of mammals   Philcha (talk) 14:26, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Zelda Fitzgerald

Hi, I was cleaning up the GA noms with WP:AWB, and noticed this odd spelling in Zelda Fitzgerald: "...it was not reciprocal as it often is in Smarriages....". Is "Smarriages" a typo, or some sort of neologism of Fitzgerald's? if it is the latter, perhaps you should put a <!-- comment --> after it to let other editors know. later! Ling.Nut (talk) 08:26, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Or a [sic] to let readers know. I made the same note in my review, which is now finished. I also responded to some points (and fixed some things) in the GA review. Cheers! – Scartol • Tok 17:55, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
No worries on the review; I am eager to move it to FAC, but I don't want to add stress to anyone's life over something which is sure to happen eventually. I'm trying to just let the Way do Its thing. Speaking of Fitzgerald, have you ever read Nonconformity by Nelson Algren? I consider it the best book ever written about writing, particularly about the writer's responsibilities.
I know what you mean about getting things up to high standards and the anxiety which comes with presenting one's work to an esteemed reviewer. I was extremely fortunate to have her review Balzac back when (and it helped me link up with some other really superb editors as well, especially that guy who reminded me I lived near a really great library). Cheers! – Scartol • Tok 11:43, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Not supporting my hypothetical RfA

I wouldn't support it either! :) Especially considering it will never happen. I've never expressed the slightest interest in being an administrator. Even before I became disillusioned with the project, I had made it clear that wasn't one of my aims. So, rest assured, you won't have to oppose me at RfA anytime soon. ;) BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 11:48, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

  • She was part of the reason I vanished in the first place. I watchlisted her empty RfA page, because she seemed like the type who would try for the tools at some point (the fake politeness especially pointed to this). When the light went on for the first RfA, I opposed her, and when it failed, I watchlisted the empty second one, especially given her very odd "closing statement." When it lit up, I opposed again. What's the problem with that? I'm not "embittered", I just consider her one of the least-qualified admin candidates (of those who actually have a chance to pass) that I've ever seen. BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 18:27, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
    • Honestly, Jay, I don't consider it "grudge holding" at all. I think of it as considering her wildly unfit to use the tools responsibly, based upon my past experiences with her. Check the restored history of this account. I don't normally oppose ANY decently-qualified admin candidate. I've been a "no big deal" guy for most of my participation at RfA. GG just happens to be a candidate that I think would be very ill-equipped to wield the tools. BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 18:35, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
    • Oh, and I didn't "quit" because of her, I "vanished" partly because of her. It was mostly because of some RL concerns regarding the fact that I had used my real name as my account name. BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 18:38, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
      • Oh, I didn't mean to give the impression that I was upset with you. I'm not. I was simply perplexed at how you were viewing my oppose, that's all. Thanks for the time you've taken to rationally discuss this, as opposed to others involved at this RfA. BobTheTomato (MrWhich) (talk) 18:42, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:17, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks so much - just to make sure, do you want me to remind you on the 1st and 16th (not sure from your note). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:56, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for adding the photo. I meant to release both photos, of course. I apologize. I clicked the submit button too quickly. I went back immediately and thought that I had made it all right. Can you fix that or should I start over?

These two hippos don't really 'belong' in Kenya. They were handed over to my friend Iris at Mt. Kenya Wildlife Conservancy by the Kenyan government when they were in very poor health. Now that Iris has restored their health, the government would like them back and she has, so far, successfully avoided doing so. Originally, they were a gift from some other African president.

These are hardly the most unlikely residents at Mt. Kenya. She also has a lot of llamas!

I'm glad that you appreciate my photos! Here are two more, which I took myself of giraffes. It seems to me that there may ought to be a good place for them to appear at Wikipedia?

I hope to make entries for The Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, William Holden Wildlife Foundation, and the Mt. Kenya Safari Club, but so far have not quite got up the nerve for such an undertaking.

Well done on Zelda

Congratulations on getting Zelda through FAC - it's a great article. Can you look at the "References" section? I don't think the three web sources appear as they should. I'd fix them myself if I knew how, but I'm useless at that sort of thing. Best wishes. Brianboulton (talk) 00:20, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Just to say that you don't owe me anything - its a pleasure to review well-written articles, and I'm delighted you are considering Tender is the Night—though I hope you won't use quite so many mdashes as FSF. Chuck, revisited

"roughly ten percent of the things I say are Chuck Klosterman references"... the funny part is that that statement itself sounds like something Chuck himself would say, of course with a different subject. My RFB

Thank you for your comments in my RFB. Since it was only at 64%, it was a shoo-in to be unsuccessful, so I withdrew. I didn't want it to run until its scheduled close time because my intent in standing for RFB was to help the bureaucrats with their workload, not give them one more RfX to close. Through the course of my RFB, I received some very valuable feedback, some of it was contradictary, but other points were well agreed upon. I have ceased my admin coaching for now to give me time to revamp my method. I don't want to give up coaching completely, but I'm going to find a different angle from which to approach it. As for my RFA Standards, I am going to do some deep intraspection. I wrote those standards six months ago and I will slowly retool them. This will take some time for me to really dig down and express what I want in an admin candidate. If, after some serious time of deep thought, I don't find anything to change in them, I'll leave them the way they are. I'm not going to change them just because of some community disagreement as to what they should be. Will I stand for RFB again in the future? I don't know. Perhaps some time down the road, when my tenure as an administrator is greater than one year, if there is a pressing need for more active bureaucrats, maybe. If there no pressing need, then maybe not. Useight (talk) 03:15, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

The Exhausted Necessity

"Grueling" doesn't cover it! =) I realized as soon as I got done with the bio that I never should have picked someone with so much technical data to summarize. The article would be stuck at Start Class without WillowW. I just hated feeling so helpless while the questions and suggestions piled up. Every time it was like: "Here ya go, W. Lemme know when you finish fixing these!" I owe her big time – I feel like a bit of a fraud even putting the FA star atop my userpage. (Not that I won't do it, heh.) Thanks as always for your support and the kind feedback. Cheers! – Scartol • Tok 20:20, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

Whassup, Napoleon?

What a lovely set of crowns you've got there, buddy. =) I wonder if you've got a moment for a peer review of another Balzac article, La Peau de chagrin? There's also a dispute about which way to order the article, which would benefit from your opinion.

Capsule summary of the dispute: I feel that the structure I've used for Louis and Le Père Goriot (Background, Plot, Style, Themes, Reception) is best; user Doom feels the novel itself should be the focus for the first parts of the article (not background info on Balzac's life).

S/he changed the lead, with the goal of rearranging the entire article; I'm obviously opposed to this. I haven't been edit-warring about it, but we haven't been able to sort it out on the talk page. Any comments you have to offer would be appreciated. Cheers and congrats on the new triple-crown! – Scartol • Tok 12:53, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

tishit begemota

See if I can get this right: "kak tezhelo eta robota, teshit begemota, ot belota."

Marschak(?)

The tulip mania article falls in that category. There are at least 2.5 povs on this:

1. McKay was a marvelous writer and

1a) his facts are more or less correct.

2. Something fairly minor happened, more or less like a barroom game, but there might have been some spillover to the real economy.

2a) the game was something like an option that was reasonably priced.

I do have a POV here, but I think it is the scientific (or reasonably skeptical historical) viewpoint. 1. is correct, 1a. is totally unproven (and probably false) 2. is the best description, and 2a. is perhaps correct but is ultimately distracting from the main point 2.

There is controversy over this in the economic community. With "bubbleology" all the rage some otherwise astute economists quite uncritically cite McKay, but nobody (repeat nobody) has ever checked out his reported "facts." Among those who do some fact checking, e.g. Garber and Goldfarb(?), 2 is the standard pov.

I've been thinking for a long time to get more from Garber's book in there, but it'll take some time. From what I can tell Garber is the best source on this.

One way to check out this view is to look at the Tulipomania book by Mike Dash. Dash is a pretty well qualified (DPhil Oxon?) historian who popularizes a lot of stuff including 1600s Dutch stuff. His book simply repeats McKay, with a few frivolous details thrown in. I found the book quite frustrating because my question was always "How does he know this stuff?" Checking the footnotes, he quite clearly says that he doesn't know this stuff "the history is obscure." If a modern popularizer can only repeat McKay and then give himself a huge out in the footnotes that really means "I don't believe any of this," then how can we believe what's been written?

By the way, please read the OTHER chapters in McKay. They are fun "What a god-awful hat!" and gives you a sense of where he is coming from. I'll try to get some real Garber in the article. The split between popular view and "dissenting view" (but maybe "standard view" now) I think is a good part of the article.

Smallbones (talk) 16:49, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

Aha. I have read the Dash book, great read and highly entertaining...oh god another article to the 'to-do' list (groan..) Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:13, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Salinger

Hey, Jay, how goes it? Hope you had a good holiday. Well, at least better than mine; I apparently need to invest in 80 SPF. :)

Salinger is looking great, and I think an FA push is definitely in its near future, but I agree that the themes need expanded. First of all, I would separate the style details from the thematic. Salinger's style(s) is sufficiently explained, I feel, but the common themes need to be better described and in more detail. This sentence is key: Recurring themes in Salinger's stories also connect to the ideas of innocence and adolescence, including the "corrupting influence of Hollywood and the world at large", the disconnect between teenagers and "phony" adults, and the perceptive, precocious intelligence of children. What else can be said about each? It would be great if subsections on each of these important themes could be developed. For example, the struggle through adolescence to adulthood as a theme: what role does it play in various works and what critical insight is there about it, specifically? It's like pulling teeth, but explicit examples from the works would help.

I took a quick look at some sources at Netlibrary and found Harold Bloom's J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, which has a section dedicated to thematic and structural analysis, which may be of help. That's where I got my above example from, in fact. If you'd like more suggestions for sources, just let me know and I'll put my reference librarian game face on. There isn't much, but there is some stuff out there. Homeownership is stressful and tiresome and terrifying... I highly recommend it! The latter certainly comes into play when you have drunken, pyromaniac neighbors whose favorite lines seem to be "Here, hold my beer" and "Everyone, watch this!" What with Billy, your pygmy hippo, already listed and possible future individual animal articles to come, do you think there should be a separate category at WP:GA for them? See where you say "I appreciate that you seem to be less avidly pursuing the tactic of knocking conversations off course by the sheer volume of your comments"

That is couched to appear as a compliment, but actually it's an attack based on a false and extremely damaging claim.

In other words, it's a personal attack.

Don't do that. --Jenny 16:37, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

"pursuing the tactic" is obviously not a reference to a section, but a description of user conduct as motivated behavior, and here the motive is identified as "knocking conversations off course by the sheer volume of your comments". That's a personal attack. --Jenny 09:47, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Red Badge image

Hey, thanks! I know nothing about copyright/public domain/evil, image tagging bots, so I appreciate the help. Speaking of badges, I'm currently toiling away at Stevie Crane. I began writing it back in, oh, I don't know... December. But now I'm busting my butt trying to hammer it out before the fall semester begins. Care to place your odds? Will she make it in time? Will the Wikipedia gods smile upon her and keep vandals at bay? Will she end up having a nervous breakdown and hallucinate that she's Henry Fleming? A serious prophet upon predicting a flood should be the first man to climb a tree. Ahhh! María (habla conmigo) 02:20, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeesh. If I were in your shoes, I probably wouldn't appreciate Red Badge or its allussions after that, either. Someone should have pointed out to her that Crane was a disillusioned son of a minister and that there's little chance of any intended religious winks and nods in his work. :) I went through a naturalist period in high school after reading To Build a Fire, so Crane, London, Conrad... they've always been a few of my favorites. Tulips, on the other hand, are prettier and far less distressing than freezing to death or dying of malaria! I only read the lead but it sounds fascinating. Distractions are good. Hi Jay. I have responded to your concerns. Please check. Thank you. --Efe (talk) 09:43, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I consider the swamp drained.

JH,

Very nice work on Tulipomania, I'd consider taking it to a FA. I think all the sublties and fine points come through nicely. I'll put some very minor criticisms on the talk page.

One potential inclusion would be Michael Lewis's (editor) new book, the "Real Price of Everything" which is just a collection of econ classics, Adam Smith, Malthus, Riccardo, Veblen, Keynes, and - you guessed it - Mackay! i.e. this incident has entered into the pantheon of economic thought.

Nevertheless, though I think the book will be a perrienal moneymaker, it has some problems. A NYTimes review strongly suggests that Lewis didn't really edit it, but that it came to him pre-packaged - just write some short intros and sign your name on the check! And, in the bookstore I had some time to skim his intro to tulipomania - just awful. I like his work a lot, but this looked as if he wrote it in one night between 1 and 5 am.

Again, fantastic work.

Michael Jackson pictures

I have responded to the main picture problem, I am at a serious loss as to how we managed to crop a picture that isn't visable on commons. Anyway, I have gone and found the original picture on commons (they were all taken by the same family you probably guessed.) The author has given away the rights to it so it is just a case of uploading it and acknowledging that it has that crop. Could you help with this, I do not understand picture policy. I don't know how to fix that star issue either and Giggy always seems to busy to help at the moment. — Realist2 (Speak) 00:33, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Thank you man, fingers crossed, I really thing this article stands a change at FA, lol, hell I wish we had the Super Bowl pick too, I don't care what people say about the guy, when they see that super bowl performance they quickly shut up. Thank you for fixing those problems (tomorrow :-)). Aside all that, would it be possible to upload more of those mans pictures of MJ? He has a few others that I might consider using on other articles and no1 ever helps me with pictures :-( — Realist2 (Speak) 00:40, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Taking a closer look at that guys pictures, the only further one that would interest me would be this one. I'm almost certain that I can see patches of vitiligo on his face. Is there a way you could enlarge and make a close up of his face, fingers crossed if it is we can add it to the physical appearance section. Looks like he wasn't wearing full make up there. — Realist2 (Speak) 01:02, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Just so you know I raised a concern over the audio samples at the FAC - might be something to look for in future if you're taking the plunge of image review (if you burn out because of this... well... just don't, OK!!!!). —Giggy 07:16, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

I think I forgot to include a :-) when making the above comment. Anyway I replied and yes, you are correct in terms of NFCC. (By the way, the "discuss nicely" image up top of this page is now a redlink...) —Giggy 08:22, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
I have left a question at the MJ FA review. Cheers. — Realist2 (Speak) 13:25, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for sorting out those pictures for me, hopefully we can strike it as resolved soon. I have just uploaded this picture successfully. Would it be possible for you to make a close up crop of Jackson's face, without being too intrusive. Obviously Jackson is very sensitive about his appearance and it should only be done in good taste, but it is important to the article that people see. — Realist2 (Speak) 19:57, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
OK, Giggy has agreed the rational's are OK now, any chance you could strike that stuff off as resolved? The review is getting huge and I'm losing my way in it all. — Realist2 (Speak) 20:04, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Michael Jackson is now a featured article, thank you for your assistance. — Realist2 (Speak) 20:57, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Apology

... accepted. Usually I would apologize also in a heated exchange situation, except that you are one of the few Wikipedia editors whose edits I am familiar with and when I saw the name attached to your answer it really pissed me off: because I know that you are a very careful editor. Wikipedia can't improve if people are not allowed to review and fine tune the process, and it seems that people are not (and about this point, I'm not talking about you). --Blechnic (talk)
