Hello, I'm Eumat114 (formerly The Lord of Math). Thank you for your contributions so far. I wanted to let you know that your recent contributions made you surpass me in terms of edit count. Please note that edit count is a useless statistic and what makes you a good editor is not your 5,213 edits. Repeated instances of mass editing may cause you to become an admin. List of Parliaments of England edit

Hello JavaHurricane

I am new to adding to Wilipedia and would much appreciate your advice.

Today you deleted my addition to the article List of Parliaments of England.

I added that the October 1308 Parliament was held at Westminster. I did not add a footnote as I thought this would have muddled up existing footnotes and I did not think the addition was contentious. The information was taken from page 152 of Seymour Phillips Edward II 2011.

Could you please let me know where I went wrong and how I should go about adding to Wiki in the future?

Best wishes

Terence

Terence1284 (talk) 13:17, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Terence1284, sure! The problem was that you did not add a reliable source. To add it, simply click on a chain button in the toolbar. Use the "manual" tab and select a book. Then add the reference! Click on "Insert" once you are done, and save. The software will organize the references. JavaHurricane 13:28, 15 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dear JavaHurricane, thank you for volunteering as a host at the Teahouse. Wikipedia is a community of people working together to make knowledge free. You are an important part of that effort! By joining as a Host, and by following our expectations, you are helping new users get a hold of the ropes here at Wikipedia, and helping experienced users who just have a question about how something works. We appreciate your willingness to help!

Here are some links you may find helpful as a Host:

Tony Zosherafatain edit

I marked the page you reviewed as part of AfC as written like an advertisement. The article in my opinion serves mainly to promote the subject. Don't know if you missed this as part of the AfC process or you just thought it would eventually be tagged as part of NPP anyway. Sam-2727 (talk) 17:40, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/په اقتصاد کې پانګونه او سرمایه edit

Hi I just wanted to let you know that someone has created Arabic language articles here and instead of Afd you could have straight away nominated this article to be speedily deleted (CSD). I shall nominate the article to be deleted via CSD which you Afded. There is no point in having a discussion about a subject which is in foreign language that most of them do not understand. Abishe (talk) 08:52, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Abishe, is there a CSD criteria applicable? JavaHurricane 09:09, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Draft:Nikolai Udianskyi edit

Hi, JavaHurricane

For Draft:Nikolai Udianskyi there is significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. They are mentioned in "External links" section

Alas, they are in Russian:

  • "Удянский Николай — досьє" (in Russian). Левый берег. Retrieved 2020-04-16.

And in Ukrainian:

Please let me know at least one sentence in the draft article, which appears to read more like an advertisement and is not written from a neutral point of view?

Please let me know any from 14 diffetent references that are not independent or reliable?

I hope that after careful cosideration you will change your mind. --Perohanych (talk) 12:34, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Perohanych, the article seems to have been improved, but someone has tagged it for speedy deletion as a copyright violation. JavaHurricane 13:53, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I have contested the speedy deletion, and hope that my arguments are sufficient. --Perohanych (talk) 19:49, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Good morning! The the article has not been tagged for speedy deletion as a copyright violation anymore! --Perohanych (talk) 09:43, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Perohanych, good to hear! Article looks good now. There were some promotional things there on the page when I reviewed, but it seems all clear now. JavaHurricane 09:44, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Question from ViSzKe (09:10, 21 November 2023) edit

Hi! I want to add a portrait of Johan Kero to the Wikipedia page that I'm creating. I found a nice picture on the instititute's website (https://www.irf.se/sv/news/2022/11/23/irf-forskaren-johan-kero-i-vetenskapsradions-avsnitt-sa-bevakas-meteoritnedslag-i-sverige/) but that is obviously not my own work. Where do I see if it's copyrighted or not? Sorry if I'm completely stupid. --ViSzKe (talk) 09:10, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@ViSzKe: when in doubt, assume copyright with all rights reserved - that is my thumb rule. In general, I would think that the copyright policy of the website will be mentioned in the footer of the webpages or on a dedicated page on the site. JavaHurricane 18:07, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi! Thanks for sharing your thumb rule.
I can't find any copyright message on the website. Should I publish the page without a picture and hope someone else can add one, or is there some sort of unwritten rule in the community that every page should have pictures? ViSzKe (talk) 18:44, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
@ViSzKe:, no such rule, at least as far as I'm aware; and I regularly see long-standing articles without images as well. I'd advise you to publish without a picture. JavaHurricane 19:16, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Question from YorkDr (16:20, 3 December 2023) edit

Hiya! I recently made a new account, as I wanted to to change my username. As it appears I cannot create Wikipedia pages, and I think it’s because this account is new. And it will only let me create drafts. Is there a way you could allow me to create Wikipedia pages? --YorkDr (talk) 16:20, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

@YorkDr: there was no need for you to create a new account if you wanted a username change; you could have requested one via here. Oh well. Either ways, direct creation of articles is forbidden for accounts that are not autoconfirmed as per the results of this discussion, so you should be able to create articles once your account is four days old and you have at least ten edits. I would advise against directly creating pages, though: article creation is among the hardest tasks for a newcomer on the project, and it is best to gain experience in other facets of the project and understanding Wikipedia's rules before going for article creation. Nonetheless, if you still wish to create an article, I would advise you to read this guide on writing your first article and then using the Article Wizard. JavaHurricane 03:46, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GeorgeSpelvin9: this is relevant to your query as well, I suppose. JavaHurricane 03:47, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi. It says my account is 4 days old now, but I still cannot create articles. I do have over 10 edits as well YorkDr (talk) 08:38, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
This doesn't make sense. Can you tell me what error you get when you try to create a new article, YorkDr? JavaHurricane 09:26, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh it just tells me I can only create a draft, I don’t get an error. YorkDr (talk) 09:27, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@YorkDr: Can you post the exact wording that you get? JavaHurricane 09:48, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
The article that you're looking for doesn't exist.
You can create it as a draft, but...
Before you create an article, you should read this guide.
New to Wikipedia? See the contributing to Wikipediapage for everything you need to know to get started.
Need interactive help? You can ask questions at the Teahouse, help desk or through live chat. YorkDr (talk) 12:47, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@YorkDr: could you tell me which page you're trying to edit? I can think of a way to bypass this message, but I need to see if the page has been protected from creation. JavaHurricane 13:06, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I’m trying to create an article for Princess Theodora of Hesse-Darmstadt, but it says I can only create a draft as I have shown you. Is there a solution to why I cannot create articles? YorkDr (talk) 13:59, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@YorkDr: Try starting the page using this link. JavaHurricane 14:28, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
It didn’t work, it still said the same thing. On my other account it would let me create articles. Idk what’s going on YorkDr (talk) 14:29, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@YorkDr: Ah, I now see the issue. Autoconfirmed rights as given automatically, and the software determines the time from creation right down to the second. Per your account details, your account was created at 16:59 UTC on 2 December, so your account is not four days old yet - it will be automatically granted autoconfirmed rights at 16:59 UTC today... or in about two and a half hours from now. You should be able to create new articles thereafter. I wonder how I missed checking this point.
Also, I think you should disclose your old account on your userpage to comply with the policy on multiple accounts and sock puppetry. JavaHurricane 14:35, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Oh it’s ok, I have the other account sorted as it got banned anyway because I wanted to change my username, this one isn’t banned though. YorkDr (talk) 14:39, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
And thanks for the help YorkDr (talk) 14:40, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@YorkDr: what do you mean by "banned"? And what is the username of the old account? The sockpuppetry policy requires that it be disclosed unless there are privacy concerns involved (what should be done in this case is detailed in the policy). JavaHurricane 14:41, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I got banned on there because I created a new account, two of the admins decided to ban that account and told me to use this account instead, idk if they’ve disclosed it but they told me not to go on it of which I haven’t done so. It don’t really want to say the username because it is my personal real name but if you really need me to say it I will, (I wanted to change it cause it felt personal) and I looked on the Wikipedia page to see if I could change my username before I created this one, it said you can either request a change in username or create a new account and it said on their that creating a new account would be faster. YorkDr (talk) 14:49, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
@YorkDr: Makes sense; I saw your user talk page history, and things seem good, since a couple of checkusers know about your old account. Nonetheless, to be on the safer side of things, I think you should note on your user page that you formerly edited under another account that you have abandoned for privacy reasons. No need to name it if you are uncomfortable about it. JavaHurricane 14:56, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Deletion chats edit

May I ask when someone in a deletion chat someone says “Redirect” what happens to the page? Azarctic (talk) 01:10, 1 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Azarctic: a !vote (as a deletion discussion is not a vote) for redirecting the page being discussed means that the commentor feels that there is a topic with an existing article to which the article being discussed can be redirected, as an alternative to outright deletion of the page. For instance, this can be done if the article being discussed is about a topic which is not notable by itself to get its own article, but is discussed in some depth in the article of some other topic. @Azarctic: to link to a Wikidata page, simply write [[d:<Title of the page on Wikidata>]]. Note the "d:" that precedes the page title in the link. Alternatively, you can use the template {{Wikidata entity link}} for this job.
Also, anyone can nominate a page for deletion. See the page on deletion processes for details. JavaHurricane 09:04, 5 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Martinrandall: as it turns out, I had mentioned the guidelines for conflict-of-interest editing in the welcome message I had left on your talk page three years back. How do I create a Wikipedia pages? --Aadil18 (talk) 05:49, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Aadil18: generally, new editors are discouraged from getting into article-writing straightaway, due to the complex web of policies about content and articles on Wikipedia. Nonetheless, if you want to write an article, I recommend you to go through this guide on writing your first article, this guide on referencing, and then using the Article Wizard. Can you run a CU on this user, I noticed this 1 person created a user account to take this US observance of an article, then it got reverted. Then it appears that user created another account "socketpuppet" to further their point. They only made that 1 edit and that was it. The usernames are very similar as well. Can you do a CU and help with getting the info back regarding the observance this user seems to have animus towards? I went through the revision history of the Wagyu article and noted this. Here are the users with the contribution showing:

Hi, I noticed you've twice removed a discussion that you believe to be from a banned user, apparently Squared.Circle.Boxing, but the discussion you removed was actually started by 103.167.254.140 on January 19. It was Squared.Circle.Boxing who originally removed this discussion by saying "Blah blah" and when they removed it the second time, they said "Suggest a way to improve the article or go and find a forum to post on." Am I missing something here? Stefen Towers among the rest! GabGruntwerk 01:17, 5 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@StefenTower: I was indeed reverting the IP's nonsense. The IPs are proxies used by the globally banned user WP:LTA/GRP. He has been disrupting the project since 2006 with his nonsensical conspiracy theories and has engaged in some of the most vile and disgusting harassment you'll find on Wikipedia. Interacting with this user can open you up to this abuse, so please don't reply to his posts. Simply revert them and, if the post is fresh - a couple of hours old or newer - report the IP to AIV. Question from Almaima (13:54, 25 February 2024) edit

Hi Airship, thank you for taking me on. I am a scientist and wiki fan. Sometimes I see small mistakes, mostly just outdated information. It has been bugging me for a while. I just want to have the option to correct those mistakes. Coming from scientific writing I am used to providing citations for every piece of information and every premise provided. When writing a review for example, you can cite articles behind paywalls. I have seen this done on wiki as well. Is there something I need to keep in mind when citing for example a specific nature or science paper? Thank you. --Almaima (talk) 13:54, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Almaima: hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Generally, you should avoid citing primary sources - as Wikipedia is a tertiary source, we generally report what reliable secondary sources have to say. We have a a great guide on referencing for newcomers to Wikipedia which goes in depth about this. JavaHurricane 17:51, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from FaterPepper (21:16, 2 March 2024) edit

I am confused about adding reliable sources to articles. How do I make sure a citation I add is "reliable"? --FaterPepper (talk) 21:16, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@FaterPepper: the relevant policy is Wikpedia:Reliable sources, which provides some rubrics to determine the reliability of a source. Simply put, Wikipedia policy states that we should use such sources that have a high standard of fact-checking and don't report speculation as fact or print out paid or fake news. Additional constraints apply as well: for instance we should cite scientific articles from high-quality journals in articles on science... I guess you get the idea. Now, what is considered to be a "reliable source" is hard to exactly quantify, and standards of rigour vary from editor to editor. That said, this page provides a list of frequently used sources that the Wikipedia editor community has identified as being generally reliable, so this is a good place to start. RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I edit

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024 edit

Hello JavaHurricane,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

You declined my article even though I provided sources. Can you please explain what aspects of my article led to its rejection? 1.145.23.203 (talk) 10:59, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@1.145.23.203: you've not properly sourced your text. Whenever you write some information in an article, the reference for that information should be added immediately after that information. For instance, if I were writing the article Example page, I would add my reference to the website, say example.com, as follows:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat.[1]

As I previously said on the draft, going through this handy and excellent guide on referencing will be very useful for you. JavaHurricane 11:36, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mafika78: I would have answered this query in detail, but at the moment I'm too busy to do so. I recommend asking at the Teahouse, a location specifically meant for answering questions from new users. The reason basically has to do with Wikipedia's copyright policy - Wikipedia is published under a free license, and therefore we can only hosts files, such as images, which are compatible with Wikipedia's license. There is, of course, a lot more to be said about this, which is why I think you would get a better analysis at the Teahouse, as time constraints prevent me from going into detail.
