I did finally

watch Bridge over the River Kwai at your suggestion. I must say I am glad I finally did. But although Lean (Brief Encounter, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago) is one of my favourite directors, I did not care for the theme of the movie, which was far too cynical, or Holden's character. Only the utter humiliation of the Japanese commander and the last-second redemption of Guinness's character saved the film. I don't much mind conflicted characters, but Holden was an unmitigated arse. (Will you believe wikipedia's spell checker finds "arse" misspelt?!?!) Assuming I live long enough, I'll probably watch it with my niebles in a decade or so. Again, my thanks. μηδείς (talk) 04:26, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Oh, he was an arse alright. Holden was good at playing arses; I assume you've seen his Oscar-winning performance in Stalag 17. But I'd watch 'Kwai' again tomorrow if the opportunity presented itself. Curiously, although Alec Guinness is also one of my all-time favourites, his Oscar-winning turn did not impress me as much as Holden and Hayakawa. Horses for courses. Thanks for getting back to me. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 06:16, 1 November 2013 (UTC)

Cool names of real people

Depending on how "cool" you find the name, you might want to add Dick Trickle. Dismas|(talk) 02:10, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Oh, yes, of course. Thanks for reminding me. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 02:27, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Jack, does Number 16 Bus Shelter count as a funny name? Thanks Jenova20 (email) 11:56, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks.
Surprised you didn't have the former Premier of British Columbia, Amor De Cosmos. You might want to check the Odds and Evens. We also had an article, Wikipedia’s List of Unusual Personal Names, which needed 5 nominations to remove, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of unusual personal names (5th nomination). CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 18:01, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
Never heard of friend Amor, that's why, but he easily qualifies. Some other good pickings there too. Thanks. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 18:33, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
The premier of BC I knew about but the President of Nigeria and his wife were an unexpected find, Goodluck Jonathan and Patience Jonathan. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 06:07, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

"gayrod" is a slur against Alex Rodriguez. I'm not so sure we want that kind of stuff on the ref desk. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 10:30, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

That is only one of the seven (7) definitions I quickly found. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 10:33, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
The OP could have found that (or maybe not, if Google is censored in China). I was about to ask the OP what context he was thinking of, and then it occurred to me that could be a slippery slope. Rodriguez has acquired various nicknames, plays on his standard nickname "A-Rod". He's not gay, he's just having his manhood challenged by rooters of Yankees-hating teams, especially fans of the Red Sox. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 10:38, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Sometimes we know too much. Put yourself in the shoes of someone who had never heard this word before - like me, for example. As far as I am concerned, there is no problem simply mentioning the word. It's not like WP is using it pejoratively towards anyone. Lots of words are offensive when used against people, but it's OK to discuss such words in a forum like ours. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 10:44, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

I probably don't need to tell you to be careful with edit summaries. "Jap" is not a term I use in public. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 18:45, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Fair point. I generally apply a lower standard with edit summaries, but you're right, one must never offend or be seen to. Thanks. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 19:19, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
There are probably worse things said. I must tell you that when I was a young'un, WWII was recent enough that the characterizations of the enemies were still current. When we played with toy soldiers we would draw lots, so to speak, to see who played the Allies and who played the "Japs". That word was all over the newspapers during the War and it took a while to become marginalized in the culture. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 19:35, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for November 17

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Dorothy Hammerstein, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Launceston (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

ESB and NTSB aircraft reports

Hi

As promised, there is a list of all incidents in New York from the NTSB database between 01/01/1962 and 01/01/1968. If you click on "Location" at the top of the column it is sortable. I can't see anything there that mentions a forced landing, but the reports from 1960 to 1980 are fairly limited, as there were also news reports of a "young man" doing an emergency landing on the George Washington Bridge which does not appear on the NTSB database.

The ASIAS database is being updated, but there is currently a gap between 1939 and 1965, so it is not that helpful :¬(

"Pan American Airlnes, Inc. 01/11/1938 Pago Pago - Somoa CAB-JA38B

United Air Lines, Inc., B-727, N7036U 08/16/1965 in Lake Michigan PB-196965"

I suspect there may be another about a forced landing in a square near the ESB, which I remember reading in a newspaper clipping when I did the last search in October but, annoyingly, I cannot find that one now for some reason. Chaosdruid (talk) 18:38, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Deaths in 2013 may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. I have a question on copyright, for which I have not been able to find an answer yet. Is it acceptable for an author to cut and paste a section of his own book into a WP article? Let us assume the added text is of moderate length. --Greenmaven (talk) 23:12, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, fellow Jack. Copyright is something I skim around the edge of. May I suggest you ask this question at Wikipedia talk:FAQ/Copyright. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 23:36, 13 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi - do you know who contributed the original page on Lily? I am a very remote relative of hers. Rory — Preceding unsigned comment added by Roryharrow (talkcontribs) 19:24, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi. On any page there will be a History link, usually located on the Page tab at the top. Click the History link, and you'll see a complete history of the page. Click "oldest" and you'll see who created it, and when. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 19:51, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

Need your help

Hello. I know that you tend to be interested in Academy Award articles and information. You also contribute quite heavily to them. Someone has decided to nominate List of actors who have appeared in multiple Best Picture Academy Award winners for deletion. I hope that you will take part in the discussion, which can be found here: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of actors who have appeared in multiple Best Picture Academy Award winners. Thanks!
