I've fixed your AfD nomination for this page, as it was not showing up properly on the AfD page. When setting up an AfD, it's generally best to click on the "Preloaded debate" link from the AfD header. This will put in the header and templates properly so that you don't have to do it by hand. Thanks for this article Jack! You may like to have a glance at Tanakh at Qumran. Perhaps you could help fill in the blanks, or create articles for some of the more interesting mss listed. Better still, companion articles listing important sub-groups of the DSS would be great. Anyway, you know your priorities best. I'm thrilled they overlapped with some of mine leading you to provide such an informative and clear article at Wiki. Shalom. Alastair Haines 09:42, 24 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your comment. Interesting old cove, wsn't he? So unselfish about his work. A picture would be good. British Crimean War Medal

edit

Hello there. Firstly, many thanks for your contributions to the above article - always nice to see someone take an interest in the area of campaign medals. I note that you recently moved this page from its old location at Crimea Medal to British Crimean War Medal. The general convention for medals is to use the actual medal name, with a national disambigator if the medal name is shared between countries (eg XXX Medal (United Kindgom), etc). I take it that you had the Ottoman Crimean medal in mind when making this move, but in this case the official name of the UK medal is the 'Crimea Medal' (which, to the best of my knowledge, is not a shared name) - the page move really tends to cloud the whole issue.

Best wishes, Xdamrtalk 23:33, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for expanding the article on Charlie Cairoli; it's always nice to see people adding material to an article that you created, you know?

As for your initial creation of a separate article under the misspelling "Charlie Caroli" - don't worry about it. If you make that sort of mistake again, you don't need to request that your version be deleted; just add the content to the earlier article (which you did), and change the new version into a redirect. Gennaro Rubino

edit

"however, a family in the UK claim to be descended from him through a daughter, so it would seem that on his release from prison he returned to London, an area he was already familiar with, and married."

Where does this information come from? Also, doesn't it seem more likely that he would have fathered a daughter before the attempted assassination (when he lived in London) rather than after he was sentenced to life imprisonment? Kaldari 15:51, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

P.S. - I just ordered an academic journal from Italy that supposedly has more details about Rubino's life. Kaldari 17:03, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wow, that's fascinating. If you could let her know that I am currently doing research on Rubino, I would love to hear from her. He is a figure of some intrigue due to the unsettled mystery of his true loyalties. He claimed to be allied with the anarchists, but worked for the Italian secret service to spy on them (although perhaps as a double agent). Also, your student may be unaware of the article recently published about Rubino since it was published in a very obscure Italian journal (devoted to the history of the city Rubino was born in). I would certainly love to trade a translation of the journal article for information about Rubino's family and perhaps even his life after prison. I will send you my email address and snail mail address and perhaps you could pass them along to her. I would be very glad to hear from her or even her grandmother (if she is still alive). Kaldari 22:56, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, unfortunately I haven't heard anything from the family yet. Thanks for passing along the date and place of death. It's good to know that at least :) If you talk to your student again, perhaps you could ask if the family knows Rubino's date of birth as well. Right now, I only know it was in the year 1859 (and even that is not quite certain). Kaldari 14:39, 18 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Finally received the Italian journal with the article about Rubino. The article is 8 pages long (more than I was expecting) and even includes a photo of him (which I have added to the article). Now I just have to find someone who knows Italian! I still haven't heard from the family, but if you see your student again, you should let her know that I would be happy to send them a copy of the article (or a translation thereof). If they have any other photographs of Rubino or historical documents I would be greatly interested to see them. Kaldari 00:20, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

One last request: if there's any chance your student could supply the name of Rubino's wife and daughter (as I'm not sure if their in the journal article or not), that would be helpful as well. Cheers! Kaldari 22:10, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll email you a PDF of my scans. I'm in the process of getting them translated. Might take a few weeks for the translation though. I'm currently talking with an historian in Pittsburg who is working on a book about propaganda by the deed. Obviously Rubino would be a good addition. I would still be quite interested in finding out the name of Rubino's wife and daughter in Britain, although I understand if your student is concerned about protecting her privacy. If you could just make sure that she has my contact info and knows that I'm interested, that would be most appreciated. Cheers. Kaldari (talk) 23:20, 5 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I will do. She's only 14 and is a bit wary of emailing strangers. But I have let her know of your interest in Rubino and I will remind her again. I've asked her to chat to her Nan for any info she might recollect. Cheers. Jack1956 (talk) 08:16, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I understand. I assumed she was a college student. Perhaps she could just pass along my contact info to her parents then. Kaldari (talk) 19:51, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I never did hear anything from your student or her parents. I ended up just adding a mention of descendants in England to the Rubino Talk page since I couldn't come up with anything verifiable. It's a pity that such a chance lead turned out to be fruitless. Kaldari (talk) 23:40, 12 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your efforts. I finally did track down a lead on Rubino's family in London, so you won't have to pester your student any more :) Kaldari (talk) 22:08, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Zoo/Rees/Herbert

edit

Hello, Jack. Marc Shepherd wrote that the auctions took place in 1965, and you write 1966. Where did you get the date? Also, do you have a cite for the remarriage of Herbert's widow? Best regards, -- Ssilvers 23:43, 14 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the messages. Do you mean that you have an actual obituary from 1966, or are you merely saying that Wikipedia articles state (without giving a reliable source) that it was 1966? Because I have not seen anything on Wikipedia that gives a source, whereas both the G&S Archive AND the G&S discography give a date of 1965, also without any citations. I saw another website from a production of The Zoo that says that the auction was at Southeby's in 1865, but that is just a director's note. A mystery? -- Ssilvers 14:28, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have put out some feelers, and I am hoping that someone will get back to me with a good citation either way. Am reading your new Fishe article. -- Ssilvers 16:58, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I have received several responses now, and everyone agrees that it was 1966. We cite a Times article from 1966, and I suspect that that article gives the info. Also, I have been referred to a G&S Journal cite that I have now added to the articles, and I changed the dates in The Zoo article to 1966, so now all the dates agree. Thanks for catching this! BTW, done with Fishe - I added some refs, images and links and tried to change some of the language so that it is less like the Whowaswho article. -- Ssilvers 23:16, 15 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mart Sander again

edit

He is back. Please note his response regarding the images. Has he addressed your concern about them? If so, how do we retrieve them? Also, what do you think about the changes to the article? I tried to explain to him about the need for independent citations, but I have no way of reviewing the new reference that he has provided in Estonian - It is not obvious that it supports the fact for which he has cited it. Also, we have long been struggling with how to support his claim that he sang with the Estonian National Opera. I imagine that he was in the chorus - He was rather young at the time, but his own website is not an independent source for this information. Aaargh. -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:50, 26 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Did you see this on the image discussion page?:

Dear everyone, I had no idea every single upload is being discussed to the extremes! So let me present myself: my name is Mart Sander, and I do hold copyright to each of the pictures that I have uploaded. These were made by the photographers who work for me, they have been paid for their work and resultingly I own the copyright. Uploading the pictures I do release them into public domain. If there are any problems, my e-mail is mart@martsander.com. Cheers and merry Christmas, Mart. -- User:Zanderz

Is that Quaddell guy an admin? If not, how about the admin(s) who closed the discussion at the image discussion? Also, should we copy over to the new image summaries the above statement by Zanderz? If you think so, please go ahead and do it. Finally, what about Sanders' new changes (see my question above)? Hope you had a happy holiday. -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:40, 26 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Blackmore‎

Happy New Year! Question: Why an article on Blackmore? Oudin; O'Mara

edit

Done! Feel like returning the favor at Joseph O'Mara? All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 06:33, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

To turn all the refs into proper <ref> format with a description of the article's author, title and date (and page numbers, where relevant), like I did at Oudin's article. But you're right: it's not really that important. Frankly, I'd rather that you dug up more refs for Blackmore, since I still think he's probably not notable (having essentially had an understudy career), and shouldn't have an article - He's certainly of interest to D'OC fans, but as someone like O'Mara shows, Blackmore's career was not notable per WP:NOTE. Since the WhoWasWho website is so excellent, it makes minor members of the D'OC seem to be much more notable than they really are, by giving all the gorey details of their careers there. Just my 2 cents. All the best. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:18, 3 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just as a friendly heads-up, when you file a checkuser case, it's usually wise to post notification of the case (including a link to the report) on the talkpages of the affected users. That serves multiple purposes: It's a good faith courtesy note, plus it maintains a record in case the information may be needed later, plus other users that are watching that talkpage who may have similar concerns, may be very interested in learning of such a checkuser report. :) FYI, Elonka 06:30, 7 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Whitechapel Murders

edit

I have tried to make sense of the whole thing at The Whitechapel Murders (1888-91) by just listing the facts and not engaging in Ripperologist flights of fancy about who Jack the Ripper was or how many people he killed (the Ripperologist's precious 'canonical five') or whether he leaped into the Thames after the Kelly murder or was committed to an asylum etc etc. The Ripper article is in the process of being replaced by a better one but we agreed on the talk page there that as not all the Whitechapel murders could be ascribed to JTR that a seperate article should deal with the eleven Whitechapel murders listed in the Metropolitan Police file on the case, whether or not they were commited by the legendary Ripper. Tell me what you think. The article is fairly rudimentary at the moment and could be much improved. Colin4C (talk) 17:50, 12 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Jack the Ripper article has now been unlocked. Colin4C (talk) 21:22, 13 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Suspected DreamGuy sockpuppet

edit

Hi there. You said "If I'm correct it is at least a violation of code B." If this is right, then it shouldn't be too hard to make the request. Just set up the request like last time, but you need to include a link to the ArbCom remedy in question, and then a link to the actual edits, or a few of them if it's a lot, (in diff form) that would be a violation of that remedy if it is indeed DreamGuy that made those edits. Finally, a short explanation in words as to why you suspect it is a sockpuppet (how is the behavior similar?) would be nice. I'm not too picky about format, just that there is actual hard evidence provided. Thanks. :-) Dmcdevit·t 02:59, 25 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, saw the new request, and recommend a couple formatting tweaks:
  • Move the new request to the top of the page, above the archive line
  • As Dmcdevit said above, be sure to include a link to the ArbCom page
  • Try to give a couple specific diffs that say, "Look what the sockpuppet did," and "see how this is similar to what DreamGuy did." Just editing the same pages isn't necessarily proof.
Good luck, Elonka 21:22, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
(reply)
Basically, you need to write a report from the assumption that whichever clerk is reviewing the report, that they may have never heard of DreamGuy in their lives, have no idea who's in the right or wrong, and have no idea that there was ever any kind of ArbCom case. So you have to spoonfeed them.  :) --Elonka 21:49, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Much better!  :) Also, please be sure to post a notice at all of the affected users' talkpages (including DreamGuy), informing them about the report. --Elonka 22:17, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, I had read that he was editing under an anon while blocked. I was asking for confirmation of that. I am not contending that. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 00:52, 5 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I would suggest that you elevate the issue to the ArbCom Enforcement area, as DG is under their purview. Dmcdevit has intervened on at least two prior occasions to save DreamGuy's bacon. He past behavior indicates that he cannot be relied upon to act neutrally in this matter. As Elonka crafted the last matter which resulted in his block, you certainly should confer with her or with DickLyon. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 20:56, 6 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
FYI, I just noticed that the IP was blocked, so this may all be a non-issue at this point: [1] --Elonka 19:29, 7 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I suspect this might become less of a problem now. He has been prohibited from editing from anything other than a single account. What remains to be seen is if DreamGuy will use the eponymous account or a brand new one that he specifies. Either way, I think he will be editing more honestly from now on. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 18:33, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure you are aware of it, but 1) you aren't an admin either, 2) admins aren't in charge of content, 3) you don't just get to say you aren't done with something and demand nobody else touch it, 4) you don't have to nominate something for deletion if it's a redirect to an article that already fully covers a topic, 5) your comments about you supposedly knowing Wikipedia policy and so forth and that you demand I not do things are highly incivil, 6) false reports for revenge purposes don't get you anywhere.
In addition, you are banned from posting to my talk page thanks to continuing example that you are not here to follow the Wikipedia policies but instead that you hope to get your own way through bullying and threats. DreamGuy (talk) 19:32, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sure, post a number of extremely inaccurate info on another user's talk page before failing to demonstrate anything approaching courage and maturity by banning any response? Not bloody likely, sport. If he says he's working on the article, do show a modicum of good sense and good faith by allowing him to finish the thing before you blind revert it.
You keep talking about how everyone else seems to not be following wiki rules and policies. Since we are all wrong, and you are right, perhaps you would be happier elsewhere. And no, since i don't get to post on your page, you don't get to respond on mine. Disregard my request at your peril. - Arcayne (cast a spell) 19:59, 27 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

If by "utterly devoid of any useful information" he means gave him the very important info that it was not Jack the Ripper in the image and that it was about the Vigilance Committee... but apparently Arcayne is up to his old tricks of ignoring anything anyone with any actual knowledge on the topic has to say. Actually, it was something more closely approximating not rewarding bad behavior, Dreamguy. List of Freemasons

edit

Jack, you recently added actor Harry Corbett to the above article. I thank you for your contribution. Unfortunately the inclusion criteria for adding someone to that list is quite strict. We insist on having reliable sources cited at the time of inclusion. Simply listing the lodge name and number does not qualify as a reliable source. I have therefor removed your addition. Please feel free to return Mr. Corbett to the list - with a reliable source cited to verify that he is indeed a Mason. If you have questions, please contact me. Thanks. Blueboar (talk) 00:41, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Go ahead and upload the image to Wikipedia, Jack - you've worked hard enough in finding and identifying it, so you should get the enduring credit for uploading it. I'll check it later for any possible licensing issues that might crop up. Whitechapel Murder Victims

edit

Hi Jack. Just advert to the fact that a lot of the separate articles on the Whitechapel murder victims in the wikipedia are very shoddy indeed. My guess is that those who have tried to improve them in the past four years get attacked by a mystery assailant and expire whilst waiting for the impotent guardians of law and order to arrive on the scene, thus leaving said articles in said shoddy state. I am attempting to make some (slow) improvements... Colin4C (talk) 10:09, 23 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dorset Street

edit

Dorset Street used to have a wikipedia entry but some editors had it deleted as 'non-notable' whilst my back was turned...I recently created Flower and Dean Street which nobody seems to have noticed yet. In the past some wicked editors attempted to have my Wormwood Street deleted but fortunately I was informed about this and managed to save it in time. Some editors have odd ideas about notability, judging what is notable by the criterion of their own ignorance about the subject. As the potential wikipedia editor Al Capone said "I don't even know what street Canada is on". Colin4C (talk) 17:14, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image:Josephusbust.jpg

edit

Hi, this is an intriguing picture, and its being used on the Josephus article; however at the moment the image page does not really give enough information to verify it, at least not easily. The page gives two pieces of info, that it was "Scanned from a copy of Josephus' 'The Jewish War' dated 1888" - and, added later by User:Briangotts, "For identification with Josephus, see Les Dossiers d' Archéologie, 2001" - Another editor pointed out that the first bit "could apply to any of multiple sources: Flavii Josephi opera edidit et apparatu critico instruxit Benedictus Niese, (6 vols., Berlin, large version 1887-94 or small version, text only, 1888-95) or an edition by Naber (6 vols., Leipsic, 1888-96)." - The second bit is equally (if not more) ambiguous, as the reference Les Dossiers d' Archéologie, 2001 might refer to any of around 150 articles published in 9 or 10 volumes that year. [2]

Is there any clarification you can provide that would ease verifiability? Thanks. Brando130 (talk) 17:10, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. In reviewing your DYK nom for Gilbert and Sullivan for All I noticed some gaps in your citations (example first and last paragraphs Description section). I am assuming that the information in these paragraphs was taken from the external links. However, if that is the case I don't understand why you didn't bother to cite them in the article since that would have been a more consistant approach. Could you please verify that information. Thanks Jack for a well done job of creating and editing the new article on Yehud coinage. As you know that the first Yehud coin was found quite recently, about a half century ago due to its small size, and has the least scholarly studies done of all ancient Jewish coins. I hope by the new article you created, many scholars will become aware of such a phenomenal subject which is greatly understudied. I hope to add photos and the information I gathered on these amazing living artifacts that are approximately 2400 years old. Thanks again. Fiddler7 (talk) 20:03, 4 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Shishak

edit

Thanks for the photo. I have always thought that Shishak sacked Jerusalem because Pharaoh's daughter and Solomon did not produce an heir for the throne and the people rebelled against Rehoboam partially because of her upkeep. If this was not his daughter then it would have been a sister or cousin. Pharaoh's huge dowry of the City of Gezer had greater expectations than simply marrying off a daughter. An alliance through marriage and a ruling heir are implied...it turned out to be a disappointment for Pharaoh and Egypt..not making an argument for inclusion into the article, just a personal observation...I appreciate the article.

I have always believed the scripture literally when it says he took everything which is repeated twice for emphasis. Chronicles is less reliable or misleading in its references because it was written well after the exile and not in a time when they actually had firsthand knowledge. Kings had contemporary writers to the Sacking of Jerusalem. I believe people seek something that disappeared, at His will, long ago. My 2 cents for what it is worth, Cheers,⋙–Berean–Hunter—► ((⊕)) 01:53, 27 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

There is a problem with your image of the Masonic tracing board. I gather that your rational for inclusion is that you took the picture of it... that works for most photographs, but does not work for photographs of other images, which may be under copywrite themselves... Thanks for your comments on my page. If you could be specific where you claim sources are not verified, I'd be very grateful. Wikipedia is a minefield. All the information is true, but I accept that some might be disputed because there is occasionally only my word for it!

I tried editing the reference list at the bottom of the page, but couldn't work out how to do it. I notice that some of the links there are incorrect, usually because of a stray typo.

Simon treves (talk) 14:18, 20 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Further to your last message, thanks so much for taking the trouble to clear up my page and provide references/citations etc. It's looking a lot better already.

As to Claudia Schiffer, this was a private arrangement, negotiated initially via her New York agent, in late 2001. That is to say, it was never publicised. The only person who could verify it would be Ms Schiffer herself, or her P.A.

Thanks again.

Image of Alfred Tennyson Dickens

edit

Hi, I am writing to you from the E.O. Hoppé Estate Collection, where I am the chief archivist. I would like to let you know that the head and shoulders profile image you have used of Alfred Tennyson Dickens is a photograph by E.O. Hoppé, taken in 1911. We have this negative in our archive. Since Hoppé did not die until the 1970's, the image is actually still under copyright, which is held by this estate. We don't mind images being used if they are credited and the quality is good, so long as it is for an educational purpose such as this. I am new to Wikipedia, but thought it was time I joined as I see a lot of Hoppé images here without credit given.... I'm not sure yet how to make any changes to the site, so thought at this point I would just let you know the image. EOHoppe (talk) 01:09, 4 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thank you very much for your recent contributions to the Seymour article, I've recently uploaded some images of his works, (from Commons) I was wondering if you could possibly access, and upload any images of Robert Seymour or his wife Jane, I know they exist, as I have (very poor) photocopies of them both. Unfortunately, the Royal Acadamy were also unable to find any records of the current whereabouts of his Tasso exhibit, any ideas? Finally, I can also "prove & name" the chief suspect in his death, (NB: unfortunately "original research," but, he should have been given a Christian burial !!! Would you mind if I Emailed you this section for your opinion, and/or for inclusion in the article? Thanks again: Regards Steve. Stephen2nd (talk) 02:18, 9 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Gads Hill

edit

I see you are putting a lot of work into Gad's Hill. This article has been very poor and littered with POVs in the past- its good to see that it is getting a little TLC. I am loathe to do to much editing here as I know the husband of one of the governors and have worked in the past with members of their staff. I see that the way forward is to try and bring it into line with other school articles while including the Dicken's connection. I read their web site- some of the pages that fail to render in Firefox. The PDF download of the students handbook is useful [4]- though the stats need to be verified by an external source.

Our page needs to be improved by getting rid of vague statements- almost none of the Traditions section is supported by references. Sentences like There are also many daily extracurricular activities need to be removed or expanded.

Back to references, it is generally better to use the Citation templates.

Book Citations

<ref name= >{{Citation | last = | first = | author-link = | last2 = | first2 = | author2-link = | title = | place= | publisher = | year = | location = | volume = | edition = | url = | doi = | id = | isbn = }}</ref>

journal (or periodical)

<ref name= >{{Citation | last = | first = | author-link = | last2 = | first2 = | author2-link = | title = | journal = | volume = | issue = | pages = | date = | year = | url = | doi = | id = | issn = }}</ref>

Web Citations

<ref name= >{{Citation | last = | first = | author-link = | last2 = | first2 = | author2-link = | title = | date = | year = | url = | accessdate = }}</ref>

Back to stats. How many kids did take the 2007 exam- this is relevant. There is a scam where you remove the kids who are likely to fail from the roll to increase the stats- by stating 17, 18, 19 etc you are proving that the school did not resort to this scam. Local knowledge suggests that they do a good job with the kids they look after but the article does not prove this without that stat. Have you got access to a verifiable source.

There seems to be some disquiet in the village about the proposed building works- this could be interesting to investigate further.

Clem

Command performances

Royal Variety Performance says that they started in 1912, when clearly they started long before that. Can you fix it? No rush! All the best, -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:54, 16 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I love the Stage Beauty site. The table of performances for Victoria is very interesting, and several have a G&S connection.
  • 1st Feb, 1887, Sweet Hearts Mr. and Mrs. Kendal -- Sweethearts (play) is a Gilbert play that the Kendals played frequently and, for some time, without authorization by Gilbert.
  • 6th March, 1891 The Gondoliers Savoy Theatre Co. Of course this was D'Oyly Carte.
  • 17th Mar, 1891 A Pair of Spectacles was by Sydney Grundy, one of Sullivan's collaborators, and Sir John Hare was a longtime friend of Gilbert's
  • 4th Sep, 1891 The Mikado D'Oyly Carte Opera Co. Balmoral Interesting that the Queen should call for two G&S operas in one year, and then not again.

Thanks! -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:39, 17 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Jack. It made no sense to have an article on Royal Variety Performance and no article on Royal Command Performance. I wish I could find a reference for the history of command performances on the European continent. I set up a disambiguation page, as it appears that there are several films, books and other things called "command performance". -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:29, 17 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
For Europe, I don't think we need a thorough discussion for each country, but there should be at least some acknowledgement in the article that there have been command performances in France, Germany, Vienna, etc. Otherwise, it looks like command performances only happen in England. My google search showed some examples of things that *mentioned* a command performance in a European capital, but nothing that gave any real discussion. I know there must be something out there that says they take place through out Europe, but I haven't seen it. There's no rush, and the situation is much better than before you created the article. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:42, 17 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Check the history - SSilvers started the editing war and already reverted 3X today so if you're going to threaten to block someone you'd better include him. Once a discussion starts on the talk page you're expected to add to it before you edit, but I'm the only one doing that. The version SSilvers keeps reverting to repeats several facts twice, as if he's trying to make the article look longer than it is. Coenwulf's coinage

edit

I've reverted your change to Coenwulf of Mercia as I can't find a source that supports it. Do you have something we can use? I looked at this, but it only lists a series of objects that several funds helped with, one of which is the Friends of the British Museum. I don't think that's specific enough. It seems likely to be true, but since the article is fully cited now it would be nice to keep it that way by finding a source for this. Thanks -- Mike Christie (talk) 10:27, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Those look great. Thanks for adding the references. Mike Christie (talk) 11:47, 13 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Multiple consecutive edits, edit summaries

edit

Hello Jack, and thanks for your contributions. I'd like to make a couple suggestions, if you don't mind. It will be easier for you and your co-editors to collaborate on articles if, instead of making multiple consecutive edits in rapid succession on an article, you use the "Show preview" button to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits. It also helps others watching those pages if you provide an edit summary. Thanks in advance for considering this.

We're a pretty good team, I'd say. It's a shame we couldn't come up with a birth or death date. I'll ask SavoyNet if anyone can come up with at least a death date. -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:32, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

BTW, it's safe to say that she died by 1940, because articles in The Times about Jessie Bond in the late '30s and around 1940 say that Jessie and Durward Lely are the only original Savoyards left alive. They were not correct, see Decima Moore, but I think the statement clearly implies that Braham, Grey and that crowd were all dead except for Lely and Bond. So I think it's safe to say "1930s". -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:42, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Images from boisestate

edit

Hi. I no longer use images from the G&S Archive, because even though they are public domain (at least in the US) the archivist gets upset, and I'd like to keep him friendly. So I promised him I wouldn't take any more, and he said that he wouldn't object to the ones already here. Of course, you never made any promises to him.... I just thought I'd let you know. In my opinion, we should be able to use any of the pre-1923 images without being criticized. I also don't generally like to use the photos from the Who Was Who site, because often our bios already rely heavily on text from that site, so I figure it's better to get images from eleswhere if possible. Question about File:Josephmerrick1889.jpg

edit

Hi, I found a better quality image of this same photograph and I wanted to upload this new version of it, but when I went to do so I didn't see the link under the "File History" section that directs one to upload a new version. And so I was wondering if you knew how to do it and if so if you could explain how.Chhe (talk) 23:56, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Andrew Delbanco

edit

Any interest in doing a bio article for Andrew Delbanco? He is Director of American Studies at Columbia University, has written extensively for The New York Review of Books [6], The New Republic, Raritan and many other journals, has published several books, including Melville: His World and Work (2006), The Real American Dream: A Meditation on Hope (1999), Required Reading: Why Our American Classics Matter Now (1997), The Death of Satan: How Americans Have Lost the Sense of Evil (1995), The Puritan Ordeal (1989), and William Ellery Channing: An Essay on the Liberal Spirit in America (1981).(list of books). In 2001, he was named by Time as “America's Best Social Critic".See this. A double graduate of Harvard (B.A., Ph.D.), he has also been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. Only he and Edward Said have won the Trilling Award twice, once for Melville and once for The Puritan Ordeal. See his American Studies faculty page

No problem if you're not interested. Just noticed that he doesn't have a bio. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:15, 6 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

FYI -- Frances Coles image

edit

Hello Jack,

One of your images of Francis Coles that you had originally uploaded under Fair-use rationale was transferred to the Commons with a different rationale. Consequently, someone is claiming that the image is still under crown copyright and has stripped the permission from it. That means deletion will probably come up next...

File:Francescoles.jpg at Commons

but also see the article history for Whitechapel murders to get background.

Thought you might want to know. Cheers,

Hi. I'm a bit bothered by this material you created, in respect of the link you have given for Victoria, Stoke-on Trent. it seems to me more probable that Victoria Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent is the right place. Could you check your source? Thanks SamuelTheGhost (talk) 22:20, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Are you sure it was my edit? I've looked at the revision history and I can't see that it was. Regardless of that, I've checked the online sources which mostly support Victoria Theatre, so I'll change the edit. Jack1956 (talk) 09:22, 2 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Glenn, I’ve developed the article in my Sandbox at: User:Stephen2nd/Kingdom of Great Britain 1603-1714‎. Unfortunately, my writing skills are very basic, and I am eager for the Copyeditors to remedy this. With the exception of possibly adding a Heralds/Heraldry section later, I’ve finished the general layout. May I seek your opinion on whether this new version, in comparison with the old version, adequately covers all of the necessary topics (& WP criteria’s) on the subject matter? You are now a Reviewer

edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 04:46, 16 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Looking for good editors for the DramaOut

edit

Hi Jack,

I'd like to invite you to the The 3rd Great Wikipedia Dramaout. It was originally centered around keeping the drama down but I feel the more important aspect of joining is the sense of accomplishment for the combined efforts of the few determined editors. It is great to watch the log file grow as we create content during the drive. :)

Here is the log for the 1st DramaOut and the 2nd if you would like to see what happens.

I hope you can join us!

After reading around wikipedia a little bit more I am beginning to understand how annoying may be dealing with undequalified people trying to put forth their opinion in the areas of their lack of expertise and frustrating is dealing with them every day, fixing their sloppy edits rather than adding something significant. Therefore I apologize for my intervention. In the future I will try to stick to the areas where I have a sure knowledge. Lorem Ip (talk) 15:05, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks For Your Hatnote Here

edit

[7]

I thank you for your work at disambiguating pages.

Just some constructive criticism:

  1. We no longer use {{otheruses4}}. it is a deprecated template, and we use {{about}} instead.
  2. Since the purpose of this hatnote is to disambiguate articles, it is not necessary to repeat the duplicating part of the article title in the hatnote:
For example:
Instead of saying: Say:
Philip Bond the comic book artist the comic book artist
Philip Bond the actor the actor

I hope you can find the instances of otheruses4, delete them, and replace them with {{about}}. Thank you and cheers199.126.224.245 (talk) 06:10, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ivan Moffat

edit

Hi. :) I'm a member of the Wikimedia Foundation's OTRS team, handling e-mails sent to the Foundation. The Foundation has received an e-mail indicating that File:Ivan-moffat.jpg is not Ivan Moffat. (For my records and for any other OTRS members: Ticket:2010090110000775. I'm afraid only OTRS members can read the e-mail, as e-mails to the Foundation are confidential.) I cannot determine from the link you provided on uploading the image, here, how the source identified him. When searching the website for him by name, it does seem that they do not currently have an image associated with him: [8]. I'm wondering if it's possible that the website once erroneously identified the picture as depicting Ivan Moffat but has since removed it from his profile. Can you provide any more information about this image and how you come to the conclusion that it is Moffat? --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:51, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. :) As I said, I kind of suspected that might have been the case. Probably somebody pointed out their error to them. What I'll do, then, is go ahead and remove it from the article, and it will be deleted in due course as an orphaned non-free image (since we don't know who this guy is anymore :D). I'm sure the bot will give you its heads up about it. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:53, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Oh, except I won't, becuase you've already done that. :) It should proceed apace, then. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:54, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
