Looks like some bot confusion that got cleared up by Moonriddengirl before I even saw this. Sorry you had to go through accusations like that; I think everyone involved was acting in good faith, but all the same it led to useless stress and wasted time. And today's technical problem with the Uncategorized Articles list is...

There are four articles which were all deleted on January 21, but are on the uncategorized articles list as of January 28 — and all four of them absolutely refuse to drop from the list, no matter how many times I undelete, tag, vandalize, detag, retag, redelete, reundelete, redetag, revandalize and reredelete them. They are:

• Rob Shift
• Summer Fun (2012 film)
• The Adventures of Miranda O.
• The Part of Awesome

The problem is in the enwiki_p database. I ran this query:

Now, that row shouldn't be there after the article has been deleted. (To verify, I found an article up for speedy deletion, Alec Michod, verified its existence in enwiki_p.page, deleted it, and verified that the row was gone.) Hi JaGa, i wasn't too sure how to send u reply to your message so i thought we could discuss it over coffee as when looking at your profile the heart icon appeared :) I too don't want to get into an edit war either, however i don't particularly want to change or remove the information that has been put on there. There was I do agree with you that it goes into the disambiguation page yes, however.. there are many pages that are set out in the same page format as Lana (given name) if you could look at Geoffrey (given name) for me, you will see the same table of contents give or take a few different categories ie. military on Geoffrey(given name) & Botanical on Lana(given name) etc. So i think we could leave it up there if its not too much of a hassle to you? It is done in accordance with other "given name" pages, & i must say i think its every informative & looks rather nice, so i would like it to stay please :) not simply for those reasons but because there are other "given name" pages that have the same formatted information on them, i do agree there are also ones that have it on the disambiguation page as well or only on the disambiguation page but none the less there are given name pages that are done exactly the same. I realy do appreciate the manner in which you have approached me about this i must say also, as u were quiet nice about it & i appreciate that. I can see that there are things u disagree wit about it & I would not like to offend you or to have a conflicting situation arise between myself & anyone for that matter. But i do think that it is okay how i have formatted the page as i have said, because there are other given name pages that are done in the exact same format. so please do give this consideration but do share your thoughts with me on this. DAB points

How come im not showing up on the leaderboard? Been doing hordes for the last 3 days.

I've got you for 26 fixes. Unfortunately not all disambig fixes get into the leaderboard; some day I hope to expand its coverage, but for the time being I have to limit it to the dabs listed in the monthly list and the bonus list. If I included all disambigs in the monthly contest, the Toolserver simply couldn't handle it. A year or two down the road, as the number of dablinks drops, it will become feasible.

Also can you put back the edit page on the same window instead of opening a new one>?Lihaas (talk) 05:13, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Article:Otra Freshwateracidification is marked with red, and there are no present explainationon Wikipedia. That would be the case, if acidification was a problem in the river Otra. Fornuneately it is no problem, as I have explained in the article. My problem is that there is no exact explaination avalable in english, but I thought it was not nessesarry eith further explaination, as long as the acidification problem is not there.

Article: Reiårsfossen This article is translated from the Norwegian Wikipedia, where the article has no references. In the time the legend the article is refering to, a farmers (meaning the farm owner) doughter was ranked higher than a son of workman, a cotter, a farm worker. That rank difference was so wide that it made marrages difficult, evan impossible. Instead of a dowry, was often the future groom sat on a sample, as in this legend, especially in terms of class distinctions. Anyone are welcome to explain this better than I did in my article.

MSU Interview

Dear JaGa,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. I really appreciate you looking over my edits. I had worried that there might be two Meenas, but I guess I didn't use enough logic to see that one was producing movies before the other was born. I'm trying to be careful but I see that I need to be more careful. IMDb references quite a few Meenas. I'll look into that to see if I can make some sense of it. I'll also go back to the edits I made and revert any that go to the wrong one.

I'm copying this to your talk page. I don't know if that's considered good practice, but another Wikipedian had done that and it made sense to me. Let me know if that's appropriate. I don't want to sound like a lost puppy, but I'd appreciate it if I could ask questions to someone involved in the disambiguation project. Would it be OK if I asked you?

Hi SchreiberBike. Indian actors/actresses can be infuriatingly difficult, thanks to their penchant for non-unique single word names. So don't feel bad about that; we'll straighten it out. (BTW, I was glad to see you chose to revert the ones you're unsure of; playing it safe is always the correct course.)

When I left my note, I added your talk page to my watchlist; I think it's reasonable to assume someone who left you a message will watch your page. Responding on the other person's talk is also perfectly fine; it's really a matter of personal preference. I wouldn't do both, though - why don't we just continue our discussion here?

First a general question - Am I cheating if I just do the easier ones on the current list? Some are straight forward and others are difficult. Can I just do the easy ones, or should I be working on each one. If everybody skips the tough ones, they will never get done.

A slightly more specific question – I’ve only been moving lines from the “To do” section to the “Done” section after I’ve cleared everything except the “Wikipedia:”, “User:”, “Talk:”, “User talk:”, “(redirect page)”, and “(disambiguation)” links. Is that right or should I also be moving the ones where I’ve dealt with items by posting next to the links?

Finally a real specific question - Today I worked on Locality. I dealt with most by assigning one of the links from the disambiguation page, creating a link to Wiktionary, or removing the link. I’m having trouble where there is a political subdivision called a “Locality”. Those are addressed on the disambiguation page for Australia, Canada, and Sweden, but there appear to be similar versions of “Locality” in England, Argentina, India, Algeria, and Spain. The correct thing to do I suppose would be to learn the details about the use of the word “Locality” in those countries and write articles on them, but I’m not likely to do that. What should I do in this case?

1. By all means, focus on the easy ones. If your contributions to DPL are driven primarily by a sense of duty, you'll eventually burn out, and we don't want that. If on the other hand you participate because it's an enjoyable pastime, you may stick around for the long haul. Myself, I think of dab-fixing as Sudoku That Matters - relaxing, fun puzzles that also happen to improve the greatest encyclopedia in the history of mankind.
2. When to move to the Done list? Well, there's no hard and fast rule, but I regularly move any disambig with five or fewer links to the Done list. I'd say if you've worked through a disambig list and you've got fewer than ten remaining that require expert attention, go ahead and move it.
3. If "locality" is being used in the generic English sense, unlink per WP:OVERLINK. If you've determined that there is an administrative unit in Algeria called a "locality", simply use the redlink Locality (Algeria). Redlinks are great since they spur article creation (and especially great since they spur article creation by someone else!) For England, there's some useful information about localities to be had, so I would create a redirect Locality (England) that points to List of localities in England by population. This is better than linking directly to the list article since some day that should probably redirect to an article about British administrative subdivisions. Finally, add any redlinks you use to the Locality disambig. --JaGa^talk 08:00, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Some more questions.

1. Is there a way to make watchlists work with this project? After I edit a page, I’d like to be able to watch the page for a week or so to see if someone reverts my edit, or if someone completes a disambiguation needed note. At first I had my preferences set to watch every page I edit, but that got to be too much. Now I’m not watching anything unless I specifically click on the star, so I’m not seeing any response.
2. What about disambiguation pages where there is a lot of description of the word? Example Kismet. People intend to link to the meaning of the word and the meaning of the word is at that page. I could substitute the Wiktionary link, but to my reading the definition is better at Wikipedia.
3. If I need to go out to the wider Internet to figure out the right link to disambiguate to, should I be adding a reference to that source?

1. AFAIK, a self-updating "everything I've edited in the last week" watchlist is an intriguing idea, but nothing like that exists at present. You may want to bring it up at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), but be warned, they aren't always friendly there.
2. Kismet is an interesting one. For starters, WP:MOSDAB states a disambig should not contain content like that. It should start with "Kismet may refer to:" and jump into a list of article titles from there. The question for us is, does the content merit its own article? My inclination is yes, but we have to be careful since we're wading into Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a dictionary territory. I'll bring it up at DPL.
3. Regarding addition of a source, well, it's a nice thing to do, but I have to admit I don't always do that myself. I wouldn't worry too much about it, to be completely honest. Wiki maintenance work is a lot like an assembly line; we work on one aspect, and rely on others to finish other tasks. If you enjoy adding sources, by all means do it; but if you consider it a chore, it's OK if you don't feel like doing it. --JaGa^talk 23:23, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

It depends on what I'm doing. If I'm working on the bonus list, for instance, I exclusively use Dab Solver, far and away the best disambiguating tool out there. If I'm going through a list of links to a single dab, and I expect a large percentage of those fixes to go to a single target, my approach is a bit more involved. Let's say I'm going through Mughal, a frequent visitor to our lists. Most of those links will be fixed with Mughal Empire, but many will not. I would first go through the list in WP:AWB (approval required for use) but skip each one that should go to Mughal Empire. Finally, I would use WP:WikiCleaner to finish the lot. This powerful tool is great for mass-dabfixing; for my example, I would say "replace [[Mughal]] with [[Mughal Empire|Mughal]] for each article in the list". Then it cranks through the list, automatically doing each submission for you. This is much faster than AWB, where you have to submit each dabfix yourself, one at a time. --JaGa^talk 04:14, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

By the way, few English people would know that technical meaning of locality; most would assume the vague dictionary definition. It would be neat to gather the disambiguation strategies of several DPL contributors. Each person seems to have a unique focus and approach. Woohookitty concentrates on the monthly list, JustAGal the bonus; DB2412 has many interests with a specialization in WP:CONCEPTDABs; R'n'B always has an eye on the big picture and new developments; JamesAM, well, I've never been able to figure out his methodology, and would love to understand it. JaGa, some new questions. I'm still having fun disambiguating and I really appreciate having someone to ask. First, are we supposed to be disambiguating (examples in the links) Category, Portal, and File pages? Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links#How to help number 4 only mentions Article and Template pages, but not the ones I mentioned above. Second question, what happens to the disambiguation pages with a lot of links which are difficult to attack? There are many where I don't feel like I can make a significant change, so I pass on them. Every once in a while a script dies (or gets killed) at just the right moment to prevent the script from running again until I clear out some tables. (For the curious lurker, I don't allow the script to run if the table ch_t_results exists, to avoid using up max database connections when scripts are hanging.) As of today, those four deleted articles I asked about last month are still on the uncats list (for reminder's sake, they were Rob Shift, Summer Fun (2012 film), The Adventures of Miranda O. and The Part of Awesome) — and I've tried the undelete, tag, detag, redelete cycle again but they still won't drop. Is there any chance you could just add them to an exclusions list of some kind at your end, instead of waiting, waiting, waiting for the technical issue to be resolved at the server level? DPL bot BRFA #2

Well, DPL bot couldn't do it because its work is based on a large scan that doesn't include user space. If you have a specific page in mind (like an article you're developing in your user space), you could use Dab solver to check it. --JaGa^talk 18:25, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

simple: disambiguation

I've been poking around simple: and working out what tools can help out. R'n'B suggested you. I've been doing things like getting the MOSDAB translated into Simple English, and I've started evaluating tools like dispenser's. The disambiguation world over there is a bit of a mess; the dab pages are in poor repair, and because of that root cause I imagine that it's hard to disambiguate, so there's lots of links. There are no reports, so I can't gauge how bad the problem is. There's only about 2k dab pages, so the dab page formatting could be fixed quickly with enough warm bodies. Then DPL bot could message article writers and there would be underlying dab pages of a similar quality to that en: - that should allow the natives of simple: to do their own dab work.

So, I think I'm asking if you could generate a list of the most linked to dabs on simple: - in fact, with only 2000, the whole lot ordered by incoming links. That would give a priority list for cleaning up dab pages. Doable? Josh Parris 11:15, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Probably doable. We need the disambigs to all be in a category like Category:All disambiguation pages, for starters. The rest should be straightforward. Not sure if I could go all the way with DPL bot though; it's crucial I be able to filter out all false positives. The BTX disambiguation page

Currently, the subject DAB page assigns "BTX" to an Internet forum for Bruce Springsteen fans and "BTX process" to "a process involving mixtures of Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene".

As background to what I am going to propose, I retired after 60 years of working as a chemical engineer in the petroleum industry. The word "BTX" first began to be used very extensively in the petroleum refining industry in about 1948-1950. At that time, Bruce Springsteen was probably not even yet born or still in diapers ... and there was no Internet. In fact, there were no computers either.

BTX in the petroleum industry is a mixture of chemicals known as Benzene, Tolune and Xylenes (all liquids at typical room temperature and pressure) which are extracted on a large scale from the gasoline (petrol) component known as "catalytic reformate". The extraction is part of the process known as catalytic reforming. There is no such separate process as a "BTX process". See the process flow diagram in the oil refinery article.

I propose or suggest that "BTX" be assigned to "a mixture of Benzene, Toluene and Xylenes" and that "BTX (music") be assigned to the Internet forum for Bruce Springsteen.

As a second choice, I would suggest that "BTX process" be changed to "BTX (chemistry)". As a matter of fact, "BTX process" is currently redirected to benzene which is a very poor work-around since most of the benzene article, by far, is devoted to benzene.

"BTX" is a disambiguation page; the entry on that page for the Bruce Springsteen forum is a piped link to Backstreets Magazine, the article that mentions the forum. The acronym "BTX" is not "assigned" to anything but the disambiguation page itself. WIth respect to the "BTX process" redirect, if an article can be written on this topic you are welcome to write it at "BTX process" or "BTX (chemistry)". Also, it is not particularly significant which use came first, if an earlier use is going to be more obscure as a general-purpose term. There is no general purpose term for BTX; BTX is a disambiguation page, a purely navigational tool to help people find the article they were looking for by offering descriptions of the content to which each link will take them. There is zero chance of anyone being misled to clicking on the Bruce Springsteen page, thinking that the link will take them to the chemical process. As to obscurity, I am sure that Obama, Fukui is not at all obscure to people who live in Japan, but it is still not the primary meaning for the term, just as there is no primary meaning for Mercury (though every chemist knows it to be an element), or to Las Vegas. This takes me back. I used to work for Aristech in Haverhill, Ohio, where they converted benzene into phenol, aniline, and BPA. Nasty stuff. Ohio is lax on environmental regulation, and Aristech took advantage. I remember dragonflies would drop dead in mid-flight, and all the trees on the hill opposite the plant would go brown. My experiences at Aristech helped me decide to move into computer science. I still miss it though; when you stand atop a distillation tower and look out on the plant, when you think about how we make these dangerous, explosive chemicals bend to our will, it's hard not to be impressed with a pride in mankind's abilities.

But all that's beside the point. I agree that BTX and its usefulness in extractive distillation deserves an article, and that BTX process should redirect to your BTX (chemistry) article once it's done. Also, I should point out that BD2412 is correct; BTX is a disambiguation page. I think the confusion came from the way the link to Backstreets Magazine was presented; I've changed that.

I've been out of chemical engineering for a long time, but if you have any questions, or want me to review your work. I would love to help. I've always thought our Chem E articles were weak and am grateful you're willing to help improve them. That being said, you'll have to forgive my slowness in replying from time to time, as regular life is pulling hard at me these days.

Hi there, JaGa! I'm an editor over on the Simple English Wikipedia, and I have a question for you about your tools. We have very few maintenance tools available to us on simple and I seem to remember that your set of tools were very helpful to me when I edited here. So I'm wondering what it would take to be able to use them over there? Can the script be adapted to cross wikis? I realise there's a distinct possibility that you're quite busy with other tasks, so alternatively if you're willing to give me a copy of the source to maintain on simple, that might be easier... How do I find the statistics indicating where users go once they get to U.S. Post Office? Specifically, I would like to know what percent of users reaching that page click over to the United States Postal Service page, as opposed to a specific post office. bd2412 T 19:36, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Wikimedia doesn't track such things at the moment. The GLAMs have been pressing the foundation to start recording such things, but it's a slow behemoth. Most approaches so far have been to derive such things from daily hit counter. — Dispenser 21:03, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

If you really, really need to know, you can put an intervening redirect in between the two and count the hits for the redirect. You may have some trouble defending it 'tho. Josh Parris 03:18, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, something's gone haywire, because the database was updated (which was why The Daily Disambig was able to publish today), but the reports for Disambig Pages with Links and Templates with Disambig Links are not visible. As an aside, I plan to add some additional edits (generated using a spreadsheet) that are likely to have dab issues. I briefly looked into fixing the dab before posting, but it is a major headache and makes future updates problematic. (probably not a great description). It will be easier for me if I post the edit, then let DPL flag it, where I can fix the issues. Is that considered poor form? My preference is to make the edit, then fix the dabs after DPL drops by. Or it just occurred to me, if I make an edit, is it easy to manually invoke dabsolver?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 19:32, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Either would be fantastic. I like the idea of people integrating DPL bot into their workflow. Just let the bot do the work of identifying the dablinks; it justifies the bot's existence by making the task of editing a little easier. Also, though, you can invoke Dab Solver yourself. Just go to the dab solver page and enter your article title. Note that this would work even if the article is in your user space.
