Speedy deletion nomination of Alfredo sciarrotta

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Alfredo sciarrotta requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. My page is been nominated for speedy deletion, but I am confident the subject is notable, as Sciarrotta's work represents a unique style, is displayed in several museums, and was presented as a gift to two American presidents. His contribution to the OSS during WWII is also historically significant. What needs to change? Structure or content? A few questions:

1. I would like to upload images of Alfred Sciarrotta's silversmith work, but I don't believe I am approved to do so. The photos I have were taken by Sciarrotta's daughter who has given me permission to upload them. How do I do this? 2. Would separate sections on Sciarrotta's life and work help to improve the article? 3. I have repeated the same footnote for multiple parts of the article, which I understand is not the preferred format. When I tried a "Named reference" I got an error message. Suggestions? That article primarily needs better sources. WWII history is a topic extremely well-covered; if someone played "a major role in a clandestine Office of Strategic Services (OSS) operation", I'd expect more than just a local newspaper to back up that claim. The same goes for the rather grandiose claims of his artistic success. Regarding your questions:
  1. What we need is evidence that the copyright holder has released the image under a free license that allows everybody to re-use and modify the images for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Permission solely to use the image on Wikipedia is not enough. See WP:Requesting copyright permission for details. Freely licensed images can be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons via their commons:Special:UploadWizard.
  2. Personally I'd say sections would help improve the article, probably one for his government work, one for his artistic career and one for "personal life and death". If we had something on Sciarrotta's parentage, upbringing or education, an "early life" section could be added between the lead and the section on his weapons work. This is merely cosmetics, however, and much less important than the lack of references.
  3. I have tidied up the references with this edit. In short, the first time you use a reference, you can give it a name like this: <ref name="Some name">Text of the footnote</ref> Afterwards you can refer to the same source again with this code: <ref name="Some name" /> The slash at the end is important, though; without it things will get misinterpreted badly, and parts of the content may no longer be displayed correctly.
I'll decline the speedy deletion, but the article may still be nominated for a deletion discussion to establish whether Sciarrotta meets Wikipedia's standards of notability. Huon (talk) 14:31, 15 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
