Jan 6th dispute edit

I see the discussion going on between Dumuzid and TFD, and I would like your opinion. Leaving out Donohoe's statement, let alone other court docs and RS citations showing that there were discussions of storming the capitol by the PB before 1/6, only seems to bolster TFD's previously stated opinion that the discussions never happened and don't exist. Of course article consensus will ultimately determine what goes in, but do you think they are acting in good faith at this point? DN (talk) 01:23, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Darknipples: I see no evidence that The Four Deuces or Dumuzid are not acting in good faith, and any opinions otherwise fly in the face of WP:AGF. I also see no reason why this should be on my talk page rather than at WP:DRN. Can you explain why? JML1148 (talk | contribs) 07:02, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Are we not allowed to ask questions on the moderator's talk page when there is no response from the moderator on the project page? I will strike it then. The reason I asked if you feel they are acting in good faith is because despite your original resolution [1], they continued arguing, adding their own personal stipulation to the dispute that was never approved by you or agreed upon by me, ie "presented at trial". DN (talk) 07:26, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ideally we'd keep everything to DRN, and ping me on DRN if there's a question you have for me. I'm assuming the "original resolution" was when I stated, "Unless I'm missing something, I don't see why this dispute should continue. DN has provided numerous sources that IMO clearly prove that prosecutors alleged planning, especially the first two." The final statement of that comment was a question directly asking TFD to justify the continuation of the dispute. TFD provided a very convincing response, and so the dispute has continued. JML1148 (talk | contribs) 07:32, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Darknipples, I know you have struck it out, but just wanted to say a little more directly than JML did that this is not a great look. If you have a problem with something I say, or the way I conduct myself, you are welcome to address it directly with me--I promise I am neither easily offended nor quick to anger. If you'd simply prefer I stop mucking about in the dispute (again!) then I can do that as well. Cheers. Dumuzid (talk) 17:56, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
On the contrary, I would encourage to to keep participating. I agree with JML118 that your contributions are helpful, I am just frustrated that this keeps getting dragged out by new stipulations and distractions from the actual dispute, which was supposed to simply be about what RS and court docs say. Please forgive me for my impatience and tendency to try and steer the dispute back to my issues. It's my first DRN, so it is also a learning experience for me. By the way, I am taking a break from it today. Cheers. DN (talk) 20:22, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Dancing Harry Cooper edit

Hello I just saw a message you left me a few months ago about my revision on his page...update. The reason I did not source it is that I am the source. I am the one who paid Harry to come out of retirement. First, I hired him to appear at the East Coast Conference Championship game at the Towson Center to support Towson State's team so they could win the conference title and go to the NCAA Tournament. That was one wild night. Then when I was the associate director of the Charm City Classic, a multiple high school tournament which more often than not had the Number 1 ranked team in the country participate, I hired Harry once again to get the crowd into the game and he certainly did that. I really appreciate you contacting me. You know I am not very well skilled at doing too much on the computer even after all these years. Oh, when I say I paid him, I mean I really paid him. I gave him cash for each event. I enjoyed it as much as anyone....and in the case of the Charm City Classic, I was not only the number 2 man to Bill Spotts in the tournament from 92=98 but my business gave away a 1000 dollar scholarship every year and cosponspred the tournament. Once again, Thank You so much!! I worked professionally in sports and media and if I ever add anything, it will be all first hand knowledge so you will know it is me, but I will probably only do that a couple times. I want to do that on the Terry Truax page. Very few knew him better personally and professionally. 160.3.134.69 (talk) 01:05, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

  Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter edit

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  •   Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  •   Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  •   Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

New pages patrol newsletter edit

Hello JML1148,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Invitation to Cornell study on Wikipedia discussions edit

Hello JML1148,

I’m reaching out as part of a Cornell University academic study investigating the potential for user-facing tools to help improve discussion quality within Wikipedia discussion spaces (such as talk pages, noticeboards, etc.). We chose to reach out to you because you have been highly active on various discussion pages .

The study centers around a prototype tool, ConvoWizard, which is designed to warn Wikipedia editors when a discussion they are replying to is getting tense and at risk of derailing into personal attacks or incivility. More information about ConvoWizard and the study can be found at our research project page on meta-wiki.

If this sounds like it might be interesting to you, you can use this link to sign up and install ConvoWizard. Of course, if you are not interested, feel free to ignore this message.

If you have any questions or thoughts about the study, our team is happy to discuss! You may direct such comments to me or to my collaborator, Cristian_at_CornellNLP.

Thank you for your consideration.

-- Jonathan at CornellNLP (talk) 17:59, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Jonathan at CornellNLP: Thank you for the invitation! I've signed up and installed the browser extention.
