Colors in signature edit

You can check out how I did my signature by edited this message to see the coding on my signature. You need to first go under preferences, then on the "user profile" tab, check "Raw signature". Then add your signature in the box above it. Be careful to not get a real long signature, because large ones take a lot of space. You should not add images in your signature. WikiProject Video Games edit

You can find out about that WikiProject at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games. Looking at the WikiProject, you can join by following the instructions at Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games#Participation. You have already joined the WikiProject! Anyone, including non-members, can add an article to its appropriate WikiProject(s) by adding the WikiProject template on the article's talk page. WikiProjects are a great way to meet people with the same interests as you. You can focus on working on improving existing articles with experienced contributors. They are not being used as much as they used to be. A lot of WikiProjects aren't seeing real much discussion anymore because the infrastructure for articles and topics have been laid. I think it's a bad idea to propose a new WikiProject. Formally, you need to find at least 3 regular contributors to create a WikiProject because it takes a fair bit of work to set one up (I helped start several few years ago). There is something lighter called a taskforce that is a subproject of the main WikiProject. I think you shouldn't set up either for such a narrow topic. Different contributors will contribute to different aspects of a WikiProject. Some contributors will like to work on current games on a certain console, others will like to work on old games from a certain time period. You will want to work on racing games. Royalbroil 03:20, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Everyone should be adding articles to WikiProjects! There are very few things that should only be done by an administrator. These are things that would be dangerous in the wrong hands like deleting articles, editing the main page, blocking users, protecting articles for vandalism, etc. Royalbroil 03:45, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Peer reviews edit

I know you're new here. You shouldn't be asking for a peer review on a bunch of articles. That's actually a long somewhat formal process that should only be asked after you have improved the article to near Good Article (GA) criteria, and then usually only one article at a time per contributor. You should have developed the article by adding many citations from reliable sources before you ask for peer reviews. It's not for general comments about the quality of the article. I don't think that any of these articles are anywhere near GA criteria, especially since they are (for the most part) lacking citations. If you want to improve these article, that's what you need to do first. Royalbroil 18:22, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Do you want me to delete them? I don't think that you listed them properly so no one can probably find them anyhow. Add the citations inline is much prefered (to expected) today. Here's how you do it: Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. Royalbroil 18:44, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think that I was wrong about no one finding them. I think the process changed. Either that, or I didn't remember it correctly. In any case, I'm sorry. Royalbroil 20:04, 25 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Modifieds edit

I like that idea for an article! I was wondering how they could all be incorporated in an article which I knew should be written, but you found the right way! As for attribution, all that it means is that I need to have the image description page link back to me, which it does. So you should use the caption to describe each picture and not the source. I have better images of current IMCA modifieds than that Benji LaCrosse image, and I think that I have better pictures of vintage modifieds. These modifieds are from a Milwaukee area modified group, so I doubt they travel all the way down to Macon. I think that I have better pictures of them if you don't mind a closeup of one or two cars instead of 4 cars. A sections or "see also" on Legends car racing would make sense, since they were designed to be scaled down NASCAR modifieds. This picture of Frankie Schneider from the early 1980s would be excellent. There's more even older pictures available. Here's a link to the Commons category. I had been keeping that Commons category only for Northeastern modifieds, but that can be changed if you and I feel it is appropriate.

I'm using this paragraph for ideas to expand what you have written since I don't want to give you edit conflicts. Some tracks like Slinger Super Speedway have their own home grown version Modifieds. I have a book on stock car racing that might have some Modified history. Add the Commons category to the article.

If we do a good job of sourcing this article from reliable sources, we could have a Did You Know article featured on the main page in the section for the best new articles. Does that appeal to you? Royalbroil 17:24, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

All of my flickr pictures with the word "Modified" in them: [1]
Vintage modifieds: [2], [3], [4], [5], 2007 was the final year of these derivatives raced at one track
Another thing to talk about is IMCA's Sport Modifieds [6]. Royalbroil 17:47, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
The #3 Modified was Ken "Mighty Mouse" Marquardt's racecar. He was a Wisconsin legend and probably the best racer in the 1970s. Maybe you remember him. Otherwise he probably had at least 2 cars and maybe one found its way down into Illinois. I think DIRT is DIRT MotorSports [7]. Royalbroil 20:36, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Marquardt raced in the #5 racecar on that picture, so please ignore that comment above. I don't know who drove #3. I looked over the article so far. You should consolidate the references from the Circle Track article into a single reference. I can do it for you. Wikipedia articles are not an acceptable source, but you what you can do is use the source from the sentences in that article to source this article. Royalbroil 03:38, 29 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm very good and very willing to ask for permission on pictures, as long as they located at flickr so that they can be licensed as Creative Commons (other photo websites only have provisions for All Rights Reserved). I get about 50% success. Almost all of my pictures are already license Wikipedia-approved Creative Commons, of course. Don't bother attempting fair use, because I dispute the claim because it is possible to get any modified picture under free use. They'll never stay. Royalbroil 01:02, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

(deindent) If it's alright with you, I'd like to leave the Modified article sit in your sandbox for a little bit. I haven't even started looking for information yet. Too bad that User:Barno hasn't come back from his wikibreak since February, because he has a real solid history of East Coast Modifieds as he used to be a track official at a racetrack there plus he's real knowledgable about racing history.

I have a library book about Wisconsin short track racing history that's due back at the library at around the 6th or 8th. I have a lot of information to get out of that book yet. I borrowed it to work on Alan Kulwicki's article during a failed Featured Article attempt. I found a lot of information about Dick Trickle, Jim Sauter, and Matt Kenseth's early careers that I need to add to Wikipedia before I return it. I'm going to be mainly gone out camping starting tomorrow afternoon until Sunday. After this weekend's done, I want to work on the Modifieds next week.

Singular terms are always prefered for an article's title, so that you could link like Chuck Bown's Modified instead of having to do Chuck Bown's Modified. The plural form can easily be done by adding a letter at the end like A group of Modifieds. I think the article name "Modified" should be a disambiguous page, since the work modified have multiple meanings. Since the article now contains content about a Canadian car, it should not be called Modified racing in the United States. My preference is Modified racing to be consistent with Legends car racing, stock car racing, ice racing, dirt track racing, Sprint car racing, midget car racing, etc. If the article becomes called Modified, then it should be called Modified (racing) since it would be disambiguous.

You are doing a good job on the article. My main constructive comment is that there should be more citations in it, probably a minimum of one per paragraph. There are a few minor issues with tone that I'll do some rewording when I work on it next week (for example $20,000 is expensive in my book!). Otherwise it looks quite solid and it is well-written. I like how there are so many pictures - hopefully we can find more! Royalbroil 19:26, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

$20,000 is cheap, compared to my dad's $10,000 engine....just the engine...or some of the $100,000+ WoO LM's out there. BTW....20k is pretty expensive for me too!!!! JLG 2701 20:44, 2 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Money is relative. I used to pit for a division called Challenger cars.[8] We knocked out the windows on a street Grand Prix, welded in some rollbars in the driver's door and a basic cage, slapped the body with some paint, and raced it to 5th and 3rd place in the points. The roller cost less than $1000 total. We moved up to Street Stock and spent $2000 on a motor and a few thousand for the roller [1].
Anyhow, you asked about "How to identify" section. I think that each section should contain enough to identify each type of modified if possible. A picture of each type would be ideal, but it's not a realistic goal. "Build it and they will come" to quote the movie. I bet people will want to brag about their modified, so pictures will gradually appear. Those Super Modifieds were a local flavor derived from those vintage modifieds and probably don't deserve their own section (maybe a mention). They slowly added wings which got bigger until they reached that point. Royalbroil 04:22, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

(deindent) I don't have time to give justice to the topic, so you can publish it. So far it looks good. I added several sources to your sandbox's talk page, so would you expand it from these sources?

That's cool that we have things in common! I'm impressed that I have gained friends throughout the world because of my help at the Wiki! Royalbroil 23:10, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

The article should be called Modified racing per the many precedents I indicated above. You don't need to use the articles that I found if the information isn't helpful. Others people will help expand the article. Build it and they will come!
I noticed your ITPA article earlier today. It's turning out very well. Be careful about using the official website as a source, as it is not considered a reliable source since official websites can be edited to say anything. You'll probably run into notability issues if you use only their website. I highly recommend building it from other sources. I wonder if the Chicago Tribune, NY Times, ESPN, SPEED TV, or Sporting News have any articles on the ITPA. The way you're building it used to be the way to go at Wikipedia, but too many articles were inaccurate/biased. Wikipedia got lots of criticism, and decided to require better independent sources. Accuracy got a lot better from what I hear. Royalbroil 03:36, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I changed the Super DIRTcar Series links on the Modified racing article to red links because I'm working on an article for the series. The draft can be found at User:Royalbroil/Sandbox2. Royalbroil 18:08, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I added a new lead photograph of a vintage modified to the Modified racing article. Please review the caption. Royalbroil 03:50, 20 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Something was wrong with Commons. I don't understand. I went there and this (and another) image wasn't there. All of a sudden they showed up here at the English Wikipedia after I tried to redo the image name (on both articles). Whatever happened, it's working now. This image was from a set that my Circle Track Racing magazine photographer friend Ted Van Pelt used in a modified article in 1987. This one didn't make the magazine, but it is good enough. Herald and Review 100 edit

Good job on the article. I enjoyed the quotes. I'm not surprised it got rained out, I saw the rain in your area on the radar. It's been awesome here since Wednesday night, and the weatherman says it's going to be great until Sunday. I'm glad I'm out camping (for the most part). It's not real far from home (less than a half hour), so I'm coming home most nights to sleep in my own bed. Royalbroil 03:35, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:NTPAlogo.jpg) edit

Thanks for uploading Image:NTPAlogo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Wow, no article on the National Tractor Pull Association until now. How sad. Thanks for starting one! Royalbroil 12:36, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hate to ask, but... edit

(You said) Could you please delete the page User:JLG 2701/itpa (it has been published to wiki), and move the history from User:JLG 2701/NTPA to National Tractor Pullers Association, then delete User:JLG 2701/NTPA? Thank-you in advance!!

Also....I asked for a pic of Justin Allgaier on Flikr, let's see how my luck holds. JLG 2701 00:41, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

There is no article history on either article, which means that you moved the content when you started the article. That means there's nothing to move. Phew, I dodged a bullet. I don't know if I know how to do history moves. I have deleted both sandbox articles. Royalbroil 04:00, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Small articles on Illinois settlements edit

Hi JLG - good to see some new small articles on places in illinois. Could I ask that if you make any more youa dd Illinois-geo-stub to the bottom of them (like I've done with Zenobia, Illinois)? That way they are easier for other editors working on illinois articles to find. Thanks - and keep up the good work! Grutness...wha? 01:03, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Don't worry - you misunderstand me - I simply meant add the template to any new ones you make from now on - I've already added it to the ones you've just done :) Actually, there are separate stub templates for every county in illinois, but I can't remember exactly how they're named - the basic Illinois-geo-stub one is close enough to help, though. Grutness...wha? 01:14, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
BTW, the standard format for a community article is to say what it is and the county/state/country, and list its location later. I'm not unhappy :-) just wanting to let you know. Nyttend (talk) 01:43, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, also, the usual way it's done is, if a community is in more than one county, to go simply with the state stub, rather than any county stub, so there's no need to do anything to Zenobia. Nyttend (talk) 01:46, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
You're griping at me about that...when you were the one that did it?? Gee.....Thanks!!! JLG 2701 01:56, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

(deindent)If anyone else wants to gripe, go ahead. I'm now going to stop trying to write, since either no one wants/needs the info I can write about, or else they want to do it THEIR way, and do it before I get a chance to align my articles with the rest of wiki. JLG 2701 01:54, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry: not trying to complain, but to help you. Nyttend (talk) 02:03, 27 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Userboxes edit

I have only deleted pages that were either in the speedy deletion category or were specifically requested. Yours must have gotten into the category somehow. When I see a userpage in the category, I verify that no other editor placed it there. Checking on the history of your page, I see that only you have edited it. Therefore, there must have been some confusion. Regardless, deepest apologies for any mistake and you'll find that User:JLG 2701/Userboxes has been restored as per your request. Mmm - Chili bowl edit

I see that you're planning to write the article. I've thought a lot about writing that article too. I've done lots of midget articles, so I'd like to help. I can think of some decent independent sources, especially the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame driver pages on their website. Lots of great drivers won that race. Maybe we could collaborate to get a WP:DYK article? Maybe even an April Fool's Day DYK article with a play on the soup reference?? The normal 5 day limit for article age gets waved and it includes articles from the prior year. I've been accused of being the admin "in charge" of the April Fool's Day page. Royalbroil 03:21, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I knew there was a great action shot of Tony Stewart in his article, so I added it. I need to copyedit and expand the article. Right now, it reads like a promotional press release from the track with all of the awesomeness of the clay, etc. I bet if you posted it right now it probably would get speedy deleted as a promotion. No insult to you intended. Royalbroil 21:15, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I re-read it again and it isn't as bad as I remembered. Some of the middle needs to go, but there's definitely some excellent parts. The list of blue-linked winners at the bottom would probably make sure that the article wouldn't be speedy deleted. Give me some time to look it over - I need to be primarily working off-line for the next day. Maybe late tonight or if I want a break from it. Royalbroil 22:41, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I worked on it during breaks and late night. Do you think it's ready to move? Anything else to add? Royalbroil 12:42, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Can you think of any crazy off-the-wall "facts" that we could use for the article on April Fool's Day Did You Know? Something carefully worded to be true yet people will all take it the wrong way. Maybe something about Tony Stewart hungry for the Chili Bowl? Royalbroil 12:47, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm a thought - ...that HBO televises a pay-per-view special with midgets in the Chili Bowl? Royalbroil 12:53, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I moved it to mainspace and it's now active at Chili Bowl. Do you want me to delete the temporary page User:JLG_2701/chili bowl? I proposed the hook for April Fool's, and I don't expect either of us to hear anything until then. Are you going to work up an article on Tim? Royalbroil 01:42, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

(DEINDENT) I forgot to answer your question - I never heard of POWRi. I don't know if anyone sanctions the Chili Bowl - I assumed it was unsanctioned with the wide variety of drivers from various sanctioning bodies - even different midget sanctioning bodies like USAC, BMARA (Angell Park Speedway relatively near me in Wisconsin), and ARDC on the East Coast.

Most Wikipedia articles are cold hard facts without stories. It's the format of most encyclopedias. Mainly the best articles like Good and Featured articles have that extra touch. If you do end up calling him up, ask him to give you a direction to head for looking for information. Maybe he could copy some newspaper or magazine article to send to you. I've done that in the past and it was very helpful for the article's subject to send you the very best stuff on them. It is reliable information since it is printed by someone else! Tim Wilkerson edit

He should easily be notable enough to warrant an article like any other NHRA driver (especially those who won an event). Some reliable sources from the first page at google: [9], [10] (especially for the quotes), [11], ... Plenty of material to write a high quality DYK article. The Funny Car points leader should have an article. It shows how much Wikipedia lacks drag racing fans. I'm not a fan and wrote most drag racing driver articles that exist right now. I have lots of great pictures from the Top 50 drivers (2001) that are just waiting for an article. Royalbroil 18:41, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Since you didn't seem very interested, I thought about starting the article. Then I saw that you have something started in your sandbox. So what are you thinking now? I found a Creative Commons Attribution picture at flickr which is usable [12]. Do you know how to upload it? Do you want to try uploading it? Royalbroil 17:27, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Looks like someone beat you to the punch - they created his article on October 9. You can use your content to expand the article. It has a bunch of maintenance tags. There sure were a lot of notable drivers who used to race with you! Royalbroil 22:00, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Mid America Off Road Association edit

I deleted your user subpage. This article looks in good shape, although I recommend adding several independent sources to make sure that it doesn't get delete. You might be surprised to hear that NASCAR driver Tighe Scott's article got speedy deleted last week by people who don't understand racing. I enjoyed reading the article, especially the pictures! Royalbroil 02:51, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wow, MAORA had lots of drivers that made it national. I saw most of these drivers race this year at Crandon in the Borg-Warner World Championships. I saw Scott Taylor win his second Borg-Warner in his 2WD trophy truck and I have the program to use as a reference. It was my favorite event of the year in over 40 events at 30 tracks. My first races at Crandon and first WSORR event. It wasn't my first off-road races, as I went to several SODA/CORR races at Road America back in the early 90s. I even pitted once for a SODA class 11 buggy (and I still have the wristband used as the pit pass). Jimmie Johnson, Brendan Gaughan, and Walker Evans raced. They graded away the track and put a karting track there called Brigg and Stratton Motorplex. I caught SODA's season finale race a year after everyone bolted to CORR at Chilton, Wisconsin. They talked at the event about disbanding SODA but they decided to keep it running for the following year. I haven't heard a thing since. I'll have to make Crandon next year - it was AWESOME! Maybe I'll make one of the Oshkosh days too. Royalbroil 04:00, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disambiguous Butch Hartman (disambiguation) edit

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Butch Hartman (disambiguation), by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Butch Hartman (disambiguation) is a disambiguation page that only points to a single article, or no articles at all.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Butch Hartman (disambiguation), please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. I caught the Traxxas TORC Series sportsman/grassroots event at Oshkosh which caused me to check out what happened with CORR and WSORR. Another off-season of wild changes! In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
