Quick question

Hi JJMC89. May I please know how you hide usernames in edit summaries such as this? Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 08:53, 31 December 2021 (UTC)

(tpw)zzuuzz there are certain scripts (such as this one or this one) that once installed allow one to add custom edit summaries when doing a rollback. I'm guessing JJMC89 uses one such script. Sro23 (talk) 22:30, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
Yea, there are a few scripts that allow you to change the rollback summary or provide other summaries. I use m:User:Hoo man/Scripts/Smart rollback and m:User:WhitePhosphorus/all-in-one. That specific edit was done by the latter. — JJMC89 00:03, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
Super, thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 13:04, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

"Hinduism in LATVIA" listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has identified a potential problem with the redirect Hinduism in LATVIA and has thus listed it for discussion. This discussion will occur at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2021 December 28#Hinduism in LATVIA until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Bot error

Hi, this might already be addressed but wanted to give a heads up that on 23 Oct 2020, JJMC89 bot III deleted three template talk page redirects as "G8: Redirect to deleted page Category:LGBT anarchists" when those pages did not redirect there. Thought it might be a weird quirk potentially worth looking into. Best wishes in the New Year, czar 20:01, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

@Czar: Thanks for letting me know. I couldn't find any previous report of this issue. The error was caused by the WikiProject template on those redirects having a link to the category at the time they were deleted. It put a workaround in place until I can properly fix it. Hi JJMC89. Maybe you can help figure this out? -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:39, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, Marchjuly. I found the cause and replied there. — JJMC89 19:42, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for sorting things out. I would've never guessed that was the issue. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:12, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

Tyrone Guthrie

Hi, I see you have removed the photos of Tyrone Guthrie from Edinburgh International Festival but not from Tyrone Guthrie. How does this work? I am confused. Kleinzach 15:28, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi. I didn't remove it. Did you read the bot's edit summary and the policy linked in it? — JJMC89 00:37, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
May I have a simple answer? I am not familiar with this policy. Kleinzach 14:39, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
I'm not going to explain the entire policy to you. If you have a specific question, let me know. — JJMC89 00:09, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

9th January licenses and copyrights for book covers

I think all of them are valid as I have added thousands of book covers over the years without any issues GrahamHardy (talk) 00:04, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

They only have a non-free use rationale but are missing the required license template. — JJMC89 00:06, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
Hi I think they should now be OK, sorry for not spotting them, Thanks GrahamHardy (talk) 01:50, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Thousand "District" moves needed

Can I submit bulk move requests to your bot? See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Southeast Asia#Districts for what we're up to. Dicklyon (talk) 05:07, 10 January 2022 (UTC)

Tol filed a BRFA for this. — JJMC89 04:44, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Bronco Nagurski

Thanks for adjusting placement of the Reproduction Number for File:Bronko Nagurski.jpg, from the Chicago Daily News negatives collection, Chicago Historical Society. I don't know why that already-visible line had to be moved within the short metadata paragraph, but perhaps there was a reason. Just prior to that you had deleted that photo from a page noting Nagurski's collegiate career, List of fraternities and sororities at the University of Minnesota#Traditions, but with the metadata correctly showing the Reproduction Number, fulfilling the requirements of the source, that deletion seems moot. Restored. Jax MN (talk) 14:51, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Use in the list article does not satisfy WP:NFCC criteria 3 or 8. — JJMC89 17:49, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
I believe it does. Usage is encouraged by the source. The image is very small, at 18KB. As to context, this athlete is routinely cited as emblematical or even foremost of many similar campus heroes of that era. Inclusion of the image helps convey that point. Graphically, it makes the article more attractive, and draws readers through the page. Now that a second rationale has been added to the image file, are your copyright concerns resolved? Jax MN (talk) 18:01, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
What the source encourages is irrelevant. Usage must satisfy our policy. No, my concerns are not resolved. You don't need an image to convey that "Bronco Nagurski was a prominent athlete from the University of Minnesota, who was also a member of a fraternity on the campus." — JJMC89 18:18, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Yo bro thanks so much bro

My talk page was ugly as hec and you fixed it bro thank you so much man what would I do without you Jaxophone1 (talk) 19:26, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

File:Steaua București.svg Page linked here, please can your bot stop removing — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.0.27.91 (talk) 18:56, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

The removal was correct since there wasn't a non-free use rationale. — JJMC89 01:17, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

JJMC89 Bot edit at Chris Foss

I added 3 NFCC images at Chris Foss in what seemed to be in-line with policy. JJMC89 Bot has removed 2 of these, but left 1. The edit summery left me none the wise as to why (surely all are fine or none are?) --Project Osprey (talk) 17:27, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

It was a false negative. All three should have been removed. I see that you've restored two of them. I don't think they meet criterion 8. — JJMC89 01:15, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
No? I have to disagree. I think they satisfy criterion 8 better there than they do on the other pages. While appealing, cover art doesn't really increase readers' understanding of music or writing - but illustrations definitely increase the readers' understanding of the work of an illustrator.--Project Osprey (talk) 10:20, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

IRC request

Evening,

Not sure who else seems to approve these but your the only name on recent request, have had a request for channel access open since the 30/12/21 not sure if I missed something/its been overlooked/youve been up to your eyeballs in something and not had a chance. Have I missed anything off or is it just pending so to speak. Amortias (T)(C) 19:26, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

@Amortias: I may have missed it over the end-of-year holidays. It is done now. — JJMC89 19:49, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

NPOV categories

Hello, JJMC89,

I don't know what the issue is with deleting all of these maintenance categories but Fastily deleted them all two days ago and AnomieBot just recreated them the next day. Liz Read! Talk! 03:27, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Liz. See Special:PermaLink/1066978012#NPOV disputes categories for the background. They shouldn't get recreated again now. — JJMC89 03:30, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
I appreciate the link. As a perennial category watcher, I was confused by what was going on, especially when an editor came to WP:REFUND asking for them all to be restored. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 03:51, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Request for undeletion of articles about Dutch MPs

Hi there! I filed a request for undeletion at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion#Jan Paternotte (and others) yesterday, but was told to contact you (the deleting admin) about this. Despite having been created by a confirmed sockpuppet of a banned user, I would like to have these articles restored, as they are useful additions to Wikipedia that can be further improved by other editors. Hope you can help me out with this. Best, — Ætoms [talk] 13:19, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

  Not done I won't restore the work of a banned user. — JJMC89 09:49, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

removal of image from Shoreline School District in my sandbox

Hi, I saw your removal of an image in my sandbox copy of Shoreline School District -- but the version in my sandbox is the same as what's already in the live version of the article, which is the image located here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Shoreline_School_District_Logo.png . I appreciate the work to keep Wikipedia clean and I'm eager to learn what I should've done differently when cloning the article into my sandbox. Thanks! Kaylea Champion (talk) 21:40, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Following up to myself here -- I think I've mostly figured it out; it looks like the issue is that the logo as it's posted is under a fair use exemption that includes a provision for minimal (one-instance) use in mainspace. The relevant bit of the rules that the bot is enforcing is this one -- "A file with a valid non-free-use rationale for some (but not all) articles it is used in will not be deleted. Instead, the file should be removed from the articles for which it lacks a non-free-use rationale, or a suitable rationale added." -- i.e. that's the reason for deletion. I will update our instructional materials to caution folks about this issue; for WikiEdu students we have them copy/paste into the sandbox to keep accidents from happening in mainspace. Thanks again :) Kaylea Champion (talk) 22:02, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
It is true that there is no rationale present meaning use does not satisfy WP:NFCC#10c. Even if one were added, use in a sandbox does not satisfy WP:NFCC#9: non-free media may only be used in articles. — JJMC89 09:54, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

removal of image File:Dr. Sonia Roca (29Abril2013).jpg

The image has been removed for (F7: Violates non-free content criterion #1) However it does meet fair use criteria as it is part of promotional material for Universidad Del Pacífico. HarveyPrototype (talk) 18:47, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

Fair use and the English Wikipedia's non-free content policy are not the same. The latter is intentionally stricter. It does not satisfy the first criterion since a freely licensed photo could replace it. — JJMC89 02:31, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

Whoops!

Please thank your bot for catching the non-free image I accidentally left on my subpage. Bobo. 11:10, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

JJMC89 bot III category updates

Should the category edits by JJMC89 bot III be labeled with a b for bot edits? Maybe this was intentionally not the case. The reason I ask is really for draft space edits. I'm not sure if FireflyBot and SDZeroBot use this at all when sending G13 notifications or populating User:SDZeroBot/G13 soon sorting, respectively, to differentiate bot edits from human edits. Population of this category as well: Category:AfC G13 eligible soon submissions. Courtesy pings @Firefly and SD0001:. Not a huge deal, just curious. -2pou (talk) 21:47, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

The edits are marked as bot edits. — JJMC89 02:55, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
Hmm... You're right, but this is kind of weird... You may not know since this looks more widespread, but while we're on the topic: Do you know if there's a preferences setting that might prevent me from being able to see both mb tags in certain places? Everything I see on Special:Contributions/JJMC89_bot_III is marked m but not b. And if I click the history of a page with a recent change it is again m but not b, likewise with the diff view (Special:Diff/1068027882, for example). To see both mb tags, I have to see that change in my watchlist (or similarly on the "Recent Changes"). Any ideas? I just now see that the page history legend does not include b. -2pou (talk) 18:13, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
The indicator is only available for recent changes (and derivatives such as the watchlist). It is not permanently stored in page histories or contributions. — JJMC89 18:35, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks! -2pou (talk) 19:02, 26 January 2022 (UTC)
