Ishmael Mayhew

edit

Ishmael Mayhew is a Tallahassee native who attended Florida State University Schools (FSUS) and is a current sophomore at Tallahassee Community College. During his academic career, Ishmael struggled with a specific learning disability in mathematics and a visual space disorder. Along with these academic challenges Ishmael faced the difficulty of never knowing his father as well as being distant with his mother and being raised by his grandmother, Fernita Martin. Ishmael’s grandmother always told him that, “The Lord gave everybody something” and these words force him to look for the things that he does well. In the summer of 2006 Ishmael received the American Legion Boys’ State Two-Plus-Two Full-Tuition Scholarship to Tallahassee Community College and Florida State University. Upon graduating from TCC, Ishmael will attend the College of Communication at FSU where he will major in Public Relations/Advertising with a possible minor in Political Science to pursue a career as a publicist. Ishmael has participated in an annual internship to help him progress by working closely with the Detroit Lions Executive Event Coordinator and will be participating again this summer. Ishmael has also gained experience through working with the Tallahassee Community College family as a work-study student where he functioned as an office assistant in the Human Resources Department. Mayhew has also benefited greatly from participating in an extensive number of volunteer projects that include Christmas Connection family volunteer project, 7-year volunteer with Children’s Medical Services by providing informative literature on children’s healthcare, working as a Relay for Life liaison and a current American Legions Boys’ State Counselor for summer 2008. At Boys State Ishmael became a Senate member, Head of Department of Transportation and also served on the Governor’s “Little Cabinet”. Ishmael found it necessary to give back to the program that greatly helped him by being a Boys State Counselor. Ishmael currently serves on the SGA Executive Board as Secretary for Tallahassee Community College and has felt immediately connected with TCC when he first stepped on its campus lawn. Ishmael feels as though it is important to be actively involved everywhere you are and everywhere you’ve been and is thankful for organizations such as the Alumni Association for helping make it possible for students such as Ishmael to function and learning in an adequate educational environment. --Ishmay7 (talk) 23:11, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
