Many thanks, Daino, and sorry for the late response. The off-duty supervisor and I got our son dressed up like a polar bear to help hand out candy. He enjoyed all the attention :) Ishdarian 23:35, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
Nice! That sounds like a lot of fun. I had to work(swings) Halloween and I kept hearing reports of parents losing their kids on base; which always baffled me... because how do you lose your own kid(s)? —  dainomite   02:10, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
The only thing I could think of is a recently PCS'd family lets their kids out in the housing area without supervision. Other than that, no clue. Ishdarian 02:17, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, not sure. But, they were always found right away so thats good. —  dainomite   02:21, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
Well, yeah, but I'd hate to be the controller taking the report of a missing kid. Ishdarian 02:24, 4 November 2013 (UTC)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. Mate I need SERIOUS help

Im trying to post it to be public, please help — Preceding unsigned comment added by CalebTekeen (talkcontribs) 04:10, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi Caleb. I took a look at the info you had added and, unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the subject of your article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline. I suggest not posting the material until he meets the criteria. Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear. Ishdarian 04:25, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
can you help me revise it? im trying to promote myself.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CalebTekeen (talkcontribs) 04:48, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
(ping). That's what I figured. Wikipedia doesn't exist to promote new and upcoming artists. All articles should be reliably sourced. Like I said, I've taken a look, and there isn't much I could do to revise it since it doesn't meet GNG. Give it time. If you end up blowing up and become the next Psy, then I'm sure someone will create an article about you. Ishdarian 04:57, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

List of Tor hidden services -- Reverted to stable version?

Hi,

Sorry for this very long message, but I have a lot of questions about what it's okay to contribute, and what the boundaries are on advertising and promotion, versus normal inherent human bias.

I understand why you deleted the Torhost.net Hidden Wiki page, even though I disagreed.

However I don't understand why you reverted all the changes I made to the List of Tor hidden services. You said something about "reverting to a stable version".

I never had any stability problems as far as it worked on my computer. I can give you screenshots of how it was supposed to look (it came up as intended on my computer).

I make a point of formatting wiki text correctly, and it took me several revisions (mostly previews) to get it to display 100% correctly on my computer--so I was wondering if you would let me know what the problem was on your computer relating to "stability". I can fix the code.

If I fix the code, is it OK to revert it back to the changes I made? Please tell me what needs to be fixed.

I think I made a number of important changes, namely adding several hidden sites and their URLs, and adding warnings about how to check the sources of a .onion URL to make sure it's not a hacking/phishing/scamming site.

Before my edits the page had *no* .onion URLs, which makes it a pretty useless page since its title is "List of Tor hidden services" and "list" implies there should be something listed. I hope you agree.

I'm also wondering why Wikipedia appears to have blacklisted all .onion URLs. I can understand one possible reason why, since anyone can edit it and replace valid URLs with phishing URLs.

But I described that clearly in the warning I gave in Section 1 of the page (which no longer exists as I wrote it) and told people explicitly that they should check the .onion URL against a trusted site such as my own torhost.net.

(Why should my website be considered a "reliable source"? Because if you look at the links on my site, you'll find that virtually all of them work and are non-phishing, non-scamming, non-hacking, whereas the other common directories like TorDir and the Hidden Wiki have only about 30% working links; not to mention being filled with child porn links [as well as scams and occasional malware].)

Therefore I believe my site should be considered a reputable enough source to allow me to cite it in Wikipedia articles as a reliable source of .onion URLs. (Unlike Wikipedia, the Tor hidden service URLs which I contributed to the Torhost.net Hidden Wiki are all on protected pages and I am currently one of only two administrators, and I am willing to take full legal accountability for the absence of hacking/phishing/scamming URLs on the Torhost.net directory.)

Please tell me where this stands in terms of Wikipedia policy.

Because, as I mentioned on the talk page that got deleted, there is NO "objective" source of Tor hidden service URLs---you always, and invariably, have to trust the author of the directory. As a directory, my directory is no worse than the "reliable" directories TorDir and The Hidden Wiki, and is in fact considerably better--we have much less content, because we don't post anything we haven't verified, unless we explicitly warn that it hasn't been verified.

The List of Tor hidden services page (rightfully) had a warning at the top about there not being any sources to the list of hidden services. As well as there being no .onion URLs, that pretty much put an end to the usefulness of the page. I added my own directory as a source because it's actually the one I use personally. I could have used the Hidden Wiki as a source, or TorDir, but like I said, these sources are not as reliable as my directory. I don't mean to be self-promoting. At no point did I make the claim that torhost.net is the only reliable source of hidden services. Just one. Other authors are free to use their own sources, as long as they are reliable. And as Wikipedia contributors, we should be free to choose our own sources based on the best of our knowledge and ability as to what's reliable.

I realize that citing your own website as a source wouldn't fly for other articles, but we're dealing with TOR, and has to call for an exception to Wikipedia's normal policies on reliable sources. Who else are you going to trust? The Hidden Wiki, where you might accidentally click on child porn? Nothing is that reliable. Hence the very large warning/disclaimer I gave at the top of the page under the revision I posted.

Also I wanted to know what I am allowed to say about the Torhost.net Hidden Wiki. Everything I say is going to be biased, since I put together much of the wiki. I personally believe in my heart that it is in fact better than TorDir and OnionDir (not as a wiki, but as far as being a reliable source; I freely admit we have much less content). But in reliability, our site is, to my estimation, 90-95% non-hacking/phishing/scamming sites, whereas TorDir and THW are at best 40-50% (if you've been on the Hidden Wiki lately, you can see that the moderators have marked as much as 8/10 of their sites as DOWN in some sections).

Sooner or later (if I'm at all successful as a website manager) the Torhost.net site will become popular enough that it will be linked to in several places on Wikipedia, by plenty of people, not just me. At that point there will be a empty article about it, and somebody's going to create it again--not necessarily me.

So I'm just wondering what I can say as far as providing the public with an accurate summary of what the site is, what it isn't, and what its strengths and weaknesses are. Obviously I'm going to say it's more reliable than TorDir, but this is not promotion, it's a fact, which you can verify yourself by going to TorDir and seeing how many of the links work (and maybe finding out how many links contain surprise child porn, despite the pedophile filter being enabled by default.) I'm perfectly willing to admit that Torhost.net is inferior to THW and TorDir in many ways, such as the size of the community, and the shear number of links (not counting how many are reliable). Summary of my questions for you

So,

  • please enlighten me as to what the boundaries on what is legitimate contribution versus human bias versus shameless self-promotion, regarding the (former) page Torhost.net Hidden Wiki.
  • And also tell me what stability problems there were in the revisions I made to List of Tor hidden services, and if it's OK to undo your reversion if I can fix them.
  • And, finally, let me know if it's OK to post TOR .onion URLs in the List of Tor hidden services, and if I can use my own site as a "source" vouching for the legitimacy of those URLs, or if I have to use more established (but less reliable) "sources" for these URLs like The Hidden Wiki or TorDir.
    • I understand that, since they are blacklisted for linking purposes, it might be against Wikipedia policy to post TOR URLs at all. If this is the case, I am not aware of it, and Wikipedia would be making a huge mistake.
      • (Technically that could be good for Torhost.net, since it eliminates a major competitor, ;), but I was really hoping Wikipedia would be willing to host at least a rudimentary list of Tor hidden services, for the benefit of the public--even though it makes the site I built much less necessary for people to use.)

Quick Reply with Question about Speedy Deletion

Hi Ishdarian,

I just received your note on the page I just tried to create about Alteryx. I figured the startup had been around for 3 years and it was odd that there wasn't a page about it. So I used materials I found off Google to create the page based on the template I've seen other companies use. Was there something wrong with the way I wrote it? Would love to learn more about how to contribute in a useful way.

K8fr0st — Preceding unsigned comment added by K8fr0st (talkcontribs) 05:19, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback, Ishdarian! For some reason I had it in my head that we had to quote a reputable reference so as not to take on any bias. I was using the cited works as what was essentially a bibliography like you would for a research paper. I'll definitely read over the article you sent and I'll play around with it some more in the future. Really appreciate the time you took to point me in the right direction. — Preceding unsigned comment added by K8fr0st (talkcontribs) 05:40, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

Ping. You're right; we do need reliable sources, but we also don't want to copy the material word-for-word unless we are using direct quotes. Ishdarian 05:46, 20 November 2013 (UTC)

I see that you have marked 411staff page for deletion. Please see. 411staff is founded for a social cause to eliminate poverty among low-income workers. 411staff is started with a mission to organize the unorganized sector in developing countries. There are so many websites I see which are listed in Wikipedia I would appreciate if you can let me know on what basis you happened to categorize this as a promotional entry. I would be great full if you can rethink your decision and list back 411staff.com on Wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.126.245.93 (talk) 03:58, 26 November 2013 (UTC)
