Copyright

Sorry to bring this up again, but Terence Fox bears more than a passing resemblance to the ODNB entry.[1] I'm back off to Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems#ODNB concerns. Have you read the previous discussions there which led to a total rewrite of your the article on Amalie von Wallmoden, Countess of Yarmouth? -- Testing times (talk) 12:52, 6 November 2008 (UTC) [modified to correct my mistake -- Testing times (talk) 18:23, 6 November 2008 (UTC)]

Hi, Ironholds. Perhaps you could join us at WT:CP so that we can be sure we're all on the same page with this? Paraphrasing to avoid infringement can be a challenge (and a pain in the neck, honestly), and we want to be sure that we're getting sufficient distance from our sources that we don't run the risk of getting Wikipedia into trouble. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:01, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

I am sorry, that was my mistake. You were not the author of the old version of Amalie von Wallmoden, Countess of Yarmouth, that was User:Craigy144. My apologies for confusing you with him. The page history for the old version has been deleted, but that is not a good excuse. I should have checked my facts again before mentioning it. Again, my apologies.

However, if you remember, I did point you to the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems#ODNB concerns about Amalie von Wallmoden, Countess of Yarmouth, in which I mentioned a few of your recent new articles, Falkes de Breauté, William Tresham and Alan Garrett Anderson. I am still concerned these and several other of your new articles seem, to my eyes, to be essentially copies of the copyright text of the ODNB. Not word-for-word cutting and pasting, and not plagiarism (as you clearly give the source) but still a substantial taking of the basic form and structure of the original.

I'm sorry if you think reviewing some of your work amounts to "wikistalking". To be honest with you, I am worried that some of your work may amount to copyright infringement. -- Testing times (talk) 17:59, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps you don't want to hear it, but I have nominated Alan Garrett Anderson and Terence Fox at Wikipedia:Copyright problems. -- Testing times (talk) 14:33, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
OK - let us see what they think of those two. At the risk of further accusations of "wikistalking", I have also looked at some of the other articles you have written recently and compared them to the ODNB entries they cite as sources. Some are much better on this score: for example, William Henry Lang and Frederick Gugenheim Gregory are less close to the ODNB originals - more of an attempt to summarise the effect of the original text than to quote a slightly paraphrased version of it. -- Testing times (talk) 14:56, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Court of Common Pleas (England)

Hi, you only have a day left on hold with this. I've been pretty lenient with time on this due to my busy schedule as well, so you've had quite a bit of time to fix concerns raised. If you could, would you have a look? I'll have to fail it if it's not fixed, and it would be such a shame because it has great potential. Wikimedia UK v2.0

Hello! Thanks for showing an interest in Wikimedia UK v2.0. Formation of the company is currently underway under the official name "Wiki UK Limited", and we are hoping to start accepting membership in the near future. We have been drawing up a set of membership guidelines, determining what membership levels we'll have (we plan on starting off with just standard Membership, formerly known as Guarantor Membership, with supporting membership / friends scheme coming later), who can apply for membership (everyone), what information we'll collect on the application form, why applications may be rejected, and data retention. Your input on all of this would be appreciated. We're especially after the community's thoughts on what the membership fee should be. Please leave a message on the talk page with your thoughts.

Also, we're currently setting up a monthly newsletter to keep everyone informed about the to-be-Chapter's progress. If you would like to receive this newsletter, please put your username down on this page.

Thanks again. Mike Peel (talk) 19:54, 8 November 2008 (UTC) (Membership Secretary, Wikimedia UK [Proposed])

Cardiacs

Hey,

i thought you would be the right person to ask about audio samples, can you stick 4 or five on the Cardiacs page, or maybe one tune from each album, for readers who don't know mucha bout them to get a sample? I would, i just am so shite with computers. Could you?

A photo of the band in the info box at the side might be nice too, a photo of tim smith on the tim smith page would also be lovely. Could you do that please?

Thanks

Hi - this is MY interpretation - others may differ

I think that if you take a massive list/article with no/little text and add 1500 new characters then TICK. If you take the 1500 chars out of the list then NO. If you expand text x5 with an unchanged list then TICK.... if you steal the material out of the list then NO. Hope that helps. Don't Bite The Newcomers

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we must insist that you assume good faith while interacting with other editors. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

Patrick David Wall

Given my comments on some of your previous articles, I just wanted to say that I think this article is excellent. I have no concerns about it, and I hope you can see the difference yourself. Similarly, from your comments at User_talk:Moonriddengirl#Alan_Garrett_Anderson, I trust you appreciate the difference there too now.

You may have noticed that Pat Wall also has an ODNB entry - [2] - which seems to draw principally from the newspaper obituaries, like your article. The ODNB has further details in some areas which could be incorporated. In addition to the three obituaries you cite, it also refers to an obituary in The Times (15 August 2001) and a website (http://www.ppaonline.co.uk/patwall.html) which seems to be a deadlink now; if you can find either of these, they may also add some further details.

One request - please could you try to avoid saying "apparent[ly]" when reporting the events of a person's life. It occurs five times in Patrick_David_Wall#Return_to_Britain! -- Testing times (talk) 13:12, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Sorting of names in tables

I think you have to wrap each name in Template:Sortname, and assign it a sortkey in there. Then the table will display the name but can be sorted on last name. Choess (talk) 14:15, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Copyright

I see User:Moonriddengirl has rewritten Alan Garrett Anderson and Terence Fox. I think this demonstrates that my concern was not entirely misplaced.

As I mentioned above, I have looked at some of your other recent articles. James Feast, Philip Cohen, Tomas Lindahl, John Frank Davidson and John Vavasour seem fine, and Frederick Gugenheim Gregory, Ernest Kennaway, William Henry Lang and Peter Victor Danckwerts are just about ok, I think. However, I have just nominated Robert of Thornham and Charles Ansell at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2008 November 19.

I think there are about 40 other articles that will need to be reviewed, dating back to Simon of Pattishall in September. Before then, I see you created a series of MP stubs, which should be less of a concern. -- Testing times (talk) 18:16, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Wiki UK Ltd Membership applications now invited!

Hello,

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Wiki UK Limited is now inviting membership applications! You can download the application form in PDF format from meta:Image:Wiki_UK_Ltd_membership_application_form.pdf

Information is given on the form about membership fees (£12/year standard, £6 for concessions); these need to be paid by cheque initially, although we hope to accept other forms of payment in the future. Applications should be submitted to me at the address given on the form. If you have any queries about the application process, please let me know.

We will formally start accepting members once we have a bank account, as we cannot process membership fees until that time. We will be submitting our application for a bank account in the very near future, and we hope to have this set up by the end of December at the latest.

Thank you for your support so far; I look forward to receiving your membership application.

High Sheriffs

Not lately, I'm afraid; rather busier in this part of the semester, and I like to have large chunks of time to do the High Sheriff editing. (Sit down, open up 10 Gazettes in tabbed browsing, and work my way down the line for each shrievalty — it takes a while to set up.) Maybe later this month. Sometimes I wonder if there shouldn't be a wikiproject for British officialdom, but declaring of a project isn't actually going to increase my free time, alas. Choess (talk) 01:57, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Heck, you could probably spend months churning out stubs for obsolete writs in the British legal system. For some reason I remember reading a book on the Exchequer including, I think, a Tudor treatise on its operation, which exists in several manuscripts; it describes the writ of quietus est, which allowed people to be discharged from the Exchequer without having to go through the tally system. In one copy of the manuscript, the sentence ends with "...which is a great abuse." Explains a lot about the Exchequer, really. Anyway, I'd be happy to look over the Armenian monarchs when they're tidied. Choess (talk) 02:14, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Ah yes, the writ of quominus. I just have this wonderful picture of some fellow in a ruff with a quill pen, furiously scratching out "...which is a great abuse". "Mark my words! No good can come of this new-fangled business, bypassing the tallies! Corruption! Treason! Innovation!" Although maybe he would have changed his mind had he realized it would lead to the House of Commons catching fire. (Queen Elizabeth I: "Now, Mr. Speaker, what hath passed in the Lower House?" Mr. Speaker Popham: "An't please your majesty, seven weeks.")
As far as Cilician Armenia goes, I tend to think of it as the booby prize of medieval kingship. Just look at Guy de Lusignan, later Constantine II. His mother and his brothers Hugh and Henry were murdered by the regent Oshin in the 1320s. Oshin had engineered the marriage of his daughter to King Leo IV, a minor, who had them both executed when he came of age. (Remniscent of Richard II's struggle with his uncles.) The barons murdered Leo IV in 1341, and Guy foolishly accepted the throne. Things get a little confused here, but I think Guy's brother John was murdered in 1343, and Guy and his remaining brother, Bohemond, were killed the next year in a riot over their pro-Western policies. Usually you need an action movie to rack up that much carnage. Choess (talk) 02:53, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Four years and one thousand socks...

...and not a single stroke on a talk page to acknowledge his wanton destruction means that all bets are off AFAIC. Sorry to be so brutal, but I have been putting up with this idiot for four years as have others. Believe me, I have actually tried to reason with this guy to no avail. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:14, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you SO much. Really. There's an entire page at WP:LTA/MG. He creates an account and then uses that account to create as many socks as he can and then wreaks havoc on certain articles. He edits from a dynamic IP; there have been three CU's this month alone. Sorry to have gone off like that, but I am truly sick of this person. He has never so much as acknowledged a single concern leveled at him. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:19, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks again. Sure as shooting, you'll see five more socks which have been created by the main sock if you hit the log key. Sometimes he'll abandon his accounts if he thinks he's been caught and it looks as if he's gone away, but I'll monitor the activity. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:26, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Bless you and please forgive me for losing my temper on the talk page. It's just that I have cleaned up after him more times than I care to count. Heck, I'm even updating his LTA page more than just about any other page here lately and I really don't want to do so anymore. He is just...bizarre. No other way to put it. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:31, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Good idea. I'll see what I can do in that regard. He's persistent, but he'll likely slink out of sight for the next couple of days or so before he pops back up. I'll roll back my comments in the meantime. He'll never respond anyway. Thanks again. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:32, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely. I'm not even sure what to ask an outside checkuser in this case. Please keep me posted on this; I'm very curious to know what comes of it. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 03:33, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

A couple of more CP concerns pending

Hi. :) In the interest of "diving right in with delicate subject matter," I see that there a couple of more articles up at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2008 November 19 that need evaluation for degree of separation from source. This is kind of a problem, since I seem to be doing most of the work there, and unless I get access to the ODNB articles involved, I'm not going to be able to assess where they may follow too closely on the source. :/ I'm not a subscriber and no longer have ready access to a university library. With the last couple, another user temporarily provided access to the articles to me. Would you like to take a go at revising yourself in a sandbox or in the provided temporary pages? I'd be happy to help you figure out how to restructure in sections that you find difficult if you can tell what the original passages say. (As I've said before, I know what a pain in the neck it is. Believe me. :) I have stared at many a blank page asking myself, "Let's see. How else can I say, "He died at Mercy Hospital in 1953"?) Otherwise, I'll either have to see if I can access the source material somehow, find somebody who already has access to it to take a look, or (at least with Charles Ansell) start over. I welcome your thoughts in the best way to proceed. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:42, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Oh, P.S. I am now watching you here. :) I'll see any reply. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:43, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
Very well :). As it has no value to me per se and doesn't let anyone access anything important, I can always email you my auth code for the ODNB. I tried to rewrite the Robert of Thornham at the temp subpage, but Testing Times doesn't seem to have been around for a few days so I have no way of checking it with him :S. Ironholds (talk) 16:45, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I didn't look at the temp space so didn't notice that you were already revising. These don't come "ripe" for a few more days. I'm only looking ahead to address DumbBot's listings and noticed these. :) I'm inclined to think that ODNB would frown on our sharing that code, though I don't know their policies. :) Maybe I can work with Testing Times to help out with resolving this, though, since I obviously have no idea how similar the material may be unless I look over the source. If you want to discuss specific passages of concern, feel free to e-mail me, though. Sometimes when I'm trying to explain copyright problems, I run into the issue of not wanting to duplicate the text on wikipedia even illustratively, though I have no other way to explain the issue. Kind of a Catch-22 there. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:50, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
I'll email the passages, then. I can't seem to find an email link for you? Ironholds (talk) 16:55, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
It should be in my toolbox. It shows there for me, and I do occasionally get mail via it. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:57, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
Got the email page, but ATHENS is playing silly buggers authorising my access, so I'll try it later. Ironholds (talk) 17:10, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Patrick David Wall

I wasn't verifying it, I was merely taking back my previous statement. I tried to verify it just now and noticed a problem; I've left a message at T:TDYK. —Politizer talk/contribs 19:24, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

No problem; he probably was an undergrad, we just need a ref to make sure. —Politizer talk/contribs 19:34, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
If you add the quotation inside the appropriate ref, and make sure that ref is cited at the right spot in the article, that should be fine. —Politizer talk/contribs 19:36, 22 November 2008 (UTC)
Take a look at this revision and see if it's accurate. If you think this is ok, then you can suggest a new hook (probably using the thing about having published 3 papers before graduating). —Politizer talk/contribs 19:45, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

Stewards of Northstead

I've started work on prettying up some of the citations, in particular, converting the online ones from Google Books to "cite book," which are more metadata-rich. If you look at Sir James Lowther, 4th Baronet, you can see the style I've been using to reference the ODNB via "cite book," but you'll have to supply some of that info yourself, as I no longer have access.   Hello! Your submission of Jack Heslop-Harrison at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed. There still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! – How do you turn this on (talk) 23:58, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

barnstars

Well i disagree, you can be selective in giving a barnstar. Just as i would have with you, I was selective in appreciating you taking the time so i posted one for you. The page says anyone can give one if they want to. You make a valid point about it can scare a new comer, i did not think about that and im thankful for you pointing it out. However, it will not be diminshed if someone recives one out of kindness, but by being a tad selective, It can encourage some users to either contribute more civally or promote good faith between editors. I will continue to award them :) and advice is always welcome Ottawa4ever (talk) 01:38, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

In many ways I agree with you, but ive seen with pages like skittles a little encouragement helps editors keep an eye on a page which is frequently recieving vandalization. Yes alot of those reverts are from twinkle or huggle but there are people who come on there to clean up. If the want reconginition for doing so on that page, they might not get it. But the possibility of being rewarded encourages them maybe to seek that interest in vandalilsim behaviours. Its obvious we value these awards differently in some manners, but i dont give out awards often. I do believe people should have a little tenderness and happiness on their talk pages from time to time. Anyway no beef here I just think we have a different view on the award.Ottawa4ever (talk) 01:47, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Ya I see that with taht revenge fellow guy, which i agree with you, handing them out as a welcome may have its draw backs, which is why getting feedback from time to time is great. But being a former vandal myself and knowing a bunch others my advice to you is ignore and give the standard warnings (to reporting eventually if need be). With huggle or twinkle the amount of time to catch his edits is nothing compared to the time it takes him to do the vandal in the first place. but lets say he wants to turn over a new leaf one day, becuase we do. If he had a reason maybe to contrubte and build a profile up around himself, just a thought but who really knows why they do it in the first place. Enough rambling on that, I think I see many of your points here, And i will defineatly put more thought into this the next time i go onto a 'barnstar' spree. thanks for your feedback Ottawa4ever (talk) 01:56, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

oh dont take me so technical the mere fact i said 'barnstar' spree indicates Im trying to say its a bad idea lol (though it may be hard to give it up its just such a nice thing to do.....). If you think we still disagree, thats cool its only over barnstars, but man I genuinely mean it when i awarded one to you earlier. If your going to do feedback and contribute to being a better editor i think thats great, and i felt there why not give you one, if you dont think your feedback is of that lvel (which i believe it is) its your call. Anyway better we argue over a branstar than some other thingsOttawa4ever (talk) 02:06, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
And that is indeed fair to decide wether you want it or not. I fully support what your feedback is about it and giving them to new comers which can cause problems. But I think your missing the spirit of performing kind contributions to new users, and in fact users that are around. It still is a choice i make whether to give someone a barnstar and i stand by the philosophy I have. If you think they are worthless to you, thats fine, but others I dont believe think that, and possibly it may have a different effect than you predict. But who knows really. Anyway choice is yours.
On an unrelated topic let me give you advice on dealing with some vandals. I know you probably are very aware, but take from me ignoring them does the best, it takes the feul off the fire so to speak, the guy clearly wants attention, just get his account blocked, by reporting him. And like i told you before the time it takes you to undo what he or she for that matter can do, with huggle. eventually he will get bored. They thrive on attention, especially the ones that use sock puppets.Ottawa4ever (talk) 02:20, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Donno would you suggest i remove it?Ottawa4ever (talk) 02:24, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
alrighties then, anyway good luck with your editing, Ill definately stop with the awards to new comers without gauging them a bit first on their edit habits. But as far as others, If i feel they deserve one, Im not holding back :) Ottawa4ever (talk) 02:30, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Bush's record of service in the Air National Guard

While I do not refute that there is a contravorsy of his service in the Texas Air National Guard, such a statement does not belong in the National Guard of the United States article. While Bush's service record is dubious, he is still listed as serving in the Air National Guard regardless of him fulfilling his obligation. Such a statement does not directly pertain to the National Guard of the United States. Please place such a statement in the George W. Bush article. Neovu79 (talk) 01:46, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Thak you for the suggestion. I will edit it similarly, with neutrality. Elderberrywine (talk) 10:11, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

User names

I don't know why that UAA notification would not work. I suppose you recognise the extreme likelihood of all of those usernames you have posted being from the same person, having a trolling spasm? That is not to say that you are wrong, but be aware.--Anthony.bradbury"talk" 09:24, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes, but it brings the multiple issues that actually exist up

Tell me the following isn't a advert: "While the bands metal and HC following has been mainly word of mouth, in the northeast the buzz has increased nationwide over the airwaves with radio play on Orlando’s The Dungeon, 105.1 The Backyard, and on the largest all metal radio show in Arizona. See WOA on their upcoming coast to coast US tour.

Krom Records can be reached at P.O. Box 10076 Carousel Center Drive Syracuse, NY 13290 USA 315-256-2547 and kromrecords@hotmail.com"

If it is policy though not to add multiple, then thanks for telling me. ηoian ‡orever ηew ‡rontiers 04:41, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Book of Dignities

Are you referring to Haydn's "Book of Dignities", aka Beatson's political index modernized? It's pretty handy, especially for things like the revenue department, but sometimes not entirely accurate. (I'm still struggling with the identity of "W.H. Guarden", sometime a commissioner of the Irish treasury, for instance.) Choess (talk) 15:31, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Nimbley6 socks

Hi - thanks for the heads-up. Certainly looks like Nimbley to me. There are probably enough registered Nimbley6 socks active right now to justify a new SSP report; if I get time later today I'll create a fresh report and possibly a RfCU.

Oops, forgot to add: I've not blocked any of these socks - I'm not an admin and can't block. I've just tagged them as suspected sock puppets.
Related, I've filed a RfCU at Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Nimbley6 - hopefully a positive result will enable an admin to block the socks.
Cheers, and thanks again, This flag once was redpropagandadeeds 21:11, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

DYK for Jack Heslop-Harrison

On 29 November, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Jack Heslop-Harrison, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

PRR/Cargo

Yeah, just got your message, I was at the gig, thought it was amazing! And album/tour news is also great! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thedarkfourth (talkcontribs) 19:27, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

God, that sucks. Apparently there will be a dvd accompanying one of the editions of the new album with footage they shot at Cargo, so you might be able to see it at some point. I assure the new tracks were excellent, looks like the album is going to be really really cool.Thedarkfourth (talk) 19:31, 29 November 2008 (UTC)
Oooh, that would be cool! Yeah they played those songs (Gloaming was fantastic) plus another two new ones called Les Malheurs and Apogee of my Love.79.79.101.218 (talk) 19:32, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
Complex song titles are as much a part of PRR as indecipherable lyrics. Btw, check the new lyrics I found: http://prrambassadors.proboards41.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=talk&thread=187&page=1 79.79.101.218 (talk) 19:32, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
Yeah ignore that one...it was actually me being rather stupid.Thedarkfourth (talk) 19:52, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: welcome messaging

I never really took that into account. Thanks for the advice! --Dylan620 (Homeyadda yadda yaddaOoooohh!) 14:21, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi Ironholds. Are speedy templates for articles (CSD A) also for user pages (CSD U)? Just wondering. --Efe (talk) 09:38, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I recognized it as a blatant advertising. Thanks for the info. --Efe (talk) 09:42, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
