What exactly are you doing to the whiting articles? You seem to have added a needless page in the form of Whiting (fish) (disambiguation), when Whiting (fish) was perfectly fine. What are your reasons for this? Kare Kare 04:05, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
- No worries then, i can understand moving the page name to a (disambiguation) page name, but i think that Whiting (fish) should redirect to Whiting (fish) (disambiguation), instead of just one species called 'whiting'. Kare Kare 05:13, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
- My main concern was that people in North America and the Indo-Pacific would search for 'their' whiting, and hit the whiting disambiguation page and see "Whiting is a name given to the fish Merlangius merlangus, and not knowing much about taxonomy etc would look at the article, and because the fish looks similar to other species called 'whiting', think they had what they were looking for. But your suggestion of having a 'whiting is also' on the Merlangius merlangus article is good, and i think we should run with that, and have whiting (fish) link to Merlangius merlangus. I think also on the whiting page, we should make it clear the distribution of Merlangius merlangus (eastern Atlantic - Europe), so it is obvious that it is not the N American or Indo-Pacific varieties, as well as clarifying the other types of whiting - I'll get on to that now. - The changes to Merlangius merlangus look fine to me, and only a bit of tweaking is needed on the both the whiting disambiguation pages now. I find this sort of problem has cropped up with other Australian fish species named after Northern Hemisphere fishes (Australasian snapper, Australian salmon etc), but are totally unrelated to them. In the end i guess its up to the person who needs the information to find the scientific name and go from there. Cheers Kare Kare 06:36, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
- By the way, if you have an interest in fishes, i suggest joining Wikiproject Fishes, as fish articles are poorly developed on wikipedia at the moment. I'm guessing your not new to wikipedia or wikis in general due to your editing skills, so i won't bother with the mandatory welcome message containing links to 'how to edit' pages.
