Dear Zoo,
I hope you and your family are well.
Climbed up Mount Imlay last week. (It's crazy enough to be outdoors in Australia in this time of year). Here at home in Sydney now, it's 40 degrees C.
After a short while I found the critically endangered Mount Imlay Mallee. The location was from clues on the internet and in books. Scientists are pretty accurate in their description. It's not hard to put two and two together, and get a reasonable answer.
I started out 90 metres from the goal, and figured out the best way was to head north. (After sliding down from the mountain and sticking to a certain altitude as advised by the portable altimeter). All was perfectly fine, standard and as expected. However, I found the most diabolical enemy the in wilderness, the Eastern Brown Snake, but it slithered away in a moderate tempo.
Travel was extremely slow, as one had to push hundreds of bushes out of the way. But that's OK too. A hot day, and it's best to go slow.
The goal was to photograph the near extinct eucalyptus. The first two I found were dead. And many have apparently died recently. No-one is sure why they are dying off like this. Maybe it is fungus, drought or insects. Before entering the National Park, I disinfected my walking boots.
Seven and a half hours on the mountain, in the hottest part of the year. Great to see other delightful plants and sights as well. Such as a small black worm, which may be a Planarian. And to see the spectacular cool temperate rainforest in the southern gully again was too good to be true. Thanks to my portable Global Positioning System, the writings of A.G.Floyd and Google Earth!
