editWelcome to editing Wikipedia. I hope you have a successful time here, but unfortunately there have been problems with your first contribution, Draft:Niklaas Koen, which have led to its being deleted.
The biggest problem, and the one which was the direct cause of deletion, was the fact that large parts of the draft were copied from "Niklaas Koen: in the Fangs of Fate", by Ilse Olive, in violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy. Judging from your user name, you may be the copyright owner, and think that you therefore have the right to publish the content here. However, we cannot accept content on the basis that someone chooses to create a Wikipedia account and post it here, without proof that the copyright owner has licensed that content for free reuse under a license compatible with Wikipedia's reuse terms. Also, by posting content here you declare that you give permission for anyone in the world to reuse it, either unchanged or modified in any way whatever, for any purpose, subject to attribution to Wikipedia. That is clearly in conflict with the copyright notice in the book, which states that no part of the book may be reproduced without written permission from the copyright holder and the publisher.
Another problem is that the draft was highly promotional in character, much of it being written in unambiguously laudatory terms. A Wikipedia article must be written from a neutral point of view, and must not give readers the impression that the author holds a particular view of the subject of the article, such that the subject is noble or ignoble.
My advice to new editors is that it is best to start by making small improvements to existing articles, rather than creating new articles. That way any mistakes you make will be small ones, and you won't have the discouraging experience of repeatedly seeing hours of work deleted. Gradually, you will get to learn how Wikipedia works, and after a while you will know enough about what is acceptable to be able to write whole new articles without fear that they will be deleted. Over the years I have found that editors who start by making small changes to existing articles and work up from there have a far better chance of having a successful time here than those who jump right into creating new articles from the start. - @JamesBWatson: I'm not an admin so I can't see the deleted page, but I assume Draft:Klaas Koen is the same? I'm not certain as the bulk of the content was actually added by another editor there. jcc (tea and biscuits) 10:46, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Jcc: Yes, the new draft is identical to the deleted one, apart from addition of references and a few really trivial changes. However, I am now able to identify only a small part of the text that is copied from the book. I can't say whether that means that I made a mistake before, or whether the substantial copying is there, but I don't happen to have made the right searches to find it this time. Hi, I apologise for all the confusion. This is what happened: 1. I started working on a page called Klaas Koen, an ancestor of mine. I wanted to stop working and continue the next day. As any person working on a document would do on a computer, I clicked on SAVE, not realising that on Wikipedia this means that the article is then immediately published. (Very confusing!) 2. I then had a somewhat nasty note to myself from someone in admin, stating that the text seems to have been taken from a book called In the Fangs of Fate, author Ilse Olive. This is partly true, as I am Ilse Olive, and wrote the above mentioned book. However, I did not use the text from the book, but was writing an entirely new text, as I had gained lots of information through subsequent research. 3. The page I had written, had been deleted so I asked my sister. Karin Spence, username Nunukis, to help me get a new page started. As the original page ‘Klaas Koen’ had been deleted, she used a new heading: Klaas Koen and entered the relevant text (which I wrote) as a draft. She gave me her login details so I could finish the rest of the entry myself. 4. I subsequently submitted the text for review, as I wanted to be absolutely certain that I was doing everything correctly. 5. As to copyright, I have not “copied” any extracts from my own book, this text is newly written. I also would like to make a statement that this text will be in the public domain. 6. As to possibly making changes to an existing article, there is no article about this person at the moment, although he has been much researched and written about. 7. I also need help in placing a photograph of Niklaas Koen.
