Speedy deletion nomination of User:Ifecenticpolity/sandbox edit

A tag has been placed on your user page, User:Ifecenticpolity/sandbox, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be advertising which only promotes or publicises someone or something. Promotional editing of any kind is not permitted, whether it be promotion of a person, company, product, group, service, belief, or anything else. This is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages — user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources or advertising space. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Vitaium (talk) 10:41, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Vitaium: As Liz has told you multiple times already on your talk page, please re-review the criteria for speedy deletion. The page you tagged does not count as unambiguous advertising or promotion — not even close. Chlod (say hi!) 23:28, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Comments on your sandbox edit

Hi, @Ifecenticpolity:! As you may already know, I'm your designated mentor on Wikipedia. I couldn't have the honor to first welcome you (as Sennecaster had beat me to it), but anyways: welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you find your experience here pleasurable, or at the very least, make you want to stay.

I've been looking at your sandbox recently, and I was surprised at how well-written it is. For most sandboxes of mentees I've seen, they're usually about some company that they want to promote. I've been reading your draft (and the capital of the Ife Empire, Ifẹ) and I've got a few comments for it that could help your draft get accepted when the time to publish it comes:

  • The map at the start shouldn't be a thumbnail, but rather just a filename. Consider replacing [[File:Ife Empire.jpg|thumb|]] with just File:Ife Empire.jpg.
  • When uncertain about details (like Islam being a religion of the Ife Empire, or segi beads being the main currency of the Ife Empire), it's best to either look for a source that supports it, or just remove it entirely for now. We don't usually add in details for which we don't know who or what said it. If you're very sure of that detail but just can't find a source for it right now, at the very least, replace the question mark with a {{citation needed}} tag.
  • I've noticed that some of your images come from the books The Yoruba : A New History and Art and Risk in Ancient Yoruba. As much as we'd love images on Wikipedia to help with the draft, we can't host images that are not freely-licensed. This means File:Ife Empire map.png, File:Ile Ife Glass Segi Bead.jpg, and File:East-west Trade route.png can't be hosted on Wikipedia. The aforementioned files will likely be deleted soon for failing to be free content. There's unfortunately not much we can do about it, except to look for images that are freely-licensed.
  • I have doubts on whether one of your images, File:Anceint Ife pavement.png is actually own work. In case it isn't, and comes from the either of the books aforementioned, then it'll have to be deleted as well. Please do tell us whether or not we have permission to use these images or not, so that we can delete those that don't.
  • Likewise with images, we also can't use text without permission. In case any of the text you've written on your sandbox is not originally written by you, please do tell us as well since we're required to remove it.

I hope these can help make your Wikipedia experience much better. If you have any more questions or comments, please feel free to reply. Lastly: when replying, don't forget to add four tildes (~~~~) to the end of your message. Thank you, and happy editing! Hope to see you around!   Chlod (say hi!) 00:27, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Addendum on the images: there is a way to host copyrighted images, and that's through fair use. For more help, feel free to ask. Chlod (say hi!) 00:39, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, @Chlod: i was having troube finding out how to respond, thanks for thr help for the page. yes you are correct File:Anceint Ife pavement.png isnt mine, i was rushing a bit. The rest of the images i think i am free to use. also the text is all my writing.

Wikipedia and copyright edit

Hello Ifecenticpolity! Your additions to Nok culture have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 17:19, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
