Danke schön, aber meinen Deutsch ist nicht so gut. Same goes for my Grammar. I will however, be taking a trip to Germany the summer of 2007, after completing my 3rd year of German class. ---Idiot with a gun 03:23, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bitte schön. Yes, I can share some ideas with you that work for me:

1. I only use dictionaries from Langenscheidt. For learning German, these two are essential: Langenscheidt New College Dictionary German and Langenscheidt Großwörterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache. These two reference books are worth every penny.

2. Let's Go line of travel guides are completely written by Harvard students, and list all the budget accomodations in Germany as well as the sites and comprehensive history. When I go to Europe, I go in the winter. I book my flight on travelocity and usually go in the winter when the fares are much less.

3. Since high school, I've had a penpal in Germany (10 years now). If you like writing letters, try applying to World Penpals or another agency. My penpal Denise visited me once in Ohio, and I call her whenever I'm in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

4. If you can afford it, try subscribing to a German magazine. I get Das Neue Blatt every week in the mail. I'm not sure if your language skills are at the level where you would enjoy reading a German magazine, but you can check out the list of available titles at the GLP website. I studied in Germany 2 years, and I look forward to my magazine as a way to keep brushed up, as I don't have any friends here at the moment who speak German. Reading these articles out loud is great practice to improve my accent.

5. I am a user of German Wikipedia and add interwiki links. German Wikipedia is number 2; take advantage of it.

6. There's a lot of European users at meetme.hotornot.com and you can browse people by country, age, sex, etc. You can type in keywords like German to meet people to chat with in German.
