July 2010

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Saka no Ue no Kumo a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Hi, thanks for the advice, I can see the point about the history and will try harder to follow the procedure in the future. Actually, I did have a look at WP:MOVE but to be honest, the procedure appeared so complex and time consuming that I really couldn't make head or tail of it, and simply wouldn't have bothered. Looking at it again, now, I can see that was mainly because of all the well-meant warnings to prevent people from too much unnecessary page moving, but are there really so many people who want to do this for fun? I think even vandals must have more interesting things to do. For someone like myself, who sees a problem with a group of pages and how it can be fixed, it would be nice if the instructions would cut to the chase and explain quickly how to get the job done, perhaps after a very brief suggestion to consider alternatives. I was in a bit of a rush, but I really got the impression I was supposed to put in a nicely worded request for a move and check back in about six months. If this could be explained without recourse to vector skins and twinkle gadgets, that would be all the better. Your explanation is very clear: you might be just the person to rewrite the "How to move a page" section so an ordinary PhD like myself with only a decade or so of computer science training can follow it. Oh, I can see the little "move" tab now...cute, though a little hard to find. Well, next time. Thanks again for the explanation and sorry for any trouble... feel free to ignore my rambling comments, but perhaps they might be useful. Ambrose Bierce?

Congratulations on the excellent page for Blanche Partington! I had seen her name mentioned, while researching Ambrose Bierce, but didn't know anything about her until I read your article. I've made a few minor edits to Bierce's page, but am still in the dark about the letters he wrote during his final days. Do you have access to the contents of his letters to Partington, or anybody else? If so, you may be able to help fill in some of the blanks. Survey: use of Chronicling America on Wikipedia

My name is Donald Taylor and I'm the Wikipedian-in-Residence with the University of Maryland Libraries, Historic Maryland Newspapers Project. The Historic Maryland Newspapers Project is a part of the National Digital Newspaper Program, a joint program of the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities. We are digitizing historic state newspapers for inclusion in the Library of Congress's Chronicling America online digital collection of America’s historical newspapers.

We are conducting a survey of Wikipedia contributors who have cited Chronicling America as a reference in their edits to Wikipedia. It is the objective of our study to identify ways that Chronicling America might be made a better resource for people editing Wikipedia. We recently used Linkypedia to identify contributors who have used Chronicling America. As an editor who has made use of Chronicling America, we hope that you will take our survey.

Kenji draft

Hey Icuc2, sorry to bother you with this again, but recent developments have made me worried that if I go to all the trouble of completely rewriting the article and radically increasing its coverage of the stuff you said I should, when I try to overlay the draft on the article I will immediately be reverted and forced to discuss each individual point for weeks on end as I have up to this point on the relatively tiny matter of whether "Kokuchukai" and "nationalism" should be mentioned in the lead.

Do you also think I should just give up and make "piecemeal" edits? I took your specifically requesting that the article be radically expanded to discuss literary influence, style, major works, etc. as a blessing on the project, especially in the light of your previous ANI posts, but was I wrong to read it this way? I have reverted my own removal of the Kokuchukai name-drop in the lead of my redraft in the hopes that there are no other problems. Pending discussion of course. Other users' comments were unclear, so there probably isn't a "consensus" on that issue one way or the other.
