WP:UBX edit

Oh,no problem. You've seen my user page right? That wikiproject fits me to a tee! I'll delete them a bit at a time, I already deleted one that had already been moved. If anyone in the group would like to become admins, just let me know and tell me why you'd be good and i'll nominate in a heartbeat. -- —Preceding unsigned comment added by Karmafist (talkcontribs)

Well, I'm sure that I would find it very useful, but I very much doubt I have enough experence. Ian13ID:540053 10:28, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Doubleplus Good edit

Ian13 has earned a Cernen's Plusbox for remembering that I have a sandbox and actually using it.
Ian13 has earned a Cernen's Plusbox for starting the Userbox WikiProject, which will hopefully quell the chaos that currently exists over thataway.

Congrats. Cernen 01:09, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi again edit

Ian, I've been working for a little while (4-5 hours?) on the userboxes. I have closed 3 of the templates. Oh, and I think u now need to start archving this page, you're already @ 34! --Grand Edgemaster Talk 02:23, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to move this to your main User:Ian13 page in some appropriate section, as I expect that getting this might remind other fans of your work that you have earned more. AlMac|(talk) 15:43, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Some observations about stuff I see on your main user page, that may be of interest to you.

  • When your awards are viewed thru my Microft IE browser, the latest award overprints with Cernan's Double Plus awards, Often printing out looks different than on screen viewing, but I got same effect. It could be that you are more caught up on replying to people than implementing stuff you intend to do. I can identify with that.
  • When I was in college half a century ago (truely ,,, I am now over age 60) there were a bunch of elective geography courses I wanted to take, but they were only allowed for people majoring or minoring in Geography, so I changed my minor so I could take them.
    • I changed my minor several times so I could get at such speciality courses.
  • I know something about Prisons in the USA. I have never been inside of any of them, but my employer farms out some work to be done by the Inmates.
  • While I am a computer programmer in the AS/400 world, there are many areas where I am a total novice, and still very much the WP newbie.
  • I only learned about userboxes a few days ago. When I first started putting them on my user page, they went on 3 abreast, with wrap around on my page beyond the width of my MS IE browser, until I found out about the Box top bottom coding to force all in one column. I see on your page and some other people that they are two wide, and I like that appearance but have not yet figured out how you accomplish that.
    • I imagine in good time there will be appropriate tutorials linked to relevant places

In abit of a hurry sorry, because I have so much to deal with, and the family are downstairs for christmas. Anyway, award formatting fixed (I tested with IE), and the babel for Template:Babel-2-10 is fixed, and I will fix ll other 2 coloum templates when I have a little more time if someone hasn't already done so. For reference, just change the top width to 500px. Gtg, thanks for the updates and will post a better reply (and have ully read what you said) in a day or two. Ian13ID:540053 09:40, 26 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Since I wrote the above, I have totally redone my user page & I think it looks dramatically better. Previously I had the choice of a huge clump of boxes that I thought looked ugly, or a humongous column, whose readers eyes might glaze over after only part way down. My fix is to have a few boxes, then some text that is in size more than that taken up by the boxes, with each section on a related sub-topic. Much more readable, easier on eyes, easier to navigate, cleaner, better than the earlier alternatives. Now if I could only do as good a job on regular WP articles. Thank you for amending the userbox to user on my user-page. Was wondering if a bot is possible instead of manual cleanup like this...

Userbox thanks edit

I thank you for changing the userboxes on my page, and for maintaining WikiProject:Userboxes. I also feel I should appologise for creating User Classificaition Templates as it seems to have caused a lot of mayhem. I wish you a prosperous New Year. --DTR 10:20, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Oh, don't worry, I'm sure it will sort itself out sometime, a few of my edits and moved don't seem to have been very good, but thanks for your efforts. And merry xmas to you to, have a good one! Ian13ID:540053 10:47, 24 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Uh, thanks. (short?). Well, being 15 and living nowhere near Birmingham, and it being a meeting of a world of utter strangers, I very much doubt I would be able to attend, sorry! Ian13ID:540053 15:40, 26 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Stuff edit

Changes have been happening with the complex userboxes over at {{User OS}} and {{User browser}}. AzaToth has moved the items to use a : separator, a little like a sub-namespace. Maybe that's how we could go with all ubxs? He caused a little trouble by accidently breaking the current OS boxes. I've placed in temporary redirects and have modified the project home tasks lists to ask people to get standardising again! Oh, and you may want to check the recent edit to your user page by Daykart. Also, Happy New Year if you didn't get my mail. --Grand Edgemaster Talk 02:18, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your offer. You work so far for the Wiki seems good and I will be happy to take you on board, probably after a week or two of you editing, just to see that you are used to the wiki and current userbox system. Ian13ID:540053 18:04, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Template:User PTSD edit

I created the userbox because I fought in Iraq and have PTSD on account of it. Do you feel that the Iraq part should not be there? Daykart 21:27, 27 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Well, the thing is, I know people with PTSD who haven't been anywhere near Iraq. The problem is, if it is included, it lowers the amount of people who can make use of it. You could make a User:PTSD-Iraq as well, as a sort of subtemplate? Hope that helps... Ian13ID:540053 09:29, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Maybe I will. Actually, I'm thinking of a whole series of Iraq-related templates. This user supports our heroic troops in Iraq, This user is a veteran of the current Iraq war, This user wants to bring the troops home from Iraq, etc. What do you think? Daykart 17:12, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Well, it sounds good. I personally would go for just war, but thats probably just personal preference. Ian13ID:540053 17:13, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

BIG PROBLEM edit

Have a look at the deletion proposal for {{User:Ashley Y/Userbox/No Santa}} at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Listings#December 28.

Adrian Buehlmann brought up the point that this is in violation of WP:AMT... which means that half the userboxes on WP:UBX are also in violation.

Furthermore, the outcome of this proposed deletion has repercussions for the entire WP:UB. If it is deleted then many of the arguments for deletion will be valid for countless userboxes... which once again illustrates the fundemental importance of this proposal.

SO - something needs to be done. And I have no idea what. File:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano (Talk) 18:54, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Eeek, thanks for letting me know. I have written a nice long reply to this one, voting keep ofcourse. The nominator seems to be making a point, what with the name Santa on Sleigh, and his use of {{user Santa}}. But Wikipedia has a point of not discounting bias nominations - and HE complains it's point of view. Apparently it is only a violation of WP:AMT should any userbox be used in a pre-templated babel box or have an un-subst'ed {{userbox}} adaption within it. I presume the only way to save it is to let as many userbox fanatics know. Ian13ID:540053 19:50, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Yeah the subst: issue has been covered quite nicely at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Userboxes. We're gonna have to adapt an awful lot of boxes though... File:Anglo-indian.jpg Deano (Talk) 19:53, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Commander Keane bot edit

My bot, Commander Keane bot, just uses the standard pywikipedia framework. You can easily run your own version (see the link to meta). I'm really a novice with it and as far as the Userbox project I can really only touch pages to clear out the "What links here" - which I'm happy to do anytime. About the renaming, put in a request at Wikipedia:Bot requests, plenty of able bot operators watch that page. Good luck.--Commander Keane 20:40, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the links. Ian13ID:540053 20:42, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I've just discovered the the pywikipedia bot can do some of the template name replacements. I have just finished the Template:User win => Template:User windows task. Unfortunately I can't do the other current task in the Notices section because it's not straighforward.--Commander Keane 22:02, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Oh, cool, thanks! Ian13ID:540053 22:04, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Since most of the name changing tasks can be done with the bot, is there a way to encourage users to place the job in the notices section rather than doing it (laboriously) themselves. Maybe reword the current tasks instructions. I wouldn't want editors wasting their time on simple tasks when they can be automated.--Commander Keane 22:45, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I will try to set something up. Is there any way we could achieve some form of webbased control for this bot, password protected of course, so that a few of us could rattle the bot tasks through. Ian13ID:540053 10:44, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Template substitution edit

Hi, just to let you know that the templates did need updating (they were not floating properly, and the font size was incorrect), so I restored my versions, adding a "subst:" to comply with WP:AUM. laug 23:13, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

firefox userbox image edit

Hi Ian. Nice replacement image you found there. How did you determine that the new image was licensed under Creative Commons? I couldn't tell from looking at the source website. 12:11, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

If you look in the bottom right, it has a small CC logo, click on it, and i shws the relevent licence. I found the picture itself though the cc hunter that flicker has. Ian13ID:540053 12:14, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Found it. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the 'cc hunter' and who or what is flicker? 12:19, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

I can't say I am overly sure - have you done Crtl+F5 to clear your browser cache? Do you use Firefox web browser? I have a feeling that most of the monobook.js mods need Firefox. Ian13ID:540053 09:57, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Userboxes and optional parameters edit

I haven't really brought this up at the Project, but I'm not getting much of a response there about other things so I'd thought I'd drop by the boss man (=you). You can replant my comments anywhere you like.

Optional paramenters edit

I want to know what's going to happen with optional parameters before I work on clearing out the [[1]] prefix. Some Userboxes (eg {{User religion}}, {{User programming}}), {{User pronoun}} use them.

Advantages
  • You don't need as many userboxes (they can all fit on one page)
Disadvantages
  • To have optional parameters they use the {{switch}} template, violating WP:AUM (maybe it's ok, since {{switch}} never changes, but I don't know
  • Harder for newbies to edit
  • One change to the template results in changes to all associated varieties, with probably sucks up exta server resources--Commander Keane 20:27, 30 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
I can't say I know of where that would go, but yes, you are right. Ian13ID:540053 15:37, 31 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ian! I saw your comment at Wikipedia:Templates_for_deletion#Template:User_NoSanta and thought you might be interested in this template {{user freedom}}.
