I am looking for someone in the Dallas area (Plano specifically) to guide me in making an entry. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HornToadXi (talkcontribs)

There's no special need in someone from Plano specifically to help you make an entry. Most of Wikipedia's editors, me included, can help you in that department. What contribution were you thinking of making. JaakobouChalk Talk 14:47, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would like to submit an entry about Judge John Charles Watrous, briefly attorney general for the Republic of Texas in President Lamar's cabinet and the 1st and only federal judge for the (now defunct) Federal District of Texas. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HornToadXi (talkcontribs)

Ok. Please post a few links to some of the sources that you plan on using as citations for the article and I will see if he is notable enough for an article according to wikipedia guidelines (see also WP:CITE, and Wikipedia:Notability).

My primary source of information is: Hawkins, Wallace. THE CASE OF JOHN C. WATROUS, UNITED STATES JUDGE FOR TEXAS: A POLITICAL STORY OF HIGH CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS. Dallas, University Press in Dallas, 1950

This book is heavily referenced throughout. HornToadXi (talk) 23:04, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

References include the following:

Chapter 1 - 7. Act of December 18, 1812, in United States Statutes at Large, II, 788; United States Code Annotated, Title 28, secs. 134, 454.

Chapter 2 - 12. History of Alabama and Dictionary of Alabama Biography, IV; Ed Lyman, "Brief History of Montevallo" (Thesis, Alabama College, 1908);Writings of Sam Houston VII, 297-300;Reply of Judge John C. Watrous to the Speech of Senator Houston p. 9;Report 540 p. 335.

Chapter 3 - 23. Deed Records of Travis County, Texas, Book A, p. 371.

etc. HornToadXi (talk) 11:11, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well. On first look it seems like it's notable enough so I would suggest you start a WP:SANDBOX page titled User:HornToadXi/ArticleName and I'll review your work there and give you relevant tips (see also Wikipedia:Tutorial). Once the article reaches a basic level we can move it into the main-space.
Hope this helps you get started, let me know if there's any questions. JaakobouChalk Talk 21:12, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Will do. Thank you. HornToadXi (talk) 13:40, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

How do I start a page in the sandbox? When I used the link there is already something in there. HornToadXi (talk) 13:48, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

You probably clicked on the main sandbox link; Jaakobou was talking about a user subpage, which many users have. For example, you could do something like User:HornToadXi/John Watrous. Hope this helps. GlassCobra 15:04, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK, I've made a start. How do I put "/John Charles Watrous" into the heading. Also, my first reference is to the book by Walace, but the 2nd and 3rd are the references Walace uses in the same book. Is this correct or do I only reference the book itself? HornToadXi (talk) 15:58, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, you put stuff on your main user page. Click here: User:HornToadXi/John Watrous and start adding your material there. GlassCobra 16:02, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I'm confused. I guess I don't understand the use of various types of pages or what they are. I'll come back to all this after I clear my head. Thanks for your help. HornToadXi (talk) 18:46, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Comment: since you've started your article on your "userpage" rather than on a user-space sandbox page. I took the liberty to move your work to User:HornToadXi/John Charles Watrous where you can continue working on it. As for the references issue, you should cite the book itself unless you are going to personally verify his citations. JaakobouChalk Talk 19:45, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
