iihf european championship medal table

was this table from a source, or compiled from the list on the page. Wondering because there were three years missing. Also curious if you know the format for the european ranking from 1977 until 1981, I have a listed ranking from a source that does not provide an explanation, does not affect the medalists, but does affect the ranking of 1978 for sure. I know that from 1971 until 1976 only games between european countries counted, and I know that from 1982 until 1991 only the first round games counted, but in between are four tournaments that had two rounds that I do not know specifically how it was done. In 1978, if only games from euro countries counted Finland should be 6th, but my encyclopedia (not IIHF) lists them as 5th.18abruce (talk) 15:05, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

I got the results from Stephan Müller's International Ice Hockey Encyclopaedia 1904-2005 book. In 77 and 78, all eight WC games counted towards the EC. In 1979 and 1981, only results from the championship and relegation rounds with European teams counted towards the EC final ranking. I need to get a copy of that book, thanks for helping out. In 77 and 78 each nation played ten games, each european nation played another european nation seven times, I don't follow what "all eight WC games counted towards the EC" means.18abruce (talk) 01:20, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

You can find some of it online on Google Books. In 1977 and 1978 a total of seven games (not eight, my mistake) counted towards the final ranking of the EC. iihf european combined championships

I think adding to the World pages is the right idea. I am curious about the 1931 standings, does Mueller indicate that the consolation round had no impact on the standings?18abruce (talk) 19:53, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

I finished adding the missing EC info to the World pages earlier today. Regarding 1931, the only information in Müller's book was the final EC ranking. The book didn't mention anything about the consolation round. --Hockeyben ^{(talk - contribs)} 19:57, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Bit of a problem then (1931 standings), he could be right, but there should be an explanation as to why the World standings disagree with the Euro standings. Muller's standings only work if the consolation round does not count.18abruce (talk) 22:33, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Hey no worries, the alternate source I have on the euro championship standings (Total Hockey) messes them up on several of the 70's tournament, so I am not sure it offers a reliable answer either. 2011 IIHF 12 Nations Tournament page

Hi HockeyBen. I had completely forgotten about the 2011 IIHF 12 Nations Tournament page. Thank you for the reminder. I was never able to find info on how the tourney ended. You are right about the third tournament played in Füssen, Germany. That included some less competitive countries so that they could gain international experience. WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Andrzej Chowaniec. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. This can help you too, as the WikiProject members will often defend your work from deletion and try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information. iihf european championships

noticed something odd that I was hoping you had an explanation for. in 1966 East Germany is credited as winning the european bronze, which requires the removal of games against Canada and the USA. However both Duplacey and passionhockey.com indicate that separate tables began being used in 1971. Additionally, Duplacey's encyclopedia disagrees with the 1966 european rankings, as does the medal table used as the primary source for the Ice Hockey European Championships. Do you know of an external source that confirms that East Germany won the bronze in 1966, I can't find one.18abruce (talk) 16:58, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Hi, sorry for replying so late. But to answer your question, Stephan Müller's International Ice Hockey Encyclopaedia 1904-2005 lists East Germany as finishing third and offers some explanation in this quote: "Ignoring existing rules, the organizing committee counted also results versus Non European teams in. That way, the bronze medals were given to SWE. As recently as 1999, IIHF corrected this mistake and awarded the bronze medals to the former players of the GDR as well."

Yes thank you very much. I have another question that maybe Muller's book can answer. I am very puzzled why Bulgaria was promoted to Pool B in 1970, when records seem to indicate it should have been someone else. I have one book that has only the 1969 Pool C standings, and they are very confusing. Two other sources have the same as what we present here: that it should have been Hungary not Bulgaria.18abruce (talk) 16:58, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

No problem. As for the confusion regarding Hungary and Bulgaria in the 1969 and 1970 tournaments... I can offer no definitive answer. Müller's book states that the top two teams from Pool C in 1969 - Japan and Switzerland - were promoted to Pool B for the following year. Bulgaria finished a distant fifth in Pool C that year, but they were strangely promoted to Pool B for 1970 over both Hungary and the Netherlands, which finished in third and fourth place respectively in Pool C. The book offers no explanation as to why Bulgaria was promoted, so it is a mystery to me too. --Hockeyben ^{(talk - contribs)} 02:29, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello Hockeyben! I highly appreciate the work you've put into filling Wikipedia with ice hockey articles. Do you think you have the time to create all "Kvalserien YYYY" (YYYY is the year) articles for Kvalserien, from 1975-2007? Do you also think you have time to create all "HockeyAllsvenskan Kvalserien YYYY" articles for Kvalserien (HockeyAllsvenskan), from 2001-2012? olympic qualifying hockey

if you don't mind wondering if Muller's book offers any insight into why Bulgaria and not Norway played in the 1976 winter Olympics. And also why Japan played in 1980, not Switzerland.18abruce (talk) 18:34, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

For 1976, the book states that Sweden and East Germany withdrew from the tournament and were replaced by Japan and Bulgaria. It does not however offer any explanation as to why Bulgaria was nominated in place of Norway.

It's pretty much the same story for 1980. The book states that East Germany again withdrew and Japan was nominated to replace them. No mention of why they were nominated over Switzerland. --Hockeyben ^{(talk - contribs)} 01:22, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
