Galeed Chapel in Brighton

Hi – thanks for your note on my talk page. I have had a look in some of my books, and The Strict Baptist Chapels of England: Sussex has some information. It appears that Galeed's history is tied up with the history of the former Tabernacle Baptist Chapel on West Street in Brighton, demolished in 1965 (see List of demolished places of worship in Brighton and Hove for some more info about it). This was built in 1834 for a minister who had to stand in and preach some services at Salem Chapel in Bond Street (also now demolished) when the regular minister was taken ill, and whose preaching was well received. So the Tabernacle was built for him as an Independent chapel. Later, worshippers from yet another Brighton chapel, "Providence" on Church Street (also now demolished), joined the congregation of the Tabernacle; and eventually the mixed congregation of Strict Baptists and Independents decided to separate. The Strict Baptists seceded in 1867 and set up a church in a room in Windsor Street (more or less opposite where Galeed now stands), then built the Galeed Chapel the following year and moved in there. I will now quote verbatim from the book, in relation to the founders:

"By the end of 1868 the chapel in Gloucester Road had been erected and occupied. [...] A period under a varied ministry led to the time when Mr J.K. Popham of Liverpool was called to the pastorate in 1882. Under his ministry the church became settled and established, and the faith and persistence of the founders were rewarded. These consisted, in particular, of seven men whom Mr Popham, in his brochure entitled A Humble Memorial to the Lord, calls 'Number Seven'. They were John Marshall (who built the chapel at cost price), B. Hunt, T. Lewis, A.S. Palmer, J. Banfield, Mr Combridge and Mr Bentall." (pp33–34)

So it looks like your relative was indeed one of the founders back in 1868, possibly having previously worshipped at the Tabernacle. The Gospel Standard Baptist Library in Hove, from where I borrowed this book, might have some more material on the chapel – possibly even a copy of the brochure referred to above. I've got a PDF copy of the library catalogue somewhere; I'll have a look. (Incidentally I know The Quadrant and the Burgess Hill station newsagent well; the newsagent is still there doing a good trade today!) Please see my comment on the talk page of Operation Provident - I removed the prisoner numbers not because I doubt that it is true, but we need to have a citation there before we can include it. Please feel free to put it in again when we have a good citation. And well done on the article. Don't forget to add an infobox! WP:MILHIST will have one for you. OK thanks for that. Detailed figures are given and referenced in the article on the ship MS Rigel but I have summarised them with a reference in this article now.
