Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, but all Wikipedia articles must meet our criteria for inclusion (see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Since it does not seem that York Hiking Club meets these criteria, an editor has started a discussion about whether this article should be kept or deleted.

Your opinion on whether this article meets the inclusion criteria is welcome. Please contribute to the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/York Hiking Club. Don't forget to add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of each of your comments to sign them.

Discussions such as these usually last five days. In the meantime, you are free to edit the content of the article. Please do not remove the "articles for deletion" template (the box at the top). When the discussion has concluded, a neutral third party will consider all comments and decide whether or not to delete the article. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice?

Deletion Discussion

edit

Hi there, I thought I'd answer a few of the questions you raised. Only administrators can perform deletions, so you can't really delete the page while it's under a deletion discussion. As far as importance, at present, it appears the organization doens't meet the guidelines for notability for an organization. I know that many other articles also probably fail to meet the same standards, but basically we generally don't think the "Other stuff exists" argument is very convincing. (Kind of like speeding, in that way). However, if there has been an article or two that discusses the club in a significant way (ie, it'd be considered a reliable source), I'd be happy to help you add it. (Or if you find such material later on, I'd be willing to help you work on recreating the article). (Things like having the first ridge runner, largest meeting, etc. would probably be notable facts if they can be verified).

I know we've got a lot of policies, but we don't expect everyone to pick them up instantly. Hopefully this hasn't put you off wikipedia too much. If you've got any questions, feel free to drop a line on my talk page, or, just type {{helpme}} somewhere on your talk page, and someone will come along to help. Will not squeel on the others as they need to be on the web like many. Just hope you may even for a second belive that I am not the evil one you all think I am. At this point I have learnd that I a webmaster and web user of 12 years have no clue as to what Wikipeadia is. Guess it is like the old Referance vol. 1-13 books of the 1970s. I made the muistake of thinking it was an all knowing about all things. Guess some day I will figure you guys out. Do you have somthing that does not look like a 50 page leagal doc that I could read to gain a clue. All I have been linked to so far read so lawer like are hard to get a feel for what Wiki really is. Any info pages that are people friendly and not leagle stuff — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hikingb5 (talkcontribs)

Fair point: Wikipedia does have a bit of an issue with instruction creep. I think that basically all of our rules are summarized in the 5 Principles. (And it looks like everything you've done so far has been more or less in line with them). There's a little more detailed at the simplified rule list, but to my eyes, the main thing that's been an issue here is notability. My best summary here would be: if you can find a few news articles (preferably in local/major papers or books, not blogs) about the group (as opposed to a quick mention of it, or containing only a few quotes from members), that should be enough.
Oh, and I wasn't asking you to list the other sites, and I certainly don't think you're being evil. (And I hope no one here has implied that you are, it'd be pretty bad manners on their part). Anyway, I hope this helps. Cheers, --Bfigura (talk) 13:37, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
O, and PS: you can sign messages (on talk pages and discussions, ideally not in articles) by typing four tildes ('~~~~'). It'll help people figure out who's saying what, and when. Cheers, --Bfigura (talk) 13:38, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • I though you had to sign it all and had not done so out of first not remembering the password then just forgetting at times. As to news articals I was told by the delete guy that they do not count and he will be deleting a dozen more pages like mine that deal with hking clubs and trail clubs that build and suport hiking and trails and also Canoe water way trail clubs. So I guess lots of people will not know were to enjoy the outdoors guess they better buy a Wii and do it as a game. WILL look for any saved newspaper stuff I have on my F drive. And post it here for your ideias. And with todays web who gets documented in books and all. You get documented in email newsletters, podcasts and online news. Maybe I will learn some day how to use Wikipedia. Not being smart but Tubo tax in Feb. doing my federal and state taxes was easier and less confusing :~) Maybe Wikipedia can make up a turboTax like How To modul were we can first learn Chaper one are you Wikiedia stuff, Chapter two this is what you need to acumulate before even starting, Chapter three this is how you do the page building and these are template pages you can use and just fill in the text and upload the photos??? • PS Thanks. Hikingb5 (talk) 01:45, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome. We do have Your first article, which kind of outlines how to start writing one. There's a host of other pages too, in fact, enough to be confusing. Probably the best way to find something out about wikipedia is the Editor's Index, which is exactly what it sounds like. And as far as the news articles, I haven't read through them. I'll take a look at the ones you mentioned in the AfD, and see if I think. Best, --Bfigura (talk) 03:25, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

    • This is the oldest York Dispatch / ydr.com newspapers stories on us.

[1] [2] This two photos show the one story I am the one swinging the AdsAx Hikingb5 (talk) 23:03, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

    • If you view them both at full size reading is easy also I like a few others have our 1,000 hour patches etc for 1,000 hours of trail building and work on the A.T. The nice thing about this story is they point out how our members had a part in building the very first Building A.T. before WWII. It did not become formal till the 50's. We also built the Mason Dixion Trail.

The Mason Dixon Trail connects the Appalachian Trail with the Brandywine Trail. This 193 mile long trail starts at Whiskey Springs, on the Appalachian Trail, in Cumberland County, PA and heads east towards the Susquehanna River Hikingb5 (talk) 01:13, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

    • YDR artical 2 about YHC and the MDTLeading the trail This has been edited to make people copyrite ok if needed I may have the full version the ydr.com archives may have this stuff but I do not wish to pay $. Hikingb5 (talk) 01:23, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • Do not know what one works best as just slapping this up fast try both these links of saved ydr news. The first one may show a flash warning as this page no longer is on the normal YDR site[3] , [4] The clubs Rocks park photo was published in the Smithsonian summer Sci reader pub 2006. • This is the Smithsonian heading off the power point page they proofed me in 2006 of our York Hiking Clubs main page logo photo and info on it!

    • This is info on the MDT we built half of and on that half they now hold this: Longest Day 100K Challenge: June 21, 2008 - 100 kilometers in 15 hours of sunlight on the longest day of the year. Sunrise 5:37, Sunset 8:35 (total time 14:58). Susquehanna Park, Maryland to Long Level, near Wrightsville, Pa Start at sunrise (05:37) finish by sunset (20:35), total time: 14:58.

This MDTS 100K trail run has been run for at least three years making the MDTS part of "Trail Running Clubs" scheduled events for the year. They write about how the York county part of the trail is: "The route is along the most beautiful part of the Susquehanna, and the wide variety of terrain and landscapes is unbelievable!"

This trail run is even posted as far as a Saudi Arabia trail running website. YHC is now working the trail for the run. Including new 10 miles new changed trail due to land owners. That is over 500 hours of work digging 5 feet into the side of the mountains and boulders fields.Hikingb5 (talk) 02:21, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

    • Photos of A.T. Trail building were we moved car size rocks by hand and placed over 50 300 pound step rocks in one place and cribbing in others and a mile of A.T. quality trail digging that means not 6' but 7' into the mountain side. A.T. Trail Building. 14 days of 7am to 6pm no pay Plus other hours to finish it Hikingb5 (talk)
    • I hope this lets you know why we are a "The Appalachian Trail Conservancy" Trail maintaining club and not just a bunch of people walking the farm roads. These trails would not be listed in Wikipedia without us people to build them and spend many hours keeping the grass, vines, poison Ivey, tree storm damage, trail security, solving murders......
