FYI

H5N1 is a subtype of the virus species Influenzavirus A that causes a disease discussed here: Transmission and infection of H5N1 and is currently infecting birds worldwide as discussed here: Global spread of H5N1 and is a current pandemic threat as discussed here: Influenza pandemic as is summarized in the H5N1 box on the H5N1 article pages. WAS 4.250

Of course, how could I not know that? It is, after all, completely and perfectly obvious.--HereToHelp 21:24, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
People come to these H5N1/avian flu/flu articles with all manner of misconceptions, and it has been hard to be clear, encyclopedia, and nonredundant in successfully communicating to the intended readers. For exapmle, just a bit ago, we had talk on our talk page that indicated people were misreading the whole global spread of H5N1 as a spread in humans. It is a spread in birds. WAS 4.250 21:42, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
That I know. Really.--HereToHelp 21:46, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
Or, at least let's hope it can only be spread by birds.--HereToHelp 21:46, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

User:RememberOctober29

I noticed that you just moved RememberOctober29 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) to the Wikipedia vandals category. That category is reserved for major vandals who have vandalised repetitavely under multiple usernames or IP addresses, not individual usernames. If you want to report this user for vandalism, what you should do instead is report him to either Wikipedia:Requests for investigation, or Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Thank you. - Conrad Devonshire 23:36, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia page redesign

Nice job stealing the Uncyclopedia format. You really deserve a reward for it. --70.161.205.157 23:38, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Well, first myself and a team of other Wikipedians designed the new page, but while tweaking the draft Uncyclopedia stole it, then it got uploaded as our Main Page, and then I redid my userpage.--HereToHelp 23:42, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Requests For Adminship Nomination

Hello. I came across your user page, and couldn't help but noticing that you have over 4000 edits, and yet you're not an administrator. I read some of your old talk messages, and notcied that you have been asked about becoming an admin before. Well, I was wondering if you were still interested in becoming one, and I am eager to give my first nomination. Although I do have a far less edit count than you, I have been here a while and the majority of my edits are in the namespace. I looked over your edits and how much you've helped people, and think that you would be perfect. One thing I'm skeptical about is that you have only a small amount of your overall edits in the namespace, but if you review the community standards for becoming an admin, I have a strong feeling that you could be accepted. Anyway, I figure it's at least worth a try (What's the worst that could happen?). Respond on my talk page (preferably) or you can leave it here. Thanks, Alex43223 03:00, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Rfa Nomination

Referring back our earlier conversation on the subject

Did you ever get my test email(s) that I sent a while back? If you are interested I still have some advice before you accept the RfA nom. Petros471 13:28, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

No, I must have missed them in deleting spam. I found my answer to the first question in your archives (listing the topics relly helped, thanks), but I don't think I have anything else. Do you mind repeating it?--HereToHelp 21:19, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Well as you've now accepted the above nom, and it's going fine, there isn't really so much need. I will still give you some of the suggestion, but haven't got much time right now and there is no rush. Petros471 21:06, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
True.--HereToHelp 21:37, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll tell him he better change username because of possible sockpuppetry and it's a username people won't be comfortable with anyway. If I was a sysop I'd block him on about his second vandalism. I'll try the diplomatic route, first.--HereToHelp 11:50, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Pic of the day

As of a week ago, I filled the pic of the day to a month in advance. This was to assist the person in charge of that department. Since then, the buffer has been rapidly slipping away. I thought you might like to know, as once I achieved my goal of establishing the buffer, I moved on to other projects. --Go for it! 23:27, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

I'm already busy but I'll help out. The last thing we want is to have a red link n the Main Page. Now, where do I get the list of images from? Wikipedia:Tommorow's featured picture?--HereToHelp 23:34, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
They are posted in the order they achieved featured picture status as displayed on Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs 05, reading from the bottom right corner to the left. The picture for April 18th is "Crepuscular ray sunset", the 19th's is "Remembrance poppy", the 20th's is "The Three Sisters", etc. (There was another schedule formula before the 18th, in which Thumbs 02 was used on M/W/F, which is what to fall back on if new featured pics run out, which will happen eventually if they don't keep up to promoting 7 pics to featured status each week). April 15th's picture is "Monarch butterflies. --Go for it! 00:27, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

The new formula is not to switch between the thumbs, but go with Thumbs 5 all the way. --Go for it! 00:57, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

The new formula is scheduled to start as of April 18th. Before that, it was Thumbs 05 on T/Th/Sat/Sun, Thumbs 02 on M/W/F. But starting as of April 18th, its Thumbs 05 every day of the week. --Go for it! 01:09, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

I jumped the gun a bit on the monarchs to get them in in order, but I think everyone will pardon me. I think I have it now; thanks. --HereToHelp 01:14, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
It's easiest to see from the archive page. I'm prepping the pages with the differentiated code to the end of the month. --Go for it! 01:54, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
"Differentiated code"? Huh? You mean how panoramas require different formatting to put them on top of the text or what?--HereToHelp 01:56, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
There are 4 versions of pic of the day. You can see their slots from the monthly archive pages. Each version has a different format. I generally prep all the slots except for the "column" version, since that has no additional code (you just take code out for that one). Particular pics can also have different formatting (horizonal pics get 600 width, while vertical ones get 450). Square pics is whatever width works best. Also, you generally edit the text down to equal or less than the height of the pic, going over that only when absolutely necessary to cover the topic. Hope that helps you help us.  :-) --Go for it! 02:13, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, coordinating from one source really helps. I'll try to do a few of these a day and we'll be fine. I still can't quite get the panorama of the LA air pollution to work...--HereToHelp 02:18, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Your RfA and one other

It looks like your RfA is a slam dunk. I wonder if you would consider supporting one that is razor thin? AzaToth's RfA looks like it's going to come down to a vote or two and then discretion from a bureaucrat. I've never campaigned for another RfA before, but I feel compelled to on this one because of the unique contribution he makes and his legitimate (in my opinion) need for admin tools. Because his focus has not been in the main article space (similar to you, although more so in his case) many people are opposing based almost entirely on that criteria. Please have a look and read the pro and con arguments, and then weigh in with your vote. Thanks, —Doug Bell talkcontrib 03:10, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks; I'll do that. If it's close, though, a bureaucrat may decide that there is no concensus and not sysop the person, even if they, say, technically have a majority. That 70% area is a slippery slope.--HereToHelp 03:13, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Where did you find that code?

I installed the code for "tomorrow's pic of the day" as per your suggestion. Good one. By the way, where did you find that, and is there any more? I tried +2, etc., and those don't work, but -1 works (though -2, -3, etc. don't work). Have you taken a look at the code? It's humongous!

Hey guys. I saw this discussion pop up on the 'what links here' for template:day+1. Sorry about the size of the code - it pretty much has to be 369 lines long as it'd be incomprehensible if all bunched together. Each line could be alot shorter if just doing 'current day +/- 1' (as it did originally), but I added in the extra info to allow it to cycle through any set of date ordered pages. As to 'day+2'... you could do {{day+1|{{day+1}}}}, but most of the time I think the 'cycling' effect I was talking about should be sufficient. See the 'tip of the day' pages for April 20, April 21, and April 22 for an example of this 'cycling' in action. Guess I ought to put up some documentation now that people are looking at it. --CBDunkerson 11:53, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
I found it being discussed during the aftermath of the Main Page redesign. And {{day-1}} comes out as May 10. +/- 2 does not work, though.--HereToHelp 12:26, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Do you think you can make a variant of this template, maybe {{day+1 underscore}}, that gives the date with an underscore to make it compatible with links? I try to have link to edit tommorow's POTD and I get this: 12,_2024&action=edit Edit because the template includes a space. If you get me started, I'll even put in the underscores where they are needed. Shouldn't you be able to copy and paste the data from the regular template and start from there? Please investigate this for me.--HereToHelp 13:07, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

I added an extra parameter '4' which allows a spacing character (such as '_') to be specified.
So, ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:POTD_row/{{day+1|4=_}},_{{CURRENTYEAR}}&action=edit Edit]'' now produces Edit.
I also added documentation to Template talk:Day+1. --CBDunkerson 13:40, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! If it was that easy, what about {{day-1}}?--HereToHelp 13:42, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Yup, was working on it. Updated now. --CBDunkerson 13:54, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. That's really useful.--HereToHelp 13:59, 26 March 2006 (UTC)== Features and admins ==

Picture of the Day

Hi HtH,

I reverted your edit to Wikipedia:Picture of the day because I don't think we want to preempt the next day's POTD there. However now POTD is on the Main Page, the idea of having convenient access to the MainPage version is a good one. The best idea might be to include previews of the MainPage formatted version on the monthly archive pages such as Wikipedia:Picture_of_the_day/March_2006. In practice the POTD archive pages are the main working pages for lining up POTD entries. The down side is that might make those pages somewhat cumbersome.

Other options might be to switch the previewed format on the POTD archive to just show the MainPage layout, or to set up a parallel archive at say Wikipedia:Picture_of_the_day/Main_Page/March_2006 for the MainPage layout. -- Solipsist 22:16, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Help menu should be centralized

I'm not sure why you moved the menu off its page of focus. Though it really should remain centralized. As a template, only more advanced users can be involved in its development and maintenance, and it is an element of Wikipedia which affects everyone. Also, it's much easier to keep track of and discuss from a centralized location. This issue is also tied-in with the icons, and Lethe seems to be fanatically opposed to them.

Your input is needed on Help talk:Contents. I can't keep up with their reversions. --Go for it! 18:37, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. 1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.

Just wanted to give you a heads up your Userpage isn't 800x600 friendly. By no means is this a requirement, but as admins it does help set an example. - RoyBoy 800 04:00, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Having the barnometer and userboxes side-by-side, in addition to the leftnav, exceeds 800px. If you move the barnometer elsewhere (e.g. below the featured pict, or somewhere below the userboxes), that would help resolve this issue. Also, where you have "Main Page redesign · Tip of the day · ..." all on one line, it causes scrolling. If you remove the date or put it elsewhere, the scrolling would go away. Hope these suggestions are helpful. Your userpage is cool and these are just minor issues. --Aude (talk | contribs) 13:53, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

It is unnecessary to mention "pictured" for DYK or FA. For FA, it is fairly obvious. For DYK, it is always the first suggestion that is pictured. Unlike ITN which follows the recency of news and "on this day" which follows chronology, DYK doesn't have a set order and hence, we always put the DYK suggestion with the picture as the first entry. --Gurubrahma 05:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

I didn't know that; thanks.--HereToHelp 20:14, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

POTD text edit

Hi, just a small heads-up that I edited the text to go with Wikipedia:Picture of the day/April 28, 2006. The primary current in a transformer does not induce a current in the other winding(s); rather, it creates a magnetic flux in the core which is what induces a voltage in the windings. Regards, --BillC 20:06, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

When there's a problem like that you have o go to the two other versions with the text and update them. Also, you need to rectify the article from which the text came from. I copied your adjustment to the template that you edited to all of these sources for you.--HereToHelp 20:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Thank you. --BillC 00:29, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

RFC

Hi, I have started an RFC on User:Go for it! As someone with highly relevant experience and opinions on his habits, your input and additions would be appreciated. Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Go_for_it!. thanks. -Quiddity 05:00, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Community Portal Redesign

I noticed you updated the design of the Community Portal. After reading the discussion, it doesn't seem like any consensus was reached. I left a comment on Wikipedia talk:Community Portal#Community Portal RedesignJ3ff 16:31, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Goforit's RFC

Hi, regarding Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Go for it!, apparently there has been some editing of the initial statement since you signed it. Please read it again and/or consider changing your edits/your signature to avoid the impression of inadequate procedure. Thank you. Kosebamse 20:56, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

I looked it the page history and, having signed it just about ten minutes ago, there hasn't been any. Thanks, though.--HereToHelp 21:01, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Community Portal colors

    • I started copying over what you have to Wikipedia:Community_Portal/Redesign/Draft2a, and working on the columns. With where it is now, it is missing some things from yours, the boxes colors are somewhat mismatched, and don't line up at the bottom, and some things are shifted around (e.g. TOTD and policies). Will keep working on it, but feel free to help and make changes. --Aude (talk | contribs) 21:43, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Community Portal

Hi, Since you reverted to the last design version, we've lost a functional (non design) change that occured on the page during the dificulties. Can you restore the Wikipedia:Community Portal/gac-summary template to the page. --Barberio 19:32, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

You won't mind if I cross my fingers, you MAC-a-holic?

Intriguingly, I was just emailing Mgm about how I hated for people to create unnecessary new sections for casual posts, and here your houseRulz want them. Well, it takes all kinds, but that's probably strike three.

  1. You give me an answer I don't want to here.
  2. A MAC attacker
  3. Irreconcilable philosophical differences tantamount to a declaration of WikiWar! Ok-grab the nearest wet noodle and let's fence! en garde!
You didn't say anything about numbers :(
btw- just thanks for the grim word. Pessimist! Think posative forsooth!

Best regards, FrankB 15:36, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Touche, but Mac is good enough to let me edit this.--HereToHelp 15:43, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Does the MAC have multiple cut N paste buffers? My best man has been ragging me about old slow tech windows forever. And irony of ironies, he now works for Microsoft out at Redmond, OR! I would'a never guessed that would happen. He's militantly MAC! FrankB 00:03, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I have an entire subpage for that. Block them using {{attackuser}} and list them on that page if you find any more. I had to subst: the template for that specific user because of the apostrophe.--HereToHelp 11:14, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Announcements/New featured pages

I noticed you removed 2 FPs from Template:Announcements/New featured pages, the pictures you removed were just recently added. Were they added in the wrong spot? -Ravedave 14:24, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh, sorry. If they were newer than the ones at the top, yes they were in the wrong spot. But the list seemed long, so I was bold and shortened it. On the other hand, we're moving a lot of images up and it's remotely possible that they had so many above them even after being featured just days ago.

Suggest you revise and extend after seeing

Diff makes it clear you object to help change (I can guess) At least 'some'... see template talk:welcome (last sect), and This , if there is a 'problem'.

  • As you can see from my template talk post, I may be in better place to appreciate the real problem faced by the new newbie (I guess I'm a retread or somesuch) <G>
    • Dang - I lost my cut buffer! Arrrg- why doesn't windows have multiple buffers! or WikiP? Hate that!
  • Besides, the guidelines say to act 'boldly' — something probably copied off a cereal box from the 1960's when I was but a wee lad.
  • Thanks for your input on talk:Arsenal of Democracy -- TT was helping me build a track list, and I'm not sure I've got here yet for that! (I use a fair number of user subpages, but I thank you for the tip anyway on Sandbox2) <G> I'm not that danged new <G>! Naive, untalented, slow... those I can live with...

Best regards, FrankB 00:00, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

    • Oops- had you confused with user: HappyCamper, so you are cordiallly invited to pick on frank as well...
    • See Section before article which just 'happened' in what I term an 'Vomitous edit'... but that's covered too.

Best regards! FrankB 00:08, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm amazed the Help page change still stands! Since you noticed at least, I'll take that as a good sign.

  • Consider the difference in the format layout, one horizontal, one using a lot of verticle. I seem to recall seeing a technique (Template:MBTA seems to incorporate it), where you could build the table 'naturally' as if on paper left to right. (btw- fill in your tz!)

Any help on this conumdrum??? Or is it only avail using a template? Thanks either way. iirc, you want the thread here, so answer here, even if I'm wrong <G>! (sect edit's need a second monitor above the edit page, I fancy!) FrankB 00:24, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

No idea; I'm not a code person. If you would read the first sentance of the autobiography, I'm UTC (-5). And...it's probably best not to use abbreviations and slang around here (except for things like NPOV and RfA).--HereToHelp 00:53, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

CP talk

i think you made a mistake in your deeply indented comment midway down Wikipedia_talk:Community_Portal#Proposed_new_design. "Ah. Yeah, the CP will probably get a big overhaul by...". Did you mean CBB, instead of CP? --Quiddity 03:30, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh! Yes, I did (although we're finishing an overhaul now).--HereToHelp 11:09, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

MediaWiki Error

Hey. Hope you've been enjoying the adminship. Like I said, I would come to you if I needed something done that required a sysop. That said, I think I've come across a minor mistake in the MediaWiki software that needs correction. When I used Special:Export to export a page, I noticed in the text it said "You can export the text and editing history of a particular page or set of pages wrapped in some XML. In the future, this may then be imported into another wiki running MediaWiki software, although there is no support for this feature in the current version." The underlined text is incorrect, because admins can use Special:Import to import pages. You can notice in the history that that text was added in 2003, when Wikipedia used an older version of MediaWiki. I think that the text should be changed to something like "Administrators can then import pages on other wikis running the MediaWiki software." or something of that sort. Thanks, Alex43223 21:47, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I, actually, am not the right user to ask for this. I don't use that page, in fact, I don't know where to go to edit the top of it! Also,it would require the community to look over and approve. Sorry I can't help you.--HereToHelp 21:58, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

CBB

i updated the CP notice on the CBB, (you're welcome to rewrite). I thought you might want to add a sentence at the end pointing to your proposal(sandbox). --Quiddity 00:46, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

At this critical junction (we just finished one thing and should start on the next, we have a number of new possibilites open:
I could do any of them; I have no preference. HereToHelp 02:18, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
  • I'd be into re-evaluating the CBB. I was thinking about those [show/hide] tags, and tried to find one that defaults to show, but that remembers if you hide it. So that people could: eg. hide the CBB box and get the "To do lists" section at the top whenever they load the CP. Or hide the "Editorial departments" section to get a shorter page. I looked at {{hidden}} (and hiddenbegin/hiddenend), but couldnt find anything that mentioned a default option of Not-Hidden. Maybe you can find something, or know whom to ask?
  • I'm interested in that policy, and will look/contribute/feedback when i have time soon.
  • I'm not really into the Featured Contents redesign. I'm not very familiar with that project, so apart from wanting to compact&clarify it, I have no experience to back up opinions. I also think we should let the aesthetics of our 2 HUGE! redesigns settle slowly into collective unconscience, before trying to overhaul much more. (I may change on this in a few weeks, but not immdiately). Plus the main WP:FA maintainer(raul654) is redesigning WP:FA right now. (but, see below)
  • The Help:Contents (and Help:Help) systems need to be cleaned. That's the big one. I want to leave that for last please! (for when i know the code and content better). I'd be into slowly discussing options somewhere though.
Instead I'm planning on planting aesthetic seeds elsewhere, by cleaning/clarifying up the content of the in-depth help pages, and also through Wikipedia:Colours and related. I want to try to work out why we're using tables everywhere for layout, when the rest of the world is converting to CSS.
We could probably suggest a new colour scheme for the FA/FC/etc to use. I'm planning on expanding the table on the WP:COLOUR talkpage, with a self-consistent palette, that people can pick anything from.
My wrists hurt too much to do many more 14hr wiki-days! --Quiddity 03:38, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Why can't you design a hide/show template that does what you want to, or find someone (look through the page history and talk pages)? Once that's done, we'll move through the policy and then tackle the help system. We'll see where that puts us. HereToHelp 11:51, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Because i have to sleep!  ;-) maybe in 8 hours... --Quiddity (owl)
