VR eSports edit

Virtual Reality eSports are video game competitions in which players compete against each other in a virtual reality world. As 2016 is shaping up to be the year that virtual reality goes mainstream, virtual reality related services begin to emerge. Clearly, VR eSports is one of many.

VR eSports can be viewed as a branch of eSports, which is muck akin to traditional eSports in the way they are organized. What's different is the way participants compete with each other. Players no longer stare at the screen and use the keyboard and mouse to play games, instead, they have to be equipped with VR devices and battle with the opposing team in an immersive gaming world, in which they have to look around for enemies.

History edit

Up until now, there have only been two VR eSports competitions in the world.

WVA 2015 edit

On December 31st 2015, the finals of the world's first VR eSports competition, WVA 2015, took place in Shanghai Everbright Exhibition Center. The competition was organized by Beijing Battletimes company, which invited 100 teams to participate (8 of them are from overseas countries). In WVA 2015, 3 vs 3 teams competed in a VR FPS game and whoever gathered more kills won the competition.[1] [2]

Omni Arena edit

Later on the CES in January 2016, American startup Virtuix hosted another VR eSports competition, Omni Arena, which they claimed to be the first in the world while the first had already been held on the other side of the earth. The participation of Omni Arena, which was closed to chosen contestants, is smaller than WVA 2015. In Omni Arena, players used Omni, an active virtual reality motion platform, to control the moving and direction of their virtual avatars in the game. [3] [4] [5] [6]
