Disambiguation link notification for October 12 edit

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Etal Castle, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Wark Castle and Window seat. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Little Big Inch deletion question edit

I apologize for the trouble. I'm still learning. My posting today on the Big Inch article was intended to add what I thought was an interesting detail. I quoted directly from my article (written with assistance of volunteers) posted on my website. I will further study how to use Wikipedia before posting again. Should I have used my name in the citation to prevent the deletion? I do not want to appear self-serving, but my AOGHS.org website has many interesting and carefully researched articles. Perhaps not up the standards of your excellent work on Medieval castles, but fair. Thank you for your consideration. PetroleumAge (talk) 16:52, 23 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

PetroleumAge, hi! I thought the bit about the balls was interesting as well (although it wasn't clear from the original article if they were actually used during the war or not, or where the original source of the information was, which is important if an article is self-published).
The key issue was the copyright of the original text... Material added to the wiki is released for others to use under a Creative Commons license, which gives very wide rights for its use and reuse. The addition was copied almost word from word from a webpage copyrighted by Bruce A. Wells, and you can't add copyrighted material onto the wiki without the copyright holder's explicit permission (and, if an article was produced with the assistance of other writers, they may have rights as well that need to be factored in, unless they have also given permission for their material to be used).
The trick is usually to paraphrase - rewriting the material in your own words, rather than cut and pasting. How could you add in the key information, ideally referring back to the original sources, without re-using the copyrighted text? Hchc2009 (talk) 17:16, 23 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

your revert edit

Hi, I suppose I appreciate you took the trouble to provide some kind of rationale in the edit summary[1], but I think you were basically saying "I didn't like your change". More to the point, I think you will find that "the removal of the title of the article" doesn't hold much water, as there is no point in putting self explanatory article titles in boldface. I didn't make this up either, it's WP:MOS, more precisely WP:BOLDITIS.

So please whatever else you have to say about "paragraph breaks" and "unreferenced material" (really? in the lead? So, I didn't give a reference that the Norman invasion was in 1066 or something?) please at least revert yourself to the extent of getting rid of "The electrical characteristics of a dynamic loudspeaker are a dynamic loudspeaker driver's electrical characteristics" type of intro. Yes, I mean the sentence "England in the Middle Ages concerns the history of England during the medieval period" you reverted to, do you seriously propose this sounds intelligent or encyclopedic? --dab (𒁳) 20:14, 1 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Dbachmann, before I reply, would you be content if I moved/copied this discussion to the article talk page in question? Hchc2009 (talk) 08:43, 2 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Magna Carta edit

User:Hchc2009/Sandbox3 is looking good, so I've removed the old version from my sandbox. I would suggest moving it into the article (removing the current bullet lists) and letting others see what they think. Do you think a GA nom before long would be suitable? - I'm aware on the delays there & if we want to get it to FA before the anniversary speed may be of the essence.— Rod talk 12:25, 15 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Done. I'll add some general analysis of the content in a bit. I think we're getting near to a GA nom, perhaps another week's work left to do I reckon. Hchc2009 (talk) 13:08, 15 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Great work on this. I have a bit of time over the next couple of days and will look at it again. In particular there are still a few "citation needed" tags I will try to find support for & would be a quick fail at GAC. The size and depth of the article may put off some reviewers so may take a while to get taken up (but I could be wrong & I can think of a few GA reviewers I would be very happy to see volunteer for it). It can't do any harm to approach Lincoln & Salisbury to ask. I would even highlight the particular images which would be most useful (I'm not sure this is particularly useful but maybe this one). They may or may not be aware of CC licencing so may be worth including a link to the licence info (but something more explanatory than Wikipedia:File copyright tags/Free licenses, maybe GNU Free Documentation License or similar).— Rod talk 17:18, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
In the section "Usage of the definite article, spelling "Magna Carta"" we have a citation needed tag - is this for the claim (supported by this entry from OED online) or for the English translation of the latin text (which is not supported by the OED entry)?— Rod talk 19:58, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Also: How do you feel about the "See also" section? Some of them don't even mention Magna Carta. I would be tempted to trim or remove the list.— Rod talk 20:06, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yep, I think some of them are a bit tangential to the topic... Hchc2009 (talk) 20:08, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Trimmed.— Rod talk 20:45, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

In note 3 I changed it to Breay from Breany - hope that is right? Should it be James Holt or John C. Holt?— Rod talk 20:15, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think I may have worked this one out for myself - John C. Holt is given in the bibliography but should be James C. Holt - probably my error.— Rod talk 20:45, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

In "Great Charter of 1216" do we know which Pope Honorius it was? presumably Pope Honorius III but I wanted to check before wikilinking. Also Guala Bicchieri is referred to as "Guala" in the rest of the paragraph - I thought the convention was to use the surname - but maybe there is something different about cardinals?— Rod talk 20:45, 19 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yep, was Honorius IIII. Guala seems to be consistently referred to by his first name in the histories, but I'm not sure if this is a cardinal issue (as princes of the church, is there a separate convention?), a specific 1215 thing, or whether there were several Bicchieris at the time... Hchc2009 (talk) 08:38, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Now I'm more confused Honorius IV wasn't until 1285 to 1287 so did you mean Honorius III?— Rod talk 09:08, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I overtyped the "I"s! Should have been III. :) Hchc2009 (talk) 11:34, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

In the 13th C background section would it be worth a wikilink to the Anglo-French war of 1202–14?— Rod talk 09:26, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

In the lead we have more paragraphs than recomended. The influence on America is mentioned in the first part of para 3 and again in the 5th para - how would you feel about me combining these and merging the rest of para 5 onto the end of para 4?— Rod talk 09:56, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think the lead needs some serious work, as it doesn't really hang together or tell a coherent story... I'd be happy for either of us to do some of the serious restructuring of it! Hchc2009 (talk) 10:02, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm currently through the rest of the article with minor tweaks, so if you wanted to tackle the lead that would be great.— Rod talk 10:15, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Will do. Hchc2009 (talk) 10:45, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Looking good - are you happy for me to edit links etc in your sandbox?— Rod talk 12:51, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
yep, no problem. Hchc2009 (talk) 13:11, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
working (5 mins). I wouldn't have used the word "shewn".— Rod talk 13:17, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm done - would suggest copying it into the article & Thanks.— Rod talk 13:24, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

In "Great Charter of 1225" I am unclear about William Brewer (who argued with Archbishop Langton). Was this William Brewer (justice) or his nephew William Briwere?— Rod talk 10:57, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

In Great Charter 1297: Statute there is a quote "Constitutionally, the Magna Carta of Edward I is the most important" without any attribution or explanation as to why this might be the case.— Rod talk 11:09, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

In 14th-15th centuries I didn't quite understand "The judgement of 1387 confirmed the supremacy..." is this a specific judgement and if so which one? or should this be a more general "A judgement..."?— Rod talk 11:31, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I've put a clarify tag on the Glorious Revolution paragraph for the sentences about the Triennial Acts and Septennial Act 1716 as I'm having working out the significance of these or even just understanding the prose. I think that is enough questions for now & I shall go and do something else.— Rod talk 16:20, 20 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:

Margaret Hughes & Spencer edit

I realise this is a long shot and going back a long way, but thought I'd ask just in case. The article Margaret Hughes has a number of references to various pages of 'Spencer' but the full reference is not given. According to the page history, you introduced these references in January, 2010. It looks likely to me that this is Charles Spencer, Prince Rupert: The Last Cavalier, Phoenix, 2008.
