License tagging for Image:Knox Martin Venus Mural.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Knox Martin Venus Mural.JPG. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 22:09, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Copyright edit

Unfortunately, public art, although you can photograph it, you can't copyright the photograph unless the art it is incidental to the work itself. You can see an example of this with Image:DamienHirstVirginMother.JPG - the copyright belongs to the artist, although I photographed the work. The image itself belongs to me (like any tourist) but the copyright of the art work shown belongs to Damien Hirst. --David Shankbone 17:08, 20 September 2007 (UTC) Thank you for your reply! :-) May I copy your exampleImage:DamienHirstVirginMother.JPG--- thus posting the image and protecting the copyright? Will that fix it? Thankyou thankyou!--Hanska99 17:11, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • The issue is that there needs to be a "fair use" rationale for it to exist. With Virgin Mother, the rationale is that it illustrates Hirst's work on the Damien Hirst page. You would need a similar rationale. --David Shankbone 17:26, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Would it be "fair use" rationale that it illustrates Knox Martin's work on the Knox Martin page? Sorry to keep bothering you, you are very kind to answer.--Hanska99 17:35, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that would be a fair use rationale. If you go back to the Virgin Mother work and hit the "edit" button next to the Licensing column, and cut and paste that into your photo's licensing section, and change the relevant information (Hirst to Martin, etc.) then you can remove the deletion tag. --David Shankbone 17:50, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
You also need to move the image off the Commons and upload it to Wikipedia instead. The Commons doesn't allow fair use work. --David Shankbone 17:53, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello again! I uploaded the image to wikipedia with correct info, but how do I delete it from Commons? --Hanska99 22:15, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
