Combining identical references and use of citation templates edit

Hi, Hannegan: I just wanted to explain my edits to Mount Baker:

  • The Wikipedia style is to combine multiple ibid references into one. That's why I made a Scott03 reference, and used it in multiple places in the article
  • The template {{cite journal}} automatically follows the Wikipedia manual of style for citations, that's why I use it.

I noticed that you reverted some of my ref cleanup edits. I'll put them back. If you want to discuss, please respond at Talk:Mount Baker. Thanks! —hike395 (talk) 17:57, 31 March 2009 (UTC) / Hi, Hannegan. Could you please stop reverting my reference cleanup? I'm trying to make the Mount Baker article obey the manual of style by combining multiple references. Please see WP:REFNAME for our guidelines. Please edit Talk:Mount Baker to discuss further. Thanks! —hike395 (talk) 18:23, 31 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mount Tehama naming and content edit

Naming of articles can be a bit tricky: you can see the guidelines at WP:NAME. In general, we should use the most common name for something. Looking at the USGS fact sheet Volcano Hazards of the Lassen Peak Area, the ancestral volcano (before Lassen Peak) was either "Mount Tehama" or "Brokeoff Volcano". It's not clear to me which is more common. The article is pretty short: it's not clear whether it is really about the original volcano or about the particular remnant (Brokeoff Mountain). If you add more material, then perhaps the subject of the article will become clearer, in which case you can choose between "Brokeoff Mountain", "Brokeoff Volcano", or "Mount Tehama"

In any event, one of Wikipedia's main guidelines is to be bold --- if you see something wrong or incomplete, please fix it: you don't need to ask permission. Other editors will correct any stylistic errors you may introduce, and if you happen to get into a conflict, people generally assume good faith and work things out peacefully. So, I would encourage you to please go ahead and make the article better.

If you're looking for other articles to improve, I can suggest reviewing Cascade Volcanoes and Geology of the Pacific Northwest for problems: we would love to get more expert help. Also, I've been interested in eventually writing Geology of the North Cascades (it's a complex symphony of terranes), but lack the deep background. But, perhaps you wish to stick closer to volcanology, which is fine too.

One other place you may wish to visit is Wikipedia:WikiProject Volcanoes, which is a group of Wikipedians who take care of and improve volcano-related articles. Several editors there seem knowledgeable about volcanoes (e.g., User:Vsmith), but I'm not sure if any are professional volcanologists: I'm sure your help would be welcome!

Thanks again for coming to Wikipedia to donate your expertise to the world. We really appreciate it! Looking forward to working with you more! —hike395 (talk) 04:39, 2 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
