Speedy deletion nomination of Munzee edit

Hello Hanky27,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Munzee for deletion, because it seems to be an promotion, rather than an encyclopedia article.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks,  Blanchardb -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 17:06, 26 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Munzee article in your sandbox edit

Hi, Hanky27. Welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for your note on my talk page. I took a quick look at the article in your Sandbox, and at some of your references. I believe this article CAN be put into shape to be accepted here at en-Wikipedia. However, it does need work. I believe you have already made some improvements, based on Peridon's suggestions.

The main thing you need is references that will qualify as significant coverage in independent reliable sources. You already have identified some links that would qualify, but you have put them in a section called "weblinks". You need to use them as inline, cited references.

The references you now have, via footnotes in the text, do not qualify as independent reliable sources. You have eight "references" but none of them are acceptable. They are not independent; they link directly to Munzee itself. So what you need to do, is to replace those references with some of your "weblinks". I think the links to Telegram, GPS Tracklog, and MDR are good, independent, significant references. You should use them and possibly others as inline citations in the article, to verify the information you present, and to demonstrate that the game has received coverage to make it notable.

A good way to cite references is to use a tool that is here in en-Wikipedia, called "cite". It is in that line of boxes right above the editing window. If you click it, it gives you a form to fill out, using "web" or "news" as appropriate. Paste the following information into that form: the url, the title of the link, and the source of the link (the name of the newspaper, or the publisher of the webpage ("work" or "publisher"). You may also put in the author of the material and the date published. After filling in the form, place your cursor in the text where you want it cited, and click "add citation". That's important! If you don't add it into the text, it will be lost. Here's an example of how it could look:

The QR codes on the Munzees are read by means of a special smartphone app.[1]

You should delete all non-reliable "weblinks" such as facebook, twitter, forums and blogs. They do not add anything to your article and in fact they detract from it.

See what you can do with references, and let me know when you need more help. Leave a note for me here on your talk page; I will put it on my watchlist to be sure to see it. --MelanieN (talk) 18:43, 27 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

P.S. Sorry about the note on your sandbox talk page. I meant to put it here. --MelanieN (talk) 18:46, 27 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

References edit

  1. ^ Faulkner, Adrian (August 8, 2012). "Munzee – A scavenger hunt for your smartphone". GPS Tracklog. Retrieved 27 December 2012.

Ok, got it. However, IMHO this does not make much sense. Most of the independent 3rd party sources describe the Munzee game in its completeness. So I could cite each of the 3rd party sources on every single topic I am describing in the WP article.

Anyway, I'll try my best to find the most senseful citations. I also will delete the references to Facebook, Twitter, etc.

You actually can use the same reference multiple times in the article. Just give the reference a name, like this: <ref name = "whatever name you choose"> at the beginning of the citation. Then you can cite it in other places in the article just by putting <ref name = "whatever name you choose" /> . The name you choose could be the author's last name (for example <ref name = "Faulkner">, or the name of the source (<ref name = "MDR">. To see how it comes out, take a look at Shirley Weber; see how reference #2 is cited in four places? --MelanieN (talk) 19:47, 27 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
You did an excellent job of adding references, and I don't agree with the reviewer that the article fails to establish notability. Let me think about what to do next. --MelanieN (talk) 18:03, 28 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
I just did some rewriting on your article. I put information about notability in the first paragraph, and added more history. I also reorganized your sections to make the article flow better. Then I put a note on the reviewer's talk page asking her to take another look. --MelanieN (talk) 18:45, 28 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Illustration edit

I agree with you that there should be a Munzee illustration at the Munzee article, and I have said so on the talk page. Now let's see what Sudo's Ghost has to say. And a comment to you: when you restored the image you should not have tagged the edit as "minor". That only applies to things like spelling or grammar changes. Things that are substantive or controversial should never be tagged as "minor". One other piece of advice: if it gets removed again, you should not restore it. Leave that for someone else to do. You should not get into an edit war; see the Three Revert Rule. Happy new year! or should I say Glückliches Neues Jahr? --MelanieN (talk) 18:46, 5 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Now who is going to put the Munzee illustration back to the Munzee article? Will you do that MelanieN? Hanky27 (talk) 16:14, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Since no one has objected, I went ahead and added it. --MelanieN (talk) 18:07, 14 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
