Categories and alphabetical sorting edit

Hi there. Welcome to Wikipedia. I saw your comment on the Talk page for David Griffiths (portrait painter) about not knowing how to get him to show up in the right place in the categories. The trick is to use a pipe symbol straight after the name. I have done this, so you can see what I mean by looking at the source again. I have also made a number of other changes. I think they're all mentioned in the edit summary. One thing I have left untouched for now but which other editors may not is the note "Regarded as one of the U.K's foremost portrait painters". You really need to say who regards him as that: currently it's his website, which may not be entirely unbiassed. I'll try to find something in the National Library stuff.

Incidentally, the way to sign your comments is to type four ~ marks in a row: when I type ~~~~ without escaping it with the appropriate tag, I shall sign off as.... Telsa 18:18, 4 December 2005 (UTC) :)Reply

Image:David_Griffiths_self_portrait.jpg listed for deletion edit

Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as Image:David_Griffiths_self_portrait.jpg has been listed for speedy deletion because you selected a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, a non-profit website, this is in fact not the case. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. – riana_dzasta 09:27, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
You will probably need http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS from the painter and the photographer. Mr. Griffiths may be interested in my fledgling project that is mainly meant for sculptors. Painters are invited as well. Hope this helps.--Canoe1967 (talk) 00:20, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Dear Canoe,

I have been trying to add a relevant image to a Wikipedia page and it keeps getting marked for deletion. I have uploaded it several times now in different ways and you appear to be the last person to mark it for quick deletion. I have now marked as 'public domain' in commons and it appears elsewhere on the artist's website. I cannot understand why you said that it should be deleted. I have tried before to clear this up and had an email exchange with permissions-commons Ticket#2013031910008909. I don't know whether this is the issue but the text follows. It has been very difficult to do what should be a simple thing and I do not know where to go next to get this on Wikipedia. Are you able to help me?

Regards,

Howard.

Please respond to this email, providing a link to the image at the location you have uploaded it to at Wikimedia Commons.

If the image has been deleted, while logged-in click on the "contributions" link in the upper right hand corner of any on Wikimedia Commons page, then the "Logs" link under the toolbox on the left side of the page to view your upload log. Find the filename that you uploaded the image under and click on it and give us the link to the resulting page.

If you have not yet uploaded the image, please follow these steps:

1. Login (or create a username if you don't have one) at <https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin> 2. Click on "upload file" in the sidebar (<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload>) 3. Select the file from your computer that you want to upload 4. Enter a descriptive name for the image 5. Select the appropriate license for the file

You might also find our Wikipedia editing instructions (<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing>) and tutorial on using images (<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial>) helpful.

Yours sincerely, Stephen Philbrick

I wasn't the one that tagged it for deletion. I left a note under the green deletion box that riana_dzasta posted. I will pop over to OTRS at commons and see what is going on with the ticket for File:Osian Ellis.jpg. They probably just need the file name to add the license. They will probably need an email from Mr. Griffiths for File:David Griffiths self portrait.jpg as well. One image is on commons and the other is here at the English Wikipedia. I don't know if the same OTRS volunteer can deal with both.--Canoe1967 (talk) 16:37, 9 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Canoe. Any help you can provide will be most appreciated. HCNicholls (talk) 11:32, 10 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Both images are at commons now. See: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard#Match_file_to_ticket Does the other ticket number cover the other image?--Canoe1967 (talk) 02:33, 13 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

David Griffiths does want both images in commons and hopes that the same ticket can be used. HCNicholls (talk) 10:34, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

File:David Griffiths PD.jpg still doesn't have a ticket number. He may have to send an email and let them know the file name so they can find it easier.--Canoe1967 (talk) 16:31, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
