Commonwealth Games edit

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I've rephrased it accordingly. It frustrates me a little when people make good sentences illogical for a reason that they don't explain! I don't really see why edit summaries aren't compulsory as there are very few cases when they aren't helpful to other editors. Ho hum... Catalonia-geo-stub edit

Just saw the edit summary on that one. Is everything ok? Doc Quintana (talk) 22:27, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Consensus was reached on not listing "Spain" as part of the descriptor on this stub template. Regions don't normally have their country listed as well - we keep the number of blue links in a stub template to a bare minimum. In this particular case, too, adding Spain has simply led to edit warring in the past with Catalan separatists. One editor has, however, decided to ignore that on a couple of occasions, despite the comments which I left on his talk page last time he did this. It may well be worth fully protecting the template, or at the very least adding it to the "confirm edits" project (not sure that can be done with templates, though). Dunedin architect edit

Hello James, I see that you take an interest in things Dunedin (as that's where home is) and architecture (e.g. Robert Lawson). I'd like to draw your attention to the new page on Nathaniel Young Armstrong Wales. Maybe you'd like to contribute. I've put a few things on the article's talk page. The page could also do with a better name, but I don't know enough about him to determine what would be most appropriate. Schwede66 02:32, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I see you've made Hamilton West into a disambiguation page. Per WP:FIXDABLINKS, could you clean up the links that now point to the disambig? Thanks, --JaGatalk 10:03, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sigh - looks like the bot request is taking longer than normal. I cleaned up the 80-odd non-Canadian ones; i thought using a bot for the remaining 120 made sense. Grutness...wha? 11:03, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hey, if you have a dab with a bunch of incoming links, all of which need to be re-pointed to a single article, let me know. I can fix it with Wikipedia Cleaner quickly. --JaGatalk 12:09, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, looks like it's been fixed semi-automatically so I've withdrawn the BRFA :(. Soccer articles edit

Hi James,

After tagging a couple of the National soccer league articles for being unreferenced, I thought it best to leave a friendly note onthe author's talk page. Quite a surprise that it turned out to be you! dramatic (talk) 18:34, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

They're referenced. The reference tag is under the table. I'll add more if you like, though. Grutness...wha? 23:50, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Done. You're right, the text couldv'e doine with more reference info. Grutness...wha? 00:15, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Re spelling - you're welcome. I didn't look at the earlier articles so closely, and I've mainly relied on my browser's inline spelling checker, so it may have missed some "wrong word" errors (I did catch a thee for the). We have a six month old kitten too, and I'm not sure whether its sojourns across the keyboard or sudden insertion of claws into my leg are responsible for more errors on my part. Feel free to self-assess as start/low on any remaining articles. dramatic (talk) 06:01, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Municipalities of Chihuahua templates edit

I've discovered an interesting duplication. The Template:Chihuahua current only shows the municipalities and their seats, in a rather difficult to read manner, but having correct links. A new template, Template:Municipalities of Chihuahua by new user Ricraider, has a more readable format and a nice locator map; however, it is huge and nearly all of the links are red because it looks as though he mostly copied Anexo:Municipios de Chihuahua from the Spanish Wikipedia. It is true that the article Municipalities of Chihuahua has the map and a full list. The new templaet is only used in the Administrative divisions section of the Chihuahua article. What would you recommend? What should be in a state/province template? How much detail? Some like Template:West Azarbaijan Province don't look bad at all (from a formatting perspective). --Bejnar (talk) 22:06, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Source? edit

Hi. You've been making my watchlist work overtime the last few days! ...but that's cool, all I need is a Hide Grutness edits button next to the Hide my edits one ;-) I'm guessing you have a book on the Chatham Cup or something which is producing all these middle initials (and the odd name correction)? I'd guess too that same such gives info like this? If so, it would be pretty neat if you could tack a reference on the end of some of these things; a few of these local heroes are single sourced currently, and another source would a) be further verification and b) potentially give other editors other stating points for improving them further.--ClubOranjeT 11:56, 21 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

NZ Geographic magazine as a quality source edit

Hi Grutness. At the moment Huia is going thru its nomination process as a featured article at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Huia/archive1. One of the reviewers has queried NZ Geographic (or an article in it by Szabo) as a quality source. I think it's okay to use - perhaps with some qualifications like not using it to back up something too far out of the ordinary. Any thoughts? I am getting a bit worried about the FA since I am only a minor contributor to the article and the nominator seems unable to contribute much at the moment to the discussions. If he doesn't show soon I might have to suspend the FA Kahuroa (talk) 04:49, 15 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, and will do. The template's designed to be removed after creation, as it converts nicely. I think a solution would be to prevent the bot from moving pages over redirects, but I"m not sure how hard that would be to implement. A cartographical request edit

Dear James,

I trust that you are in good stead to carry out a request that will pose no difficulty to your most singular talents. If you could be so kind as to emulate the cartographical excellent in your work on the Otago railway trail map, now used for those newfangled bicycles, for a little article of my own. Question regarding stubs edit

Hi Grutness! I just stumbled across Category:Orissa geography stubs and wanted to ask for your opinion before I nominated its subcats for upmerging. None of the 30 subcats are anywhere near 60 articles, and from the appearance of both the Orissa cat and the main India geography stubs cat, none of them have a snowball's chance of making it to 60 anytime soon. Upmerging all of the cats to the Orissa geo cat would make that cat have around 210 articles in it - is this too many? Or do you have something you would recommend doing other than upmerging? Thanks! Four Main Centres edit

Hi Grutness

I totally agree that Dunedin is part of the 'four main centres' in a historical context, for its huge historical and cultural importance in New Zealand. However, I think the term 'four main centres' is a little bit antiquated. In most cases, I've seen the term 'main centres' used because we don't have four clear standout main centres anymore. Hamilton and Tauranga both have larger population size than Dunedin, and are significant cities within the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region, as Dunedin is to the Otago Region and the lower south island in general.

Most of the links refer to Dunedin's historical status as one of the main centres. The Te Awa link refers to the four main centres of 1900, Matthew Bannister's essay refers to the four main centres in the early 1980s, police link refers to a police program in the 1950s etc. None of the articles refer to Dunedin in a modern context as one of 'four main centres'.

Typically, I usually try and question these statements, being a Hamiltonian :) Maybe there is some different wording available, or at least other links that refer to Dunedin as one of four modern New Zealand centres. Considering Hamilton zone has roughly 55,000 more people than Dunedin, it's harder to justify Hamilton not being a main centre nowadays..

Cheers --Nzwj (talk) 05:34, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Actually, a couple of them do. The one indicating 2003's weather in the four main centres is pretty up to date. If you want more references that give national organisations, government departments and the like which refer to the four main centres in a modern context they're pretty easy to find: here are some - [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]...
A lot of organisations simply refer to the four main centres without defining which four they are (assuming that everyone knows it means Ak, Wl, Ch & Dn). I can understand a Hamiltonian's reluctance to admit it (probably the same would be true for someone from Tauranga), but the historical and geographical reasons are still important ones, even if Dunedin's not as big as the other two centres. Mind you, Hamilton's likely to soon be a southern suburb of Auckland anyway, now that they think they're city's so super... :/ Grutness...wha? 09:57, 13 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
